dave_deluria 05-24-2006, 08:00 PM Hello Everyone,
This is my first post here.
I was an avid film photographer in my youth and just recently rekindled my interest in photography when my wife gave birth to our second child. Initially, I wanted to reassure that my new baby would be well documented with the best technology available.
However, in between baby pictures I realized that I still loved to shoot so I started by taking pictures of various scenes at night when the family was tucked in sleeping. I would keep the DSLR in the car and would zoom away with a tripod just to take good pictures since I had a day job.
So instead of cityscapes, we call them nightscapes.

Parc_Cruz 05-24-2006, 11:04 PM Hi Dave! Nice to see you here. :)
I like the second photo. The cloud formation is dramatic but the overall photo is simple and I just love it. Soothing colors too.

brothers yan...
Pilar Tuason 05-25-2006, 09:11 AM I like the second post as well. the light streaks on the first image looks washed out or is it just my screen:Dum:
I guess you have found the best solution to photograhing in the Philippines..... shoot in the middle of the night so the guards are asleep or too tired to say..."boss bawal yan":D
dave_deluria 05-27-2006, 12:20 AM Thanks guys. I guess being involved in call centers kinda makes it natural for me to do stuff at night.
How are you related to Taj D.?
He's my little bro. I used to change his diapers too ha ha ha!
He's currently in Norway so I'm eager to see what pictures he takes home. He's the nikonian (more creative) while I'm the Canon user because I'm the gear head in the family.
tj_parpan 05-27-2006, 08:07 AM Hey Dave, great nightscapes. It's nice to see how you've really gotten back in to your photography bigtime! :)
dave_deluria 05-27-2006, 07:26 PM Thanks TJ. I partially blame you guys coz' every time we met up you guys ended up talking about cameras and got a little fed up being the odd man out.
I'm lovin' it though. Can't wait to head out again this coming weekend and see what wonders will fall in front of the lens.
Al Mendoza 06-07-2006, 02:32 PM :)
Hi Dave!
Nice nightscape shots specially 2,3! I'm curious on how the shot was made on the first photo. It seemed like you were way above street level by the angle of the shot, were you elevated, tripod-mounted?
Thanks.
.
estan_cabigas 06-07-2006, 04:58 PM overpass kaya yan?
dave_deluria 06-08-2006, 01:02 AM A lot have asked me this question when they saw it.
That's a pedestrian overpass located at Ortigas Ave near the New Medical City Hospital. I parked the car underneath the overpass near Meralco Foundation and ran up the overpass with my gear. It was a bit scary but the people crossing it were students.
I have other overpass shots like this one taken during the recent Antipolo pilgrimage;

dave_deluria 06-08-2006, 03:21 PM Nice one... I love how you got the clouds.
Me and some of the guys took some Nightscapes again last night..

Al Mendoza 06-08-2006, 03:37 PM :)
Thanks on the info Dave, re. the overpass shot.
Nice and SHARP (Post office) ... was this on your L lens? ISO 400/800 maybe?
dave_deluria 06-08-2006, 04:11 PM was this on your L lens?
Just my trusty 17-40 F4 L. For nightscapes, I stick to ISO 100 since I have a tripod and all the time necessary to get the proper exposure. I also stick to slow aperture settings (around F8 to F11) and let just set the shutter speed to underexpose a bit.
Here's another I took last night;
http://static.flickr.com/64/162842593_c136adfd18.jpg
I only took a couple when the nazi security guards stopped us for some inane reason because we had 'magarang gamit'. Sheesh!
However, I was able to squeeze this one in using a 70-200 2.8 IS
Flag at Rizal Monument.

i love the second shot... the clouds and the reflection on the water really made it stand out.
re: taj
i can't believe i never got to ask? i am a fan of his website.
dave_deluria 07-22-2006, 10:59 PM The weather was so nice yesterday I begged some of my photography buddies to shoot ANYTHING since I've been grounded for a month already due to the rain.
We were quite lucky as intramuros was nearly deserted last night and since we only had 2 cameras with short lenses so the security guards didn't hassle us.
FYI, the church shots are all post processed to fix perspective (ala tilt-shift).

