View Full Version : DPP Next Issue: What theme you want?

Pages : [1] 2

jersonPAICAN

Of course the DPP staff has the ultimate power to choose what theme would be up for the next issue.

But we just want to hear from our community what theme they hope the DPP would cover in the next issue.

And by sensing the "pulse" the staff will have the idea what will be the hot or not. It's almost undeniable that DPP's sales performance depends on the topic it carries.

How about you? what topic you are you interested in most?

jersonPAICAN
08-03-2008, 06:37 PM
I'll start...

I think.... SUNSET and SUNRISE theme (or anything associated with it) would make a big hit in the market and mag stands.

It's quite overused subject/theme of photography, but I don't know why we humans are addicted to it.

how about an issue dedicated to printing (from calibrating, then profiling, also for inkjet, or dyesub, large format, print media, etc..) or is it too limited of a topic deserving of a whole issue?

How about something different? Like use themes that are not as common as photojournalism (instead something specific like: a day in the life of?) something not as common as landscapes (but specific like underwaterscapes???) something not as common as portraiture (but specific like nude self portraiture) we really have to start thinking outside the box and not confine ourselves to shooting women in bikinis, street parades, and sunsets.

it would be cool if the magazine could have multiple themes (like jpgmag) so we get more variety?

im thinking:
Street Fashion
Self Portraiture
Documentary (readers gallery with stories)
Events Photography (Dtan people!)
In Transit (a popular thread here)
What's cooking? (food photography with recipes?)

thats at the top of my mind. my .02

Here are a few thoughts:

1) "Back to Basics" - tips from various professionals; A sort of FAQ edition. While many won't admit it very often its the basic stuff we tend to forget, especially with all the upgrades in technology. It will also be a good editions for many beginners out there looking for quick help. Part of the issue can be focused on various camera clubs and their activities as well as workshops in the area.

If there would be any feature I would wanna read, its a technical (and sample photo) comparo of the different lenses for different systems.
for example - the 50mm's (Canon vs Nikkor vs CM-Sigma vs NM-Sigma vs CM-Tamron vs NM-Tamron vs Pentax vs Oly vs Sony vs CZeiss vs etc.. . . . . ) plus the people who actually uses and swears by them.

Tapos, para objective yung shoot compara, everyone would take the same photo, same settings. For Canon and Nikon, if there would be volunteer bodies to cover the whole lineup (eg. 450D-40D--5D-1DMKIII) just to sample the same lens and see how it would behave in different bodies.

As the mythbusters say it -- If its worth doing, its worth OVERDOING!

How about featuring one Philippine province every month? That obviously would include shots of:

interesting places in the featured province- landscape photography
products from their place- product photography
festivals, rituals- event photography
locals- street photography
and many more.

DPP could tap forum members from each province to collaborate and send the best pictures they can provide (maybe to promote tourism= advertising for them)

That way, they could meet and have a shoot together, and in the long run, they might make more photography clubs= group orders/subscription of DPP mag. (because DPP mag is hard to get hold of in the provinces)

imho, probably some techniques on casual photography, family pictures, making use of available light in the house, etc. would be good topics.

i'd have to agree. i went to a christening last week and my little nephews seem to be almost impossible to capture. hahaha! and then there my niece, the little baby who was christened, and it was hard to get a good shot of her because she was crying...

so if any of the gurus can share stuff about photographing children, or just making family photos more than just the usual, run of the mill snapshots... that would be awesome.

Not a 'cover' topic but it should be good for an inside article. Maybe an interview of a Phil. lawmaker/government official who has something to do with the issue.

