View Full Version : My first bird pic
Romy Ocon 10-14-2006, 10:04 AM Taken at Caliraya in April 2004 (recently reprocessed), this Yellow-vented Bulbul was among the first 50 bird shots that I ever took, and it got me hooked into birding.
300D + Tokina 80-400, 300 mm, f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/1250 sec, hand held, jpeg capture

Romy i would have thought you were doing bird pics longer than that. your first bird pic is very impressive and looks like it was taken by a seasoned nature and wildlife photog.
Romy Ocon 10-14-2006, 10:11 AM Thanks, Carlo.... just started shooting them birds in April 2004, with the purchase of my Tokina 80-400 - built like a tank, cheap, light and as sharp as a Coke bottle at 400 mm (actually, it was not too bad at 80-350 mm even wide open)....:)

Earl Gonzalez 10-14-2006, 10:16 AM Romy, this bird! This Yellow V. Bulbul birdie comes in abundance where I live. :) I believe this is female... The male ones looks black with white feather tips... correct me if I'm wrong here.
I love the Photo BTW! :) mmmmmmm 2004 only... WOW.
Romy Ocon 10-14-2006, 10:26 AM Thanks, Earl... both sexes of this specie look alike. It's a very common bird in our islands, even in urban gardens, and it's omnivorous - it eats fruits, worms, small insects, etc.
It's a good target practice for birdshooting because it can be easily approached and the contrasting plumage needs good exposure judgment...:)

Wow, really Romy? :) Coz I could have sworn I saw this thing do like a mating/flirting dance with something a bit bigger and definitely near black in colour... mmmmmmmm... Cross breeding? :)
Maybe I'll try to catch a pic so that we can accurately ID the birdie...
Reyno Rosete 10-14-2006, 12:11 PM Looks like you'd been at it for a lifetime. That's an excellent first photo. Thanks Romy for inviting us to post our first bird photo on this thread.
I took my first bird photo back in April after I bought my first (D)SLR in Feb. Not counting the many P&S and disposables I've used over the years to take photos of family and friends for posterity, my experience in photopgraphy is less than a year. Take a look at this Little Blue Heron I took with 350D in auto mode + Sigma 70-300.

Earl, I suspect the YVB you saw might be fighting with another common garden bird - the Pied Fantail (Maria Kapra in Tagalog). They're actually of similar size (7-1/2" total length) and the PF is a gregarious, aggressive dude... I've seen it fight with YVBs and it even attempts to chase away cats....:)
Did the black bird look like this?

Romy Ocon 10-14-2006, 12:31 PM Thanks, Reyno.... that's a very nice early pic too! I'm also suprised that you started birding only a few months ago... your recent captures bear the mark of a field ace. Well, I guess dedication (or addiction/obsession  ) to the craft somehow speeds up the learning curve....:)

tj_parpan 10-14-2006, 05:01 PM This was my first birding pic taken in December 2005 at the American War Memorial. This White-collared Kingfisher on a cross really started it for me.

I didn't know much back then and it shows. But Romy's and Reyno's first shots looks like they've been at it for quite some time!
These guys were taken last August at the Coastal Road Lagoon. Better, but I still need more practice!

Romy Ocon 10-14-2006, 06:24 PM The first one looks like it was taken from a good distance, TJ. The second has a lot of detail (the couple looks familiar to me, was this taken at the entrance, before the gate?)...:)

Raul Marcelo 10-14-2006, 06:45 PM mr. romy's superb bird pictures inspired me to try this segment of photography less than a month ago. was about to give up because of the blurred and unsharp images i got, until one nice shot of the YV-BB in our neighbor's tree last monday. i'm still figuring out how to post the pix here.
louie_lao 10-14-2006, 07:13 PM Romy, I can't believe that was your first bird photo. It's so nice!!! :) You're really made to be a bird man! Awesome! :)

