Anyone here know if it's available locally already? :)

To those who has/own one, please do share your experiences with this lens....

It's already available for 22.5k, although it says "Limited Stocks" on their website.

You can check out this link:
http://www.dponline.com.ph/store/search.php5?b=Sigma&c=Camera%20Lens&menuheader%20expandable=5

I think DP Online Store and JTPhotoworld are the same company. :)

Oppppssss... Sorry, I was not able to check that part... :D

Maybe you can give them a call to check if Nikon mount is also available.

Although, there seems to be no review on this lens yet.

I sent them a message, no Nikon mount available as of yet. I've found some reviews comparing it to the Nikkor 50 1.4, and the Sigma actually out performs the Nikkor.

This lens is said to outperform its nikon counterpart.., but does its outperformance worth the extra 10K?

From the looks of it at DPReview, it's nearly as big as Canon's EF 50mm f/1.2L.

This lens seems to perform well, but the price is a bit high.

funny, i remember pretty much everyone saying that it was soft etc. now the review's out and clearly contradicts it.

i believe sigma makes good lenses. just have to make sure they focus properly. what may seem soft could just be a smidgen out of focus

Very well said bro, hehehe. This is so true... Way to go Sigma! Class leading performance on this lens, clap clap clap. Sure it's expensive, but I'm still gonna get one hehe.:)

Holding out for the rumored Nikon 50mm AFS, not sure if 1.4 or 1.8. I want to compare the two before making the plunge.

I'm guessing the nikon counterpart if ever it is true will be more expensive. Let's wait and see.

hey buddy, musta? if you have the money ($500+) then wait, but if you're not willing to spend that much, i think you'd be very happy with the nikkor 50/1.4 or 1.8

the nikkor 50/1.4 was my favorite everyday lens with my D80 :)

Just got myself my very first sigma yesterday, the Sigma 50 1.4 EX DG HSM and all I can say is I was never dissappointed. I always had a bias on buying the original manufacturer's lenses and never trusted the handy, inexpensive third party lenses but I was proven wrong. The lens is tact sharp and has lesser CA than my Canon 85 1.8. It feels much like the 50 1.2L but a bit lighter. Still doing random test shots with it and so far its up to my expectations. Im so glad I didn't go for the Canon 50 1.4 which I also tried from a friend.:)

while shooting a b-day event last night using my 18-70 kitlens, i was thinking to get a nikkor 50mm 1.4 and told to my buddy about it. but he says to check first this Sigma 50mm 1.4 HSM. immediately i surf some of my fav sites:

wow! nice review! i might get this lens:)

I wonder how this performs in comparison to the new Nikon 50mm 1.4G... The Nikon's SRP is lower ($500 for the sigma $430 for the Nikkor) so it would be strange to get a 3rd party lens rather than an OEM unless the IQ is significantly better...

Got to test this baby this afternoon. All I can say now is that I am amazed on its performance. Big glass hence the 77mm filter needed. P22,500 is no joke. No direct comparo yet on the AFS nikkor?

Tested one. All at 1.4

Recently shifted to Canon and this is my first Canon mount lens.

I read everywhere that this is better than Canon's 50mm 1.4.

I got my copy a JT and it front focused a bit but they were kind enough to calibrate it for me.

I wanted to know how the Sigma 50mm 1.4 compares to the Nikon 50mm 1.4 AF-D that I have but since my Sigma is a Canon mount then I have no other way to do this but on Canon camera and I used my 5D mark 1 as this is what I will be using more than my 1000Ds.

The Nikon 50mm 1.4 AF-D was mounted using an adapter and I had to MF the lens and it was a good thing that I had practice before.

Anyway, here are shots of each lens at 1.4

Sigma

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4107/4988521003_59a7fb4803_z.jpg

Nikon

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4125/4989185406_66e72842c8_z.jpg

Both seems to be pretty decent at 1.4 but w/ different exposures. If you adjust exposure and color temp (sigma tends to be a bit warm compared to the nikon that is cool) of the sigma then you'll notice that they are pretty much the same. In terms of bokeh, the sigma is rounder compared to the nikon.

at f/2

Sigma

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4154/4988533939_2a5abd5d6f_z.jpg

Nikon

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4103/4989201516_f34b44a6f4_z.jpg

