What's the better size for printing pics from nikon d40x, 8x10 or 8x12? I asked the printer and they said it depends on which is closer to the ratio of my camera. Unfortunately, I don't know the ratio. I'd prefer the closest to the original, with a minimum of cropping. Any suggestions please?

Welcome to DPP.

if im not mistaken, d40x can print about 8x12.. or even 12x18.

@ ricolagbao

I think most dSLRs including your D40x has a ratio of 3:2. :)

2:3 :D

2R=2"x3"
4R=4"x6"
5x7.5", 8x12", 10"x15", etc :D

@ jo avila

If he uses 8" x 12", this would mean that nothing will be cropped on the photo, right? :)

Yup. The size of the print would be directly proportional to the aspect ratio of the digital image :D

Thanks for the input! So 8x12 it is! To my untrained eye, it just seemed a bit long. But I guess that's the right size. Again, thanks!

Hey, greg! Yup, making sure I get the right prints. I don't want to spend a lot only to find out they cropped my images...hehehe...:Grin:

It is definitely bigger than the usual 8R (8"x10") print.

But it is proportional to the dimensions of your digital image :D

It's got nothing to do with a trained or untrained eye. You did the right thing. You were confident enough to say what you wanted to get. You wanted to print your images without any part of it getting cropped.

Cheers!

hey rico,

i also have a d40x and get my pics developed in 4r size

there should be but minimal cropping with the 4r size... if you want the details, my pics that i get developed are 200dpi and 3872x2592 pixels

regarding other sizes... i haven't tried yet

go nikon! :D

The pixel dimensions of your image though far exceed what is required of a 4"x6" print at 200ppi (not dpi).

Your digital file is good enough for a 19.36" x 12.96" at 200 ppi. But its always easier to get a smaller print out of a large image than a big print out of a small image :D