jay jallorina 07-26-2006, 01:05 PM hi dave!
this is my very first post here in digitalphotographer. i was drawn to your topic since night photograpy is one of my passions as a photographer. i was expecially drawn to a particular image you posted because i also had similar thoughts when i first saw that roxas boulevard scene, hence a similar shot. here is that pic, taken on my very first outing with a dslr.... vicious flares included...
http://jaydigital.multiply.com/photos/hi-res/7/3?xurl=%2Fphotos%2Fphoto%2F7%2F3
dave_deluria 07-26-2006, 01:13 PM Ha ha ha!!!
"Vicious flares"
Yep, that's a risk shooting long exposures at night. The ultrawide seems more prone.
Maybe us nightowls should go out as there's safety in numbers.
Here's the group shot;

flares are really a nuisance. especially if shifting angles will mean an altogether different composition. sensor bloom is another concern i have...
here's the link to my nightscapes

...taken when i was all alone out there round midnight....with much trepidation for my safety as i wait for the exposure to finish! yes, we should go out in numbers....i hate to shoot with that tingling sensation on my back.
dave_deluria 07-26-2006, 01:42 PM Nice set Jay!!!!
Now I wanna reshoot everything in ultrawide!
...taken when i was all alone out there round midnight....with much trepidation for my safety as i wait for the exposure to finish! yes, we should go out in numbers....i hate to shoot with that tingling sensation on my back.
That's why I sometimes shoot from the open trunk of my station wagon.
Tony Tinio 07-26-2006, 04:20 PM dave, if you dont' mind i'll post one here...thanks. ;)

jay jallorina 08-08-2006, 02:50 PM night owls,
a friendly reminder. tomorrow, august 9, will be a FULL MOON. so, grab your tripods, ur remote switches, and pray for overcast skies to take a break. goodluck y'all and take care.
dave_deluria 08-08-2006, 03:01 PM Thanks for the heads up!
I'd better pack a gun with silver bullets too just in case!
jay jallorina 08-09-2006, 02:17 PM dave,
remember we were talking a while back about this spot in roxas boulevard? look what i found....near the dfa office....
http://static.flickr.com/84/212212747_457f364d90.jpg
are flares and aperture settings connected? do smaller apertures cause more pronounced flares?
dave_deluria 08-09-2006, 02:49 PM Nice capture!
As to flares... I have noticed that having higher ISO (therefore faster shutter and/or smaller aperture) settings do help in reducing them. But the best talaga is remove any filter and use a lens hood.

jay jallorina 08-11-2006, 11:36 AM night photography. if it doesnt scare you....being alone and waiting for a long exposure to finish...in the silent embrace of the dark....is infinitely calming after a looooong stressful day at work.

for those who have non-photographic day jobs...night time is probably the most opportune time they get to shoot, aside from weekends...
[thanks to dave for the advice!]

Norman_P._Aquino 09-20-2006, 11:20 PM From tonight...
After 10 minutes of shooting from an overpass:
Guard: Para saan ho 'yan?
Me: Para sa aken.
Guard: Bawal po 'yan.
Me: Ano ang bawal.
Guard: Bawal po kumuha ng picture.
Me: Bakit bawal.
Guard: Private property ho ito.
Me: 'Yung property n'yo ba ang kinukunan ko? Yung daan ang kinukunan ko.
Guard: (Natigilan) Dito po sa overpass, bawal kumuha.
Me: Sinong maysabi.
Guard: Administration po, kelangan n'yo kumuha ng permit. Yung ABS-CBN nga po kelangan kumuha ng permit.
Me: Sabihin mo muna saken bakit bawal. Kanino ba 'tong overpass?
Guard: Sa mga Araneta po.

:D ha! nice one norman! dapat minsan talaga insistent ka eh. most SGs naman really dont have an idea what they are supposed to look out for. ingat ka lang palagi bro, ok.
next after this one, try looking for roads that curve naman. i think the traffic trails / composition will be more dynamic. sama tayo minsan...

