Hi there,

I'm using a D40 unit and I have an old Canon Speedlite 199A from my Dad's gear. I was wishing I can use it as an on cam flash but I read somewhere that it might fry my D40 since both have different voltages and are not compatible.

Anyway, my Dad suggested to use it as an optical slave so we went to Hidalgo yesterday and bought a slave trigger but 'lo and behold it wouldn't sync. I realized that my cam's preflash is the one triggering my slave unit.

Any ideas on how I can disable the preflash on my D40? Is it possible? I am already in Manual Mode but I'm not sure if there's a separate manual setting for the built-in flash.
Anyway, I really hope it's still possible to use it.

Thanks,

Raiz

Read the manual, look for a section that mentions AF-assist light, turn that off.

Use your Built-in Flash in Manual mode, its the TTL that's causing the Pre-flash.
you can dig in to your custom settings, unless your User's manual is in another language, it should be there. :).
