Better buy a UMPC. Cheaper and larger monitor

Yep Ultra Mobile PC. i.e. Asus EEE, Aspire One, etc. They all cost less than 25K.

A cowon or creative would be a good alternative to it too.

I saw a multi-media player in Megamall, it cost 5k and the brand was unfamiliar to me... any thoughts on this? I\'d like to get an Epson, but it\'s too expensive...

i agree also, but there is a sacrifice though..

first the storage. the most available now is 80GB for MSI wind.. there are "ways" to increase storage; but with some, it voids the warranty.

also the screens, albeit larger, colors are sacrificed. You wouldn't get the 94% adobe rgb gamut, as with my experience with the aspire one. Gradients show considerable color banding. (not sure with others)

But it is really a delight to see the images on a larger screen. If you know your way around stuff you can just bring your netbook/UMPC and just shoot tethered.

but the former con can be easily amended with external storage.

The problem with such a beautiful screen is that you're setup for disappointment once you've printed them.

another concern using a UMPC as a replacement for the epson P-series is that its too much of a hassle to download your images if you're on the go. imagine shooting a festival like dinagyang...you have to open, wait for it to boot, etc.....:(

the P-series gives that convenience. just my thoughts.

The problem with Cowon is that it does not support RAW files. SO if you shoot RAW/NEF etc and transfer your images to the Cowon, you won;t be able to view it.

The EPSON MMViewer is designed with the photographer in mind first. Playing music and video are not top of the list features - like how it was described in the OP, no videos, music mentionod - rather that it is 35% faster at downloading images (from CF) and that it can display 94% of the Adobe RGB gamut.

It all depends on the way one shoots. If you're the type who uploads while shooting, then the Epson portable multimedia viewer is really the best solution esp. with the built-in CF and SD card reader. But on the other hand, if you have enough CF cards for your shoot that you only upload at the end of the day then the UMPC becomes an option. JMHO! :)

I'd upgrade but with the way I shoot, I have yet to max out the 80GB on my P5000. One week's worth of shoot sees my requirements at around 20-30GB.

What I really need are replacement batteries for the P5000.

^^ Last I heard they were 2500 each Raul, and you'ld have to make a special order for them. Try Villman.

What's the smallest storage amount of the Epson? I don't think I'll need anything more than 20GB at any given trip...

David, i have the old epson p2000 and it has 40gb in its belly. Not quite sure if this is the smallest in the epson line-up. Its pretty slow in today's standards... but this baby has not failed me in my trips (crossed-fingers). :)

Levi: Speed isn't really a factor for me, not a pro (no client pressure) anyway... I'll scout for an old stock for that model, thanks :)

(Side note: seems a lot cheaper to just buy more rolls of film haha)

If you can still find stock of Epson P-3000, that has 40GB. :) It's been discontinued in the US for quite some time already.

The faster download is still an advantage even if you're not in a hurry since it will prolong the use of your battery as well. :)

Ah... not bad for a brand new unit esp. if you don't need the extra features. Last I heard, there is pa in HK. :)

Hi Guys,

Any other cheap alternatives for this one?

David Tong
01-13-2010, 04:50 PM
there are units that CANNOT view the photos but act as a data dump device that are much cheaper (basically a built-in card reader with a HDD and power supply).

randytamayo

A cheaper alternative for me would be a netbook and a reliable USB card reader.

I have the old P3000 but when I got it, there were no netbooks then...
