It's just a plain, dried up tree (the tree was about 15ft tall), I believe it's a Chinese bamboo tree. I shot it upwards from the ground, using the overcast clouds/sky as the background, metered the sky and added 1.3EV to overexpose the sky. Doing so also grabbed quite a few shadow details from the thin branches.
I pulled the exposure some more in Lightroom just enough to turn the background pure white (well, except for Barenaked, as you can see the upper part is not pure white), then dragged the Shadow slider enough to form a pure black outline for the branches. That's where I stopped because I don't want to lose the details in the branches (it's not apparent with the small images posted here, though).
Added a little sharpening and that's it.
I guess I should've took it to Photoshop and fixed the background on the first one...
Shot with Canon EOS10D (JPEG, wish I shot RAW for this one), M42 mount Makinon 135mm f/2.8 prime lens on an M42 to EOS adapter.
Thanks for looking :)

Interesting concept, David. Thanks for sharing. It's been cloudy skies here so I'll go look for some dead branches and give this a try. :)
It's great that one can look forward to having cloudy, featureless skies. Looks like we're in a dome in that Truman movie with Jim Carrey.

I'm really, really surprised how quick men can decipher "Barenaked" hehe, my wife and mom couldn't see it until I told them. Hehe

I like the last photo at the bottom. It has more detail for me to look at. Hehehe. Im probably used to looking at photos with too many details like colors, objects, etc.
Eye-catcher! TFS.
