So fire away....:)

Hi Carlo. I find those really essential for indoors when you can't use a flash. These shots wouldn't be possible without them(at least for me). I also tried using the 70-200mm VR but the photos turned out not that good. :(

hi zandy, are those pics shot wide open at F/1.4? They look really good. How much did you get the 28 1.4?

For me:

Tokina 12-24 f/4

Nikkor 18-70 f/3.5-4.5
Sigma 28-70 f/2.8

Thanks Vince,

Yes, they were shot wide-open and hand-held.
I got the 28 1.4 for $1600 used. But that was earlier this year. Since the lens has been discontinued, it has gone up to about $2k now. :-(
Another option is to go with the Sigma 30mm 1.4, I think it costs around $450.

Sorry, made a mistake. both were shot at f1.4 but with the 85mm(ISO 400 - no flash).

Here is one from the 28mm but shot at f2 (again, ISO 400 - no flash)
That church was actually darker than what appears in the picture.

I'll try to find pics using the 28mm 1.4 shot wide open and post it later.

And if you use a D50, you gain 2 stops since it is very usable at ISO1600

@ Vince

to tell you frankly, I haven't really used it yet...newly arrived (last Saturday). Of course I have mounted it on my cam for the usual testing (kuno), I think the pix are a tad sharper (both at 20m and handheld) than the ones taken with the kit lens. Maybe it is because of the VR, but I think if I use a tripod with the kit lens mounted the difference would be very neglible or none at all.

The feeling of owning one is nice, though:). I'll pm you once I get around to really using it.

Internet spiders can easily make mincemeat of forum posts and cache their data easily. Images are harder so it's actually better to just post an image of your gear than list them here if that's your cup of tea.

Sigs are also vulnerable BTW :)

but the Planar sure looks nice!

@earl, how is the Planar's output? sample images naman.... :)

Aris, more or less almost the same as the Nikkor counterpart but with slightly abit more contrast... Can't post sample images right now coz I left my sample in Japan... But I might bring it home this Summer. :)

The 17-55 just last week... The 18-200 VR is coming soon Bro. :) Will be used on my back-up cam. :)

Don't be jealous Bro., you know me... This might just pass... Specially the 18-200 coz I still have some reservations with this lens...

Earl,

The other way around here...I already got the 18-200 VR and still waiting for the right time to get the legendary 17-55mm.

LOL! :) I thought about a 300mm f/2.8 VR last December but decided that it wouldn't give me much gain over my 200 VR + 1.4x TC. Besides, can you imagine lugging a 300mm, 400mm, or 200-400 VR around? The 200VR maybe big and heavy, but it's nothing compared to its bigger brethren. :) You need a hand-truck to carry those around.

that's the reason why i chose it instead of the 80-200mm.. i can shoot with it the whole day without my arms hurting.

of course the angle-of-view is very tight on a dx.. not very good on tight places but great out there on the streets..

i know what you mean... i've spent lots of time shooting with my primes these past couple of months. the longest f/2.8 prime i have right now is the 105VR micro and being a micro lens it doesn't always open at f/2.8 :( i already have an 85 1.8 so i want a longer one next - most likely the 180. thanks! :)

of course not.. i use this lenses for portraits. its just recently that i got this opportunity to shoots events that is why i need to invest in midrange zooms(18-100mm range) for obvious reasons..

but then im always out in the streets where i want to go light.. that's where primes come in..

hi guys, i've been trying to backread the thread to get some tips on what you guys use the most as a walk around lens. i'll be purchasing a d40 once i get back and i'm thinking of getting a good walkaround lens for it. would the lens kit (18-55mm) be enough?

i've observe that most of you use the 18-200 as your walk-around lens, is this the best everyday lens to carry around. can anyone explain what are it's main functions (or am i in the wrong thread)? good thing it's af-s, so if ever, AF function will work on the d40.

thanks.

It's main benefits are :

Wide range coverage from medium wide angle to medium telephoto

It's called a vacation lens because there's no need to carry other lenses when you need to pack light

It has VR

They said the 18-200 is the jack of all trades; master of none. Yes it's not a fast lens and has barrel distortion but I like calling it a vacation lens as well. Using it has benefits a photowalker would be interested greatly while traveling lightly.

Yes it will auto focus on the D40. Just beware that this glass will also teach you to be lazy. LOL!

Update: I carry my Sigma 18-50 and Tokina 12-24 all the time...usage is about 65% sigma and 35% tokina.:)

When I had a mid-zoom and tele-zoom before, I found out I rarely used the tele (probably just about 5%).

Going wide, I found it to be more usable, as I see myself constantly changing lenses more of the time. Though I'll still be getting another tele...just for those sniper shots.

I agree, I plan to get the Tokina 11-16 zoom, after having learned that it is far sharper than the cheap-built Nikkor 10-24 DX and the sturdy but expensive Nikkor 12-24 DX. Since it is very sharp, you could just crop your images later to simulate up to 35mm at 6MP (assuming you have a 12MP sensor).

I am not much of a high ISO user so I will probably stick with DX for a long while (for the reach benefits), until maybe I have both the "Moolah and Guts" to buy a 300mm f2.8.

My Lineup....

Nikkors 70-200 F2.8 VR and TC 1.7
Nikkors 50mm 1.4 AFD / 50mm 1.2 AI

wow, thanks guys! that's what i've been thinking.
if i go FF, i wont be able to use that 17-55mm..
maybe it's not really sulit to get a 17-55mm. :)

Actually you can use tokina 11-16mm on FX at 16mm without any vignetting. Which is the same FOV with 11mm on DX - 16mm on FX.
