Hi! I'm a newbie here at DPP forum. I just want to know your opinion regarding my thoughts about my friends using my DSLR. I really love using my D80 so whenever there are occassions be it a birthday, carshows or whatever instance, I bring it with me and shoot pictures. Here's the thing, I have a lot of friends and they all seem to be so anxious about using my camera everytime it's with me. One guy would usually borrow it then the next guy does the same until such time that it gets returned to me wherein I will still have to delete the pictures that they've taken as most are just experimental shots and really a waste of memory and shutter actuation. I don't want to seem selfish but is there a decorum on the use of one's DSLR especially if the owner is really serious about the hobby?Does anyone here experience the same thing? Please share your thoughts. Thanks!

Good, realistic insight... :) Indeed, it's just shutter and costless memory space.

I Love My D80.

that won't last long, believe me :D
with new ones coming out almost every 6~9 months you'll find a new love
well for me, i encourage them to use my cam, the BI effect ika nga, but also i remind them that is a precision equipment & one misalignment could disturb the space continuum :D

In my opinion, it would be better if you'd explain how your d80 works while they try it out... that way, you're hinting how you value your camera, and at the same time encourage them to 'handle it with care.' and yes, memory space and actuations aren't a big thing to get conscious of while you're on this hobby... isn't it more enjoyable with friends and when they appreciate your gear and what you can do with it? loosen up...

Cheers! :)

just want to share.. same thing that happened to back in college... i had no choice but to let them use it... was concerned about what might happen to the camera since it costs more than their tuition fee.. so one time, when they borrowed it again, i changed the settings to make the picture look underexposed.. then while they were using it, they had a very hard time to make properly exposed shot, so they give up and give it back to me.. i'm one selfish guy that time.. just worried about my camera.. then one time, they told me to help them in using it, i told them it'll be hard to learn it if you don't have one, since you need a lot of practice.. then after graduation, some of my friends had a new DSLRs, they request that for their grad gift from their parents.. then, after that we had some sessions and i teach them everything i know... now, they don't need to borrow again... they already have their own..

i have no worries about friends(during gatherings & such) using my cam. as long as the strap is around their neck. the 2 green buttons do help getting things back in order.

I used to be paranoid with the actuations before, but hey as what rjevaristo said, friends are friends, I just let them use it whenever they borrow it, I just remind them to be careful.

Unless your friends are wild hooligans, however, odds are slim that you cam will get damaged by normal usage.

Shutter actuation is overrated.

I'm actually more worried about how the camera is handled by other people, my friends know how much I've put into this hobby so they know how to take care of my camera as well. In gatherings, you'll meet people who would be curious to touch your gear. Some folks do tend to push a button without asking what it does first. (click-click-CRAK! ...bakit ayaw?). My SB600 fell off because some genius thought that the UNLOCK switch was the ON/OFF switch. Good thing it fell onto my face instead of the flooded street when I tried to shoot upwards.

Some usual scenarios include:
- Forcefully trying to bend the speedlight without pushing the PUSH button.
- Trying to rotate the focus ring while in autofocus mode.

Always remind them to put the strap on. Someone even took pictures with my cam over a windly cliff without a strap.

It may just be a ($1000+) camera, but when it's something you're passionate about, it kinda hurts to see when people handle it like a rag doll.

What I do is I bring my p&s camera and let them use that one instead. I'm not really a good photographer, but I'm still learning myself, so it would be a drag if my camera gets messed up and I have not even maximized its potential.

I dont think its being selfish or anything, its more like being protective of something which means something to you.

Nice thread. I also own a D80 and I still use it even if I already bought a D300. Cris I feel ya, I guess your one of those "super bait and approachable friend" and it's gonna be hard on your part to hinder them from using your camera. The other guy here pointed out a good solution though, teach them how to use your camera correctly.

Though it's just a camera, you did work hard to buy it did you? If not, then someone bought it for you (and your lucky).

On the flip-side, I am the "kind but unapproachable suplado friend". Ever since I bought a dslr only 4 people besides me has used it. I also get what David said and I agree with him. But I might try changing my cameras settings if I'm not in the mood (in reaction to what Jan Michael's reply) haha.

When a friend tries to borrow my camera, I make it a point that I myself would slip the neckstrap around his/her neck. No need to worry afterwards hehe. =)

I got no qualms with my photo buddies handling my camera because they know how much they'd pay if something got busted while they were using it. My other non-photo buddies are kinda intimidated by it. Just gripping it and comparing the weight to their P&S's makes them return the cam back into my hands.

@John B. We're the same. :) Only 4 people, other than me, help my camera. Kinda in the suplado side also. if they want to view the pictures, I just press the play button, with my camera on my neck, and they just view it.

@Paolo. I love what you said, "comparing the weight of the point and shoot against your DSLR". Basically, that's what I experience too. Even you don't have that "umph" or that pride, they still get intimidated.

Basically, for Cris, friends are friends. Emphasizing safety(by a joke or something) should be given to them by any other way.

just my 2 cents.

Thanks,
Carlof

you're not alone man, it's kinda irritating when you see that they're only using it just for their on Vanity "camwhoring". but everytime my friends borrow my cam, i always remind them to put the strap around their neck. anyway since then, I bring it to school often. and changing some settings can help. what i did one time is to replace the AF/AE C.Fn of my cam. lol :D