Which do you like better?
i like the nikon better! honestly. medyo subdued - almost restrained - ang colors from the canon.
pero the hues can be pushed naman in RAW. i'd like to see how well the 2 cameras can control noise, say in a 12 minute exposure at iso 100.
the canon i've tried 30 secs at iso 500 di pa noticeable noise. as long as the scene is exposed properly.

it was raining heavily last week when i shot this. so i had to settle capturing it from the balcony of an adjacent building. didnt bring the remote so also couldnt do a bulb exposure. and the thing that really bugs me is the kit lens' distortion issues...sort of ruins the grandeur of this very beautiful building. not usually photographed by the way....
i might return just to shoot it from different angles. security is tolerant and im hoping the clouds will be nicer...
dindin_lagdameo 09-26-2006, 04:21 PM @jay

Earl Gonzalez 10-13-2006, 05:15 PM I really don't know... all I know is it works well and is small enough to carry.
Well, atleast you have found numerous applications for this one... Congrats again! :)
Rolando Avecilla 10-13-2006, 05:23 PM It is not so hampering with the Nikkor as flare is present at the higher aperture stop setting i.e. f/16 to f/22 that are rarely set on this type of fisheye lens by most of the users.
This is rather an illusion though, as some softening of the overall or at the least a big share of the image is insidiously present.

lucky night. the river's water level was extraordinarily high, making for this excellent opportunity to shoot this elegant building.
it was eerie, trying to shoot in the dark, with all the homeless milling about and inquiring what it is i was so interested in doing there in the midst of night.

not as frenetic as i had hoped. maybe because it was already 12am. (the clock seems to be broken again). the original RAW image had a nasty yellow cast and really terrible flares....
will be reshooting this, maybe at dusk or during rush hour. perhaps with the 200mm.

jay jallorina 10-20-2006, 06:50 PM ganda talaga ng tailed lights... hahaha... specially ground level... it always amaze me... i dunno why...
yup! mas longer ang exposure kasi mas weaker ang tail lights compared sa head lamps na mabilis magpa-overexposed....
i tried shooting at ground level kaya lang lagpas-lagpas pa rin yung retracted legs ng tripod ko from the island i was shooting from...minumura ako ng mga jeepney drivers....
bahala sila! hehehe

hazy talaga siguro. at ganyan talaga pag kit lens at walang compensation done in CS2.
on the other hand, it may be the polluted atmospheric conditions over manila bay thats causing the haze you see. ganun talaga ang mag shoot sa 3rd world country. hehehe.
im so used to it i dont even see it in my photos. :)

jay jallorina 10-22-2006, 10:39 PM I think those might be stars? its all in the same direction... Oh wait 245 secs? do you get startrails at 245 sec? :)
yup those are star trails. even at 60 seconds you'll start to see the stars streak na....depends largely on the focal length you are using.
at four minutes, those are indeed star trails.....and even the gibbous moon appears elongated. the long streak coming from the left is a passernger airline approaching the airport. this was taken round midnight at the promenade rocks at mall of asia.
when i started bulb exposures, i never knew what to expect. a lot of what can be photographed at night still surprises me. :)
@ norman. then i oughta buy a new camera! hahaha.

dindin_lagdameo 10-23-2006, 11:20 AM Hey Mickie!!! (notice the !!!?)
Anyway, aperture was at f/22... most of the night photos I shot at f/22 all come out starry. Check my flickr and look for my Jones Bridge shot... starry, too.
So, the answer is... no filter.
Really, really nice to see you here!
vernes_go 10-23-2006, 01:30 PM hi dindin,
how were you able to shoot at Fort? i tried shooting there once but i was approached by a sikyu after 2 minutes...
nice shots!! sama mo ako next time :)
dindin_lagdameo 10-23-2006, 01:39 PM @vernes
At first, I thought it was okay to shoot. From this location, we shot for around 20 minutes. Then, i moved closer to the quadrangle and the guard approached me. I looked back to where I was originally shooting from and realized that the big plant was covering me then. ;-) The guard practically eyed us until we got back to our car. It's okay, I went home with 10 decent shots.
Let's shoot ASAP... and I mean ASAP. Just text me...
Carlo R. Lopez 10-23-2006, 02:06 PM someone should really teach guerilla tactics and evasion maneuvers when phtographing areas that are off limits:)

sandro_mendoza 10-23-2006, 05:20 PM Shot this last night on the eve of Eid Al-Fitr, end of Ramadan. There's not so much people last night as it usually are, the place is not as vibrant as before. Maybe people are already preparing for this holiday in their own homes. I really had a hard time looking for a spot where there's enough interesting night lights. Anyways out of 12 shots here's one i think is acceptable...

