View Full Version : ef 70-300 is usm recall in the philippines
Hi ,
this is my first time here.
I have that lens , but it belongs to the early production unit that was recalled in other countries due to portrait problem at 300mm, Mine does soften very little at that mode , but only remotely noticeable at 100%. almost neglegeable.
My question is , Has anybody here experienced returning it to Canon for servicing for the supposed problem? How did it turned out?
Thank you for your time.

gianlee 10-15-2006, 11:24 PM Hi mars!
I have that lens also, bought it in HK. I had it checkd sa canon. Buti na lang they gave me a new unit, kase kasama yun lens ko sa recall. I showed them my reciept, just to prove that I bought it in HK. No problems naman medyo matagal lang ang process halos 1 month.
thanks
Tammy_David 10-16-2006, 12:19 AM Crap I have the same lens.
Do you have the link of the announcement on the recall?
Canon had a recall with some models from the powershot series. A friend of mine got a brand new ixus as a replacement from his old A600 while my Tita's A300 was repaired free of charge with no proof of purchase. I will be expecting the same service from the folks in Marvin Plaza if ever...
I dont know yet , how to post a link, but I will learn as soon as I have the time.
The announcement could be found at Canon USA and Canon south east asia site, but it is burried deep now, so you really have to look for it.
The affected units have 0 or 1 on the 3rd digit of the serial number, that could be found near the lens mount at the bottom.
I;m not sure though if it really loss res, at portrait mode at 300mm, cause my hand are more shaky at that mode than in landscape mode.
I'm more concerned about the long term behavior of that lens, and also the reliability of Canon to service it , cause I live in cagayan de oro city, I will have to send it by fedex or LBC.

I tried but still dont know how to put a link, but if you go to canon asia and click support and downloads , digital camera and then place the cursor on the notices button on the right side, a link will pop out to the 70-300 recall.
tet bautista 10-16-2006, 06:18 PM i'm happy with my 70-300mm lens though it's quite heavy.
ANGELO SANTOS 10-18-2006, 11:19 PM look here:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&keycode=2112&fcategoryid=216&modelid=11922
it's the 'vertical orientation images in tele side' problem.
i have one myself. didn't notice it. mostly taking shots at 300mm during two days of shooting graduations. it's since been stored in the drybox. hmm. gotta check mine too. waahhh!
When I put my ear near the lens and rotate it from horizontal to vertical position, I could hear something na parang nahuhulog sa loob, that must be the cause for its problem.
BTW, I live in Cagayan de oro city, And its not very easy for me to just send it to Canon without being their myself, If only I know how to dissasemble the lens and fix the loose part inside , I will do it. Is someone here a Canon technician who could give me an advice on how to do it? and what the pitfalls are?
mayk_cruz 10-20-2006, 04:06 AM Canon @MavinPlaza(makati city) were very accomodating to my ("similar") situation(they repaired/replaced the CCD of my Powershot) regarding recalled units. they did the service free-of-charge without any question. my unit was bought from the US via amazon.com and they still afforded me the service...
So if you have the affected unit, simply visit their service center
Darryl Ong 10-20-2006, 06:35 AM like this lens too,,, buti na lang di kasama ung sa recall ung sakin
I e-mailed Canon about this, I recieved a reply today , they said they're gonna replace it , :-) What a relief.
It'll take about 2 weeks for me to recieve the replacement, They said, I hope this is true .
If the replacement is good and the turn around is not very long, Then, next year , I will buy an L lens, Knowing that Canon Phil.'s service is reliable. But still, I"m crossing my finger on this.
I have a 350d, Should I get the 17-40L or the more expensive 24-105 IS USM? What do you think? :-)

versatility-wise, go w/ the 24-105 na lang. performance-wise (and the super wide angle), buy the 17-40. easy, eh? :)

Alan Fontanilla 11-25-2006, 11:55 PM Guys - I'm actually very impressed with Canon .. and how they treat photographers. While I have not encountered the problems that you had .. but my last nice experience from them was when I enquired about the EF Lenswork book that they have ... they called me after a week to tell me to pick my copy up.