Photography and the Law. this is important, especially for us newbies, in order to avoid mall security and other hassles about taking shots. :)

How about mastering HDR?

i think this was covered too...

how about macro shots? like those super macros..
or shooting the sun... what equips, filters, etc..
or panning.. super sharp subjects, blurred backgrounds
or shooting waterfalls and other water-related images, (to prevent over exposure as it reflects light)
or IR photography?

anyway, can the next issue have something for us film peeps? well, something like film street photography... like the ones by Mr. Henri Cartier-Bresson type of street shoot? or just something for the film enthusiasts.. like a two page film photography basics?

and also, photography and law is good.. but i think it would be just a one to two page discussion.. it would be one of the main topics of the magazine.. it would be very helpful for us, for us to know our stand, and what our rights are just in case we are confronted and asked to surrender our beloved cameras..

I just remembered my last request in this thread.. an issue dedicated to printing. This has been answered actually I think (being that it doesn't merit a whole issue). How I wish that DPP would make a supplement issue (?) kinda like how Summit does with some of their publications. Think DPP in a Wedding Belle shell dedicated just for printing. It even presents a valuable ad space for printer manufacturers or print labs, or album suppliers, or anything with prints concerned. I mean some hobbyists still have to experience the fulfillment of taking photographs through the tactility of a print. maybe it's just me? I dunno..

Hey Nino... Howabout food or product photography on the cover of the DPP? Also have a whole issue dedicated to food and/or product photography... This might be something different considering we always have a person (either nude, fully clothed or portraits, even in photojourn issue) or place (travel, landscape, etc.), but never had a food shot as cover...

Or a Bird issue (the flying kind)? If I'm not mistaken there has been a wildlife issue (2nd ish i think??? - correct me if I'm wrong), but not dedicated specifically to birds... :)

The issue can include tips for directing cosplayers, choosing locations for photoshoots, shooting in conventions (like how to shoot the cosplay catwalk). ...for you Michael... you may want to inquire from any members here they might have one extra copy. (Issue #12)

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z63/DPP_Gallery/12.jpg

Will you able to post that in Australia, because I emailed DPP heaps of times if I could subscribe and if they could mail here, but they didn't reply to me.

Architecture pls! Interiors and Exteriors. hehehe. :D

These subclass of photography are very easy. All you need to do is to capture HDR images and use the global compression in photomatix.

feature the various photography clubs and groups active on the DPP website.. hehe...don't forget ours! =)

i just want to echo on what my fellow "groupmate" suggested. For this will encourage more groups to be active in activities, and by doing that improving basic skills and further improve our knowledge in photography.

and if ever granted.. pls include the "nocturnals" :):)

Completely disagree.
There is a whole discipline in shooting architectural shots.

Even from the film days, this has been on of the more difficult fields of photography.

HDR is only enjoyed by tacky archi firms. ;)

Feature local festivals for the months of 2010, this way we can plan our leaves and schedule flights in advance if ever we are going to shoot :)

Its my pleasure to introduce DPP #26 that is dedicated primarily to event photography and most especially shooting concerts and weddings. This magazine is at the printers and should be on the stands next week roughly on Fri/June 12. The energy of a concert often produces the most dramatic and striking imagery and Issue 26 will show you how to take these shots.

If you are into weddings, we go beyond the basic How To's of wedding photography but instead focus on how to make the bride look beautiful, which is the most important part of any wedding album. As usual the rest of the magazine is packed with information so pick up a copy when this issue hits the stands next week. I am proud to say that DPP ROCKS!

And before I forget, Joel Garcia, thanks for the wonderful cover image. You Da Man!

On a side note: ENCLOSED IN EVERY ISSUE 26 IS A PASS FOR OUR ANNIVERSARY EVENT ON JUNE 27. YOU CANNOT ATTEND OUR EVENT WITHOUT THIS PASS. AND REMEMBER, ITS ONE PASS PER PERSON.

And one more suggestion, I'm not sure if you included a buying guide for equipments in previous issues. It would be great if you could include it. It seems to be a dilemma for newbies like me when it comes to buying equipments like tripod or filters. An insight from seniors would be a great help. Like for example, best lens for landscape/portrait; or maybe some advise when buying accessories. I think this may help newstarters anticipate what they're gonna buy in the future. Whether they want to pursue landscape photography or portrait, etc.

Thanks :)