jay jallorina 10-23-2006, 05:39 PM stunning sandro. i find the composition busy but everything still comes off nicely. great interplay of diagonals and verticals. :)
Norman_P._Aquino 10-23-2006, 06:57 PM Sandro, that looks very futuristic, and a very clean shot. The diagonal formation of the yachts is a compositional bonus.
sandro_mendoza 10-23-2006, 07:34 PM thanks jay and norman.
the place is indeed very busy with all new skyscrapers coming up every now and then, it seems construction here will never end. that's why eventhough there's not much activities and people last night, the place still looks alive with all the lighted cranes. they say 90% of the world's cranes are already here in dubai. i'll also try to shoot there during daytime this coming winter months, to avoid the extreme hot weather which i hope ends this november.

paul borromeo 10-26-2006, 12:13 PM hi fidel, thank you very much for your kind compliment. what do you think does not make image 1 and 2 not as appealing as 3? im asking as usually i will be able to get good tips to look out for in my next attempt.
cheers sirs!
fidel_mercado 10-26-2006, 01:18 PM Hmm, I'm no expert but here's what I think. :)
Image 1 does not really appeal to me since I prefer nightscapes of buildings and other objects as compared to seeing a crowd at night?
Image 2 is okay, I like the colors and composition but I would choose Image 3 over it since I like the use of the sea wall as a leading line.
Just my 2 cents. :)

The bund is always a good place for night shots (except during summer - they don't turn the lights on at night.:( )

hi sir! i use a cable release which allows me to use bulb time exposures. once the switch is locked, you can keep the shutter open as long as you wish. oh, sa 30D siguro 999 seconds...around 15mins...though havent tried that one...hanggang 10 mins pa lang ako...
...i try to bracket exposures with 30 second increments....sometimes i could guess na the optimum exposure by experience....its incredibly fun stuff...this bulb exposures...:)

Vernes,
It's all done in trial and error. Just look at the histogram para matantya mo kung ano yung exposure and adjust your shutter speed as necessary. The aperture should at least be f/11 in order to maximize the depth of field.
Lastly, a stable tripod is very important.
HTH
vernes_go 10-29-2006, 12:25 AM Zandy,
i usually use f/8 or f/11 for my night shots and i also use a stable tripod.

vernes_go 10-29-2006, 12:26 AM and btw, i can't shoot at iso100 cos my camera won't allow me to!! hehe :)

I see. I haven't been following this thread much so I'm sorry if I took your question out of context. Nice captures by the way.
For Nikon shooters, I suggest you play around with D-Lighting in Nikon Capture to bring up the shadows.
Here's my share from an earlier post. The image is a bit noisy since I had to bump up the ISO as I didn't bring any support :(

........
what i am trying to figure out is how can Jay shoot at f/5.6 180secs iso100. if i do Jay's settings for both photos above i would lose all the details already. everything will be overexposed.
hello bro. vernes.
if you would notice, the reason i dont get to overexpose my 3 minute exposures is because there are no proximate light sources in the scene. for instance, the church and bulldozer i posted a couple of pages back (189 secs at f/5.6) were all lit by street lamps about 100 meters away. things were very dark!
i look for these scenes sir. i try to make sure there are no lamp posts or headlights beaming. if these are present...i can do no more than, say, 60 seconds at f/8.
this scene for instance was shot 71seconds @ f/8 iso 100. i started at 50 seconds at f/8 and built up the exposures until i reached a point where the histogram was showing burnouts at important areas. i do allow lamps and lightsources to overexpose. everyone knows what a lamp looks like so no need to keep the details, right?
http://static.flickr.com/54/244616786_853c748970_o.jpg
also allowed the light fall on the river to burnout a bit. i guess its a compromise between getting a useful photo of a scene as against a "correctly" exposed one metered by the camera's AI...and looking so dark. night photography doesnt have to be all black and shadows i guess...:)
