hi, i would like to ask if i will be shooting products and portraiture, what will be the lenses that would be suitable for this? I currently have a 20D and a EF 28-135 lens. do you think this would be enough? what kind of lens should i add? hoping you could share your thoughts with me.

Thank you.

For products I would recommend a REAL macro lens. Not a zoom with macro feature.

Since you're a canon user, your choices for that would be the ff:

EF 100mm 2.8 macro (1:1)
EF 50mm 2.5 compact macro (1:2)
EF-S 60mm 2.8 macro (1:1) (only for APS-C-sized sensors)

60mm/2.8 Micro-Nikkor
105mm/2.8 Micro-Nikkor
or 105mm/2.8 Micro-Nikkor VR

@Cesar: Thanks for asking the question. I was thinking about that as well. :D

@Dindin: Thank you for giving us Nikon users ideas of lenses to be used.

I really want to get that 105mm/2.8 Micro-Nikkor VR but don't you have to move far away from your subject when taking portraits? Sorry if I'm wrong! :)

mhon,

took "product shot lighting" lesson from Jay Alonzo recently ...
what we were required was a 70-200 mm lens (or something within that range) ...
so your existing lens of 24 - 135 is within the range ...
using a macro with a short (focal) range may force one to come too close to the subject and interfere with the (studio) lights ...

for portraits, i also like using 70 -200 mm ...
the lower range for the face and shoulder shots ...
upper range, to fill the frame with the face (without getting too close to the subject) ...

but for both type of shots, it is recommended that you use lenses that can capture things real sharp (your client might be too meticulous and starts looking even for minute details) ...

and normal lense on my portrait.
