A week ago, I conducted a two consecutive Saturday workshop on lighting for table top product photography. I discussed the principles and techniques involved. And for every lesson discussed and instructions given, I handed each group a product to light up and photograph. After revealing some tips on how to deal with the product subject at hand, I had them do the lighting set up themselves.
For the culminating activity, I gave each group a product to photograph. This time I let them decide how to best deal with the product not only in terms of lighting but also the concept and styling would have to be thought of as well. I just made sure that with the kind of product they have, they should be able to apply all the principles and techniques they learned.
The class was divided into two groups. The first group was composed of Sundee Guevara, Archie Castillo, Allen Chan, Richard Chua and Arnold Viray. I gave the group three related items of beauty product brand ‘Awake’ to work on.
David Cuenco, Yasmin Ong, Ariel Ansaldo, Rommel Torres, Jun Sta. Ana and Don Jason de Belen made up the second group. They had the perfume ‘Blu Bulgari’ to shoot.
The products for both groups were chosen because of their inherent quality that required special treatment. I didn’t bother to check their work in progress. I was more interested in the end product they will submit. However, both groups used a different set of tools of their own choosing in setting up their lighting. The first group used a lot of diffusers whereas the second group played with snoots and restricting the scope of illumination and toyed with the idea of moody presentation in their lighting.
