To all our Members,

We are going to start taking photo entries for our July issue. Members choose your best photos and start submitting. You can submit to us ANY PHOTO for the July issue. A little hint for July, we will be featuring exotic landscapes and travel photography this issue. You may get a few more brownie points if we see some nice Philippine landscapes or maybe even photos of the Pahiyas festival. But this is not a requirement and we will accept ANY photo.

Rules
1. Members can only submit up to a maximum of three (3) photos.
2. We want to know your camera, lens, and settings so please make sure that data is included. We also want you to provide a very short background about the photo and how it was taken.
3. We will stop accepting photos on June 12.
4. Do not post your photos on this thread. Our site Administrator, Nino Pasamonte, will be setting up a special section in the gallery called JULY PHOTO ENTRIES. Only photos posted here will be accepted.
5. You should enable the receive email function in your proflie just in case we need to reach you.
6. The moderators will be deciding what photos will make it to our July issue. There are not set rules for judging. We will just make our choices on what we feel looks good for the magazine.

Tips
1. CMYK printing is totally different than what you see you on your monitor. If you want the best results for magazine, we suggest that you capture your images using the Adobe RGB space in camera. Edit in Adobe RGB but soft proof in CMYK. This will give you a decent idea of what your photo will look like printed in a magazine. If you don't have Adobe RGB then use sRGB.
2. Resolution is king. Give us a small file and we print a small picture.
3. Calibrate your monitor if you can to 6500K white point and 2.2 gamma if possible.
4. You may want to do some mild sharpening on your image.

Now is the time to get your photos published! Photo entries are open to all forum members. In the future (maybe by our October issue) this privilege will only be extended to our subscribers. However, since our magazine is still new, submissions are open to the general public.

You may ask questions on this thread but please do not post your photos here.

Good luck to everyone!

Hi Nino,

I was reading through the rules and I want to know more about the submission mechanics:

1) Do we just go ahead and post a photo on the July thread?
2) You mentioned something about file size, does this mean that we need to email you the original or processed file together with camera data?

If I ever find something decent to submit, then this is going to be my first time ever so I hope you folks pardon the ignorance.

Thanks,

Raul

Thanks for all the message guys. Let me try to answer your questions. For Willy, yes we will take your entries even if you aren't technically here. You are a member of this forum so you are entitled.

Raul has good questions. When posting on the July Entries Gallery, you should post using the optimum settings for web and not for print. If we like what we see then we will contact you and ask for you to send to us the high resolution file with complete detals. There are no stupid questions on this forum so thanks for asking.

Hi Nick,

How about 640 X 480 @ 72dpi

Nick Tuason

Is it Mike Li? Or Mikeli as a first name? Reason I ask is because we will need your full name if we choose your image. Anyway, your resolution is good for web. You should post your image in our July Gallery section. If we choose your image, we will contact you for the full resolution file.

Best results for print are images shot in RAW-processed to Adobe RGB-and the best resolution.

We would much prefer receiving TIFF files even if images were originally captured in JPEG.

Nick Tuason

Dondon and others,

You can submit anything you want. I only asked a preference for Philippines travel or landscape simply because it would be nice to show something from our country. There will be a feature on exotic landscapes and travel photography for the July issue. Its really up to you what you want to turn in but Philippines would be nice.

Sorry - just need to ask - Is there a limit as to how much editing I can do on the photo that I plan to submit? For example - there are some nuisances in the background that I can easily remove via PS - is this allowed or only mild sharpening and cropping should be done on the photo? I am not even sure if the changes would be visible but I just thought Id ask..

.

Is there a deadline (cut off date) for the monthly submission of Photo entries, say for the month of July, and months thereafter?

Thanks

.

My first post mentions that the cut off date for our JULY issue is on June 12. This date is actually a bit late but we wanted to give some allowance for photographers since this is the first time to submit photos. For succeeding issues we will probably make the cut off around the 7th of each month.

I just picked up a copy of Vol. 1 of the magazine, and it says the photo entries are open only to subscribers of the magazine? Is this correct?

Gerry,

You would have to scroll through all the posts to learn that we are NOT applying the subscriber rule to the photo submission until a date much further down the future. So we hope you can send in some of your photos (3 maximum) for print. We cut off in a few days because we are going to start printing issue #2.

Thanks!

Dennis,

A good question. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY in our definition is an image that has been digitized so it doesn't matter how you capture your images. We love seeing scanned slides so post them here as soon as you can.

this is good news! especially since i still love to shoot using slide film with my F100. :) problem is sometimes, i'm not happy with the output after scanning...

Jennifer,

You can still submit eventhough you are not living here now. We want the best resolution possible in the files so that we can print properly. We also prefer TIFF files even if you shoot in JPEG. The first thing you should do is convert it to TIFF in PS to avoid any further compression and loss of data. The more a file gets saved in JPEG the more it will get damaged, to the point where it becomes unusable.

Yes, save immediately into TIFF and always save as TIFF thereafter. If you give us a 640 x 480 file and we choose your picture, the most we could probably print that would be 2 x 1 inches, not something you nor I would want.

You should duplicate your file. The duplicate should be re-sized for display in the web. If we choose your image, we will ask you to send us the original file, un-resized. Keep your original file in the cameras native resolution and do not re-size it.

Randy,

Try using dedicated film scanner to scan your slides. Another option is to have your slides scanned by professional photo lab. DPI (http://www.dpiphotocenter.com/) in Ortigas and Studio 58 (http://studio58.com.ph (http://studio58.com.ph/)) in Makati offer good scanning services.

hi dennis. I've tried DPI. Yes, most of the time, the output was good, although at times, it wasn't. There was even a time when they scanned my film and the output was full of dust specks. But the good thing naman with them is they do it again. Problem lang is the time wasted... Anyway, I'll have to go and try them again because Studio 58 is way too far from where I live.

Thanks for the reply! :)

when posting to the gallery, resize it to at most 500 pixels in width. keep the original tiff. save the new resized photo for the gallery as a jpeg, and keep it under 100KB.

Okay everyone, we have officially stopped accepting photos for our July/Issue #2 magazine. It was an excellent turnout. I have to admit that DPP members have plenty of talent. Several of you should have already received an email from Nino requesting a CD of your image(s). We hope your files look as good as the photos that we saw here in the gallery because we will only print photos that are clear and with sufficient resolution.

In one week, we will form another gallery for our Issue #3 photos. Stay tuned for the theme. Thanks again for all your support!