Both as sharp (just adjust exposure and color temp of the nikon) but the Sigma still has the rounded bokeh while the Nikon's blades are becoming apparent

at f/2.8

Sigma

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4090/4988548065_b4c8df564a_z.jpg

Nikon

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4110/4988612441_2dec44ba05_z.jpg

Sigma's bokeh is still good while the Nikon has become a heptagon

at f/4

Sigma

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4107/4988564053_964bf0a066_z.jpg

Nikon

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4110/4988623837_e271a2b084_z.jpg

In my opinion, if sharpness is important then you can't go wrong with any of the two lenses but if bokeh is then go for a few more thousand more and get the sigma. Just have it calibrated ;D

@David - Wanted the 50mm range on FF so I went for the Sigma since most reviews state that its better than Canon's.

@Angelo - Can't comment since the 5D mkI's AF is slow compared to my Nikon bodies but still ok for me.

Guys, care enough to give the simplest explanation about front focus and back focus? I can't seem to get my grasp on it. :(

Try aligning 3 batteries on a diagonal position, set your aperture wide open then focus on the battery at the middle. If it focuses on the battery near the lens then you have front focusing issue, if it's on the back, that's back focus. I hope I explained it right though:Grin:

Compared to the afd version, the sigma is better. I owned both.

The G version's reviews show that the afd version is sharper.

I tried using this lens for lowlight shooting. I was shooting at a very slow shutter speed (1/10 ~ 1/30) at it's widest aperture with an ISO of 800. I turned the AF-Assist light of my camera. Even without the assist light, I was able to focus well on poorly lit subjects. Sample pictures are below.

hmmm... based on what i've read... the SIGMA 50 1.4 has shown to be sharper at 1.4 vs its NIKON AFS 1.4G counterpart.. and even the Nikon Standard AFD 1.4...

Before I got my SIGMA 85 1.4... I was all set to get the Nikon 1.4 AFD / AFS 1.4G...

But now after having tried the SIGMA... (with the new rubberized "non-peel" coating... i'm now considering of getting the 50 1.4 EX DG HSM as my general purpose low light walk around lens...

SIGMA has truly stepped up in the 3rd party lens arena with its new prime lens line up... cant wait for the 24 1.4 EX DG HSM to come out...

 wow... 26k for a Canon Mount SIGMA 50 1.4 ex dg hsm? pretty steep price...

in hidalgo, prices are much lower.. maybe in the 20-22k range...

I also know that most shops get their SIGMA stocks from JT Photo...

Per my inquiry, I believe you can bring your lens + dslr for calibration with JT Photo... Just bring your proof of purchase and warranty card... Not sure if the calibration is free... there might be a minimal charge (not sure of this though)... Better call JT Photo on this to be sure...

But the 85 1.4 lens i got was spot on with its AF... no back or front focus issues... :)

daniel,

where are you focusing? it looks kinda soft compared to mine. maybe you should do some tests to check if the AF is accurate.

Errol, thanks man, I also noticed that I was focusing on the cherry/mid part of the whole banana split. It seems accurate but a little bit soft. It could be a tiny bit of motion blur as it was shot with a shutter speed of 1/13 sec handheld and maybe I was shooting too close.

I do think it's hand-shake as the first photo is indeed sharp enough (see the plate criss-cross pattern) but you'll see some ghosting caused by movement.

I check the SIGMA 50 1.4 EX DG HSM in hidalgo the other day... Selling for about 19k :)

Good price for a very sharp PRIME LENS :)

SIGMA is really a very good alternative LENS...
Quality is excellent and comparable to NIKON/CANON... :)

Want to try out this lens, where I can find a 19k 50mm 1.4 sigma, canon mount in hidalgo?
Thanks! :)

great images. i'de like to ask your opinion if i may. I already have the sigma 30 1.4 and soon i'll be getting the sigma 85 1.4. my question is, is it wise to get the sigma 50 1.4 or will the focal point be irrelevant since i already own the sig,a 30 1.4?

would the 20mm difference be a to small?

thanks

Thanks guys... I love this lens

Mark - when I had my D700 my prime lenses were the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm. I used the 35mm more than the 85mm and the 50mm last. Now, I use the 50mm more.

On dx, I found the 85mm too long.

400D + 50mm 1.4. Sweet!

I love the dreaminess that the wide aperture produces. Now I'm wondering how it would perform if it's 1.2!

Kinda getting used to not being able to use the "focus and re-compose" technique. But when paired with the 7D, you get to to really use the focus points more.