Bird shooting is daunting (even bordering at frustrating) at first, Raul.... until you hit that first decent shot, and you're hooked for good. Looking forward to your YVB pic...:)

Marton_Benitez 10-15-2006, 01:02 AM That's your first?! hahaha That's beautiful! :D
Jimmy Rosaria 10-15-2006, 04:42 AM very nice series...
unfortunately my first bird shot was inside the zoo..
mr romy,
singit lng.. since your are a sigma user which is better with APO or DG.. thanks
Teejay Joson 10-15-2006, 06:08 AM first experience talaga ang the best!!!
Romy Ocon 10-15-2006, 06:49 AM Thanks, Mon, Marton, Jimmy and Teejay...:)
Mon, can't see your pic (broken link?).
Jimmy, it depends on which particular Sigma lens you are concerned with. In some Sigma lenses, I can't see a difference in IQ between the older non-DG and the DG versions. In others, it appears there's some improvement.

It's exactly this bird! :D But they didn't seem like fighting... It actually seems like dancing... mmmmmmmmm...
Gil Tuzon 10-15-2006, 07:54 AM Enjoyable thread. My first bird pics actually showed only the profiles; thus, will just post those that were recognizable.
cheers,

Early shot from my first zoomed prosumer (Panasonic FZ10) in Feb. 2004. A red shouldered hawk.

Early DSLR pic (Canon XT + Tamron 28-300mm) in May 2005. A Caspian Tern I think. Early evening shot.

Romy Ocon 10-15-2006, 08:48 AM Thanks, Nick and Gil...:)
Gil, the first one has excellent detail! I always thought that a P&S would bog down under such tough lighting, but you pulled it off nicely.... excellent exposure control!
Here's sharing my first recognizable flier - a Cattle Egret in breeding plumage captured over the ricefields of Valladolid, Negros Occidental in late April 2004. The 300D's AI servo implementation was bad, plus the Tokina 80-400's AF was as slow and noisy as a bulldozer. Hence I've to turn off AF and just use manual focus to attempt catching BIF's.
The success rate was terribly low (I've to stop down a bit for bigger DOF and more allowance for MF error), but oh boy.... when I did get them in focus, I was as happy as a cat that has just swallowed a pet Colasisi...:D
300D + Tokina 80-400, 350 mm, f/13, 1/1000 sec, ISO 400, hand held, jpeg capture

Reyno Rosete 10-15-2006, 10:08 AM Very nice first in-flight captures gentlemen. Mine was a total disaster and it took me several thousand rounds on my Rebel XT before I even got an acceptable capture.
Raul Marcelo 10-15-2006, 11:15 PM really can't figure out how to upload the pix. will have to ask my kids how. will try again tomorrow.

Mon Corpuz 10-16-2006, 12:42 AM Jimmy, Marton, thanks.
The birds are camera shy. They'd prefer to be picture taken atop of a tree. Normally they can be found gracing with cows and carabao on the fields.
Sir Rommy, the link (http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=jtys8f1.45u524x1&x=0&y=-nnzg8c) is working naman on my end.

Mon Corpuz 11-03-2006, 07:49 PM I figured out, this must be my first birding picture. Took this in Pangulasian Island, El Nido, Palawan last March.

Can't see your pics, Ruel...:(

Raul Marcelo 11-04-2006, 06:27 PM romy: this was the shot that made me continue shooting birds after hundreds of blurred/soft images made me think about quitting. not as sharp as i wanted, but this made me really happy.

Raul Marcelo 11-04-2006, 06:44 PM romy: that YVB shot was followed by this http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p108/rmarcelo/birds/CopyofIMG_2120.jpg
but it seems i'm back to square one. i can only find very few keepers (based on my lower standards, of course) from the hundreds of shots i've taken lately. but i'm not giving up. still learning. thanks to your tips, and i always bring my flash now.

Both excellent shots, Raul... great exposure job too. It's quite easy to blow the whites of the YVB and the bill of the Chestnut Munia. Prepare to get hooked! :)
