Its a good thing their on sale. My External drive crashed yesterday:(, and along with it are some of my portfolio pics, movies, MP3's. My office-mate accidentally slammed my External drive on the floor. I sent it to our IT specialist but there were clicking parts inside, they said it was a gonner. Too bad coz i wasnt able to back-up those files i just finished editing and cleaning...:(

Well the way i'm reading this thread it seems Western is a reliable External Drive. I might pass by Greenhills before the promo ends. I might drag my officemate and let him pay for it!

I actually got another 500GB USB/eSATA/FW400 for 5,500 cash - same item that I got from the DPP EB. If you want to have it deferred, the price is 5,800. Caveat is, only BPI credit cards are accepted.

WD Passport Studio - 8900

Finally! My BlackBook is currently equipped with the WD Scorpio 320GB. The Passport Studio 320GB should be a great addition to it being bus-powered and all. But since I already have the bus-powered LaCie 320GB Little Big Disk (hardware RAID 0), the thought of connecting the Passport Studio piggybacked to the FW800 of the LaCie got me salivating  But since the Sandisk Extreme FireWire reader is the last device in the FireWire chain, I have to disconnect it to use the Passport Studio.

Now how I wish I own an MBP for that FireWire 400, FireWire 800 plus optional eSATA goodness :)

Thanks for the info Jared. Am currently downloading the Drive Manager released on May, 2008 and the Leopard functionality firmware update released on Feb, 2008. Haven't noticed any Leopard issues but will install it anyway. There may be some performance boost during drive access. The same can be said with my bus-driven LaCie Little Big Disk 320GB when I re-formatted it using Disk Utility under Leopard. Now its faster than my LaCie 7200RPM external Hard Drive and Hub.

MyBook Studio Edition owners can go to the download page here (http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=113&sid=60&lang=en)

bongbajo
06-26-2008, 11:07 PM
I have WD units. I dont think it would matter where you buy your WD. You will have to register the serial number online to get the warranty. Regardless of your location, you can register the serial number. Once you register, you get the 3-year warranty.

Cheers!

Bong, local WD distributor will look for local proof of purchase prior to servicing units for warranty. Handy made it clear before I left his store that I need to show the receipt for warranty purposes.

Oh, I didnt know that there is a local WD distributor that services WD units. I've always thought that if my unit gets broken, I have to send everything (box included) to WD international. I have had issues before with WD and I have always contacted WD international for support. They have been very helpful.

Nono, do you have contact details of WD local distributor? Or is this the local store where you buy your item?

Thanks!

06-27-2008, 11:52 AM
The info came from Abacus but according to Handy (owner) the main service center is in Libis. I believe Nino posted the address a few pages back. As per Handy, if the unit needs service, I can either bring it to him or to the Libis service center (I think that's the distributor's office)

i just bought a WD passport studio 320GB. i know the capacity stated in the package would not exactly be the capacity that your computer could read. but is there a range as to the HD space that is lost. example when i plugged in my 320GB WD, my mac just states that its capacity is only 298GB, 20GB lost. is this normal or is the 20GB lost too much. i have a 120GB 2.5 IDE inside a generic casing. its stated capacity is 120GB, its actual capacity is 111GB, only 9GB lost.

what you guys think?any of you had the same experience?

Ronald Suello

yes, this is totally normal. you need not worry about missing bytes. this is just the result of 1k being actually 1,024 ;-)

This is because 1gb = 1000mb is just a rough estimate. In reality, 1gb = 1076mb. That means.. if they want to show let say a 320gb HD, they just need to have 298gb. (Since 298 x 1.076 = 320gb)
Same goes with 120gb. 111x1.076 = 119.44gb :)

I went to asianic this evening but they are clueless with the prices. I wanted to know if this 6,995 for 1 TB is the triple interface one.

^Yup, I was able to confirm it, just the USB 2.0 only. Although Asianic said that there's no stocks coming from the suppliers. So perhaps, I'll just look forward to COMDDAP this week and if there's no promotion, then I'll just settle for this one. :)

ahihihi it was a very hard decision for me 'not' to buy after making a certain purchase (which left me to cracker and oatmeal duty...) :) (But I LOVE the purchase)

The cheapest WD products, whether passport or my book is in Virra Mall either from AceNet or Abacus computers. But I suggest you don't buy any hard drive unless you are absolutely going to use it already as the prices of these things go down and the capacity goes up every couple of months.

Just a question on the Passport studio. Will it work with the firewire 400 only pluged? or it still needs to get power from the usb port?

forgive my ignorance, but why does it have to be a DUAL connector? is the reason specific for MACs only? i plan to purchase the same item (120gb passport) soon and i'd like to know what to expect beforehand. THANKS!

hi pio,

it's not just for macs. the western digital hard drives do require a minimum power input for it to turn on and be detected by your computer. some computers, like the macbook, ibook and even some laptops and netbooks, do not meet this requirement and needs two USB connectors to make the device work. one connector is for power while the other is for data transfer. it's really not a WD problem, but rather a laptop issue.

Hi! I'm new to this site and I use Western Digital Passbook for another reason - to store my CD's. This way I bring my music collection wherever I go. In both of my WD Passbooks which I used in my Macbook Pro, I only used the USB. I'm just wondering why another wire for power is needed.

tech geek hat on:

Normally USB cables provide 2.5V of electricity to a device, and in some cases, portable hard drives would need 5V or more volts of electricity to work, hence we have an extra USB cable to use. It's actually handier than having a big block wall socket adapter to bring around.

I totally DISAGREE

The USB does not provide 2.5V "electricity" to a device. The cable is simply an electrical and mechanical connection to a USB BUS.

A USB DEVICE through the configuration descriptor speciafies how many units in 2mA the device draws from the bus.

USB devices utilizes 3 ways of power function- 1. low power, 2. high power, and 3. self powered.

In low power bus function, the Vbus (Pin 1) can only provide one unit load of 100mA and must work with a voltage between 4.4V and 5.25V.

In high powered bus function, the Vbus can provide 5 unit load of 100mA (total 500mA) and must work with a voltage between 4.75V and 5.25V.

Devices that can be enumerated using 1 unit load does not require another connector, others will require as they consume more than 1 unit load.

Sorry, doesn't exist. As a long-time Mac user I've never been able to find such a converter. I've always wondered why, but Apple's always claimed that they're just incompatible...

If you can open the enclosure, you can take out the old drive and put it in a usb enclosure which are inexpensive and easily found here.

Oops. I just did not know, but my WD hard drive did have a USB port - so now I have been able to connect it to my new MacBook. John gave me a USB cable to connect the drive to the MacBook.:)