Sir may I ask what happens when you use the focus and re-compose technique?

It tends to get out of focus because of the sheer thinness of DOF.

It's like when you focus on the eyes and then re-compose to a, say, a rule of thirds. It's easy to get the eyes out of focus too. (I hope it's clear enough.)

Yeah you're right. Headshots with the Sigmalux can get a little tricky. But I like how the focus shifts slightly. I actually bought it for this reason. If I wanted sharpness right out of the gate then I would probably utilize another lens. How's your experience with half body and full body shots? Is your copy spot on? Thanks

So far so good. I have missed shots due to myself because I'm still kinda getting used with the lens. I dunno, maybe it's really hard to have a spot on focus on moving subjects like what Mr. David Tong explained to me.

My previous we're 2 50mm 1.8's. So the weight is different but has a nicer feel to it.

I really like the dreaminess effect of the lens, I can really see the difference coming from a 1.8. Then again it maybe just me trying to convince myself. :D

Haha. No you're not trying to convince yourself. This lens is amazing! Although, I heard some horror stories about it. I'm just glad I have a good copy.

Strangely, I haven't had any bad experience with moving subjects under good lighting conditions. I actually think this lens is good for moving subjects. I learned to trust it and I know its limitations. But i have pushed this lens enough to trust it.

I usually take more time taking still subjects as I'm sorta selective with where the focus is and this is the reason why I find headshots to be more difficult to hit.

Anyway, here's a Sigmalux photo of a couple moving and walking. They weren't moving like athletes but moving and still giggling.

I have used this lens during a prenup shoot. It's weird that if my subject is within 10feet this lens is tack sharp, but if it's more than that then it backfocuses. Not sure if this is a user issue. :)

just want to share my shots using this piece of awesome glass.. :)
I bought mine in Henry's in Hidalgo two weeks ago (Php19,800) and I can say that I got a very good copy..
I'm trying the lens in the store and pretty amazed by the sharpness & the built quality..
It really impresses me! ^_^
then I bring it to JT in Makati to calibrate it to my Canon body, and woalah!!! its now even sharper!
I got also a chance to try the Canon 50mm f1.4 and I can say that this Sigma is much sharper than it's Canon counterpart..
and with its 77mm filter thread, this one is really very good in low light..
I think the only advantage of the Canon 50mm f1.4 is the focusing speed (little bit faster than the Sigma)..
though the Canon 50mm f1.4 (almost 16k if I'm not mistaken) is much cheaper then the Sigma, I still prefer the Sigma as it adds "pogi points" in my camera.. hihihi... ^__^

Note: this shots were taken with the uncalibrated lens.. really sharp! :)

I also include the Bokehlicious tapioca balls (aka Sago) that this glass can give due to its 9 rounded aperture blades.. :)

I bought mine in Henry's in Hidalgo two weeks ago (Php19,800) and I can say that I got a very good copy..

then I bring it to JT in Makati to calibrate it to my Canon body, and woalah!!! its now even sharper!

Note: this shots were taken with the uncalibrated lens.. really sharp! :)

Hi Alvin,
- for 19.8K @Henry's, does it come with SIGMA/JT warranty? (or just store warranty?)
- how much did it cost you to calibrate your lens by JT?
Thank you

Does JT do cleaning of lenses?

I have used this lens during a prenup shoot. It's weird that if my subject is within 10feet this lens is tack sharp, but if it's more than that then it backfocuses. Not sure if this is a user issue. :)

Here are some sample photos.

Somehow, I am experiencing the same thing. I tried micro focus adjustment with my 7D but I can't quite get my grasp on it.

Hi Mayk,

it also comes with JT Warranty & the store warranty..
I had my calibration from JT for free.. :) they just asked for the serial number to check on their inventory if they released that item to Henry's..
I also brought the receipt in JT just to make sure that the item is a legit on their side.. :)

thanks bro!

cheers! :)

Have you guys experienced having trouble with autofocus or having inconsistent af when shooting people/subjects backlit?

Thank you Alvin, I've been pondering on getting this glass for a long while now, the only issue that is bothering me is the AF problem as some of the user here are experiencing, If that can be corrected by calibration then I'm getting one soon.

I had the same problem with my copy of this lens at a certain distance it is tack sharp, then when I move it back focuses. I also read somewhere that this is a common problem with the Sigma 50mm f1.4.
