It's a given that a lot of sporting events are outdoor. When the rain falls or when splashes are unavoidable, it usually spells the end of the photo op.

The cheapest rain covers are garbage / sando bags with underwater housings at the opposite, extreme end. Share your experiences on how you keep your gear dry and the shutter clicking.

i was planning on getting this aquatec i think...i forgot the name...you can submerge to 5 feet but they dont make one for the 30d...only 350d with no batt grips.

if you wanna buy one theres a kata, if memory serves me right its the kata e-702, it looks ok for general rain/beach photography....i actually wanna buy 1.

in the height of milenya i actually used a garbage bag and some rubber bands to secure to the tip of the lenses but they were to big and akward. i think ziplocks would be better imho. but i may invest in a kata weather shield in the future.

My disaster hungry boyfriend wants a pelican for his gear. And I thought the list stops at fancy shmancy north face apparel :p

I used to use a heavy duty, slightly oversized Ziplock bag... But I found out that a good old fashioned oversized umbrella did the trick best, most of the time. :)

I actually have one... Aquapac. I got it a long time ago for my Panasonic FZ30... it fits my D70s perfectly... it's just challenging to use the zoom for my 18-70mm kit lens... but it works like a charm. The only problem is the droplets of water that "cling" to the front of the lens cover. To remedy this, I cut a strip off a chamois towel, and use it to dry the lens cover occassionaly.

Here is the Aquapac camera site.

http://www.aquapac.net/usstore/erol.html#588X0

It's not perfect for rain... Too much of a hassle to operate. it's great for extreme weather, the beach, pool parties, etc.

I will stick to Sando bags!

I use a regular old sando bag (grocery bag) to protect my camera and lens from rain. i just tear a hole at the bottom of the sando bag small enough to fit the very end of the lens (w/o hood). The hole is small enough so that it can stretch when i poke the lens through creating a snug fit. Then I put the lens hood on and everything's all well and good (if it was raining like milenyo, only staying indoors would keep the rain from your lens :) ) This worked for me really well actually, looks funny but at least i won't be crying knowing my camera's nice and dry hehe.

i'll be going to the beach tom so i'll wrap my lenses and camera in a zip lock even if they are in the bag for extra protection.

Hmmmmm I know I posted something here already so I guess natagal sya when somebody hacked the site.

Anyway, I am still able to shoot even if it's raining by using this thing that I made for my gear.

I bought this mumurahing clear raincoat in shoemart or ace handware and cut off one of the sleeves of the raincoat. The pointed or curved part of the sleeves (the one that is attached to the collar or the shoulders) goes over your camera.

I've used this twice already and it worked perfectly. It would be better though if I pushed through with my original plan of putting a rubber band of sorts at the end part of the sleeves so that It will have a snug fit at the end of the lens.

For transporting .... of course ZIPLOC is the way to go or big garbage bag when my 400mm lens is attached to the camera

question to those na naka Nikon D200 and Canon 1D Series bodies and the weather-resistant lenses. have you guys tried shooting habang umuulan/bumabagyo without any form of protection other than your gear's built-in weather sealing? hindi ba nasira yung mga equipment ninyo?

sa akin, ang isang rule e never go out in the rain without the rain gear. alam mo naman kung masama ang panahon. maliban na lang e nagshushoot ka sa tabing ilog or sa sea shore. punasan mo kaagad ang equipment mo.

i had the kata g-13 and have the kata rainshield. both are great but the rainshield is better since you can work and access the controls from the inside sleaves rather than playing witb it from the outside which is the case with the g-13

I have the E-702 cover and the E-704 lens sleeve kit. I haven't used both the E-702 and E-704 at ther same time yet.

The E-702 is great since it allows you to access the camera controls through the sleeves. The only problem is that you see the viewfinder through clear plastic so you can't really put your eye up close.

I've used the E-704 lens sleeves in the field already. One sleeve fits the Tamron 200-500 and the other fits the 70-200. You have to make sure you fasten both ends of the sleeves properly so they don't slide down the lens.

I can bring them in out next EB for a show and tell. :)

Check them out here (http://www.kata-bags.com/category.asp?id=61&perentId=4&ProdLine=4)

i have a matin rain cover. purchased from avenue for 3200. it's decent and i can use it for my gear plus battery grip. the lens cover is good enough to keep my 24-105 completely dry. i can also use it with the 70-200 with the front portion exposed a bit.

parang gusto mong masira ang mga camera ko (1D&1DMII) I try sa mahinang ulan ok. pero kung bumabagyo I don't think maka survive ang camera. try mung lumabas sa ulan na may KAPOTE still mababasa parin ang mga paa mo:D

naku.. ZIPLOC endorsers ata dito.. just kidding..

just curious.. do you guys think that it is really necessary to use a protective covering when going to the beaches? i know that the "vapor" from the sea would make irons rust easy.. hmm.. just curious lang.. i was at batangas.. and was quite worried about covering my camera.. until i saw this thread today.. little did i know that there exists "raincoats" for cameras that are sold here in manila.

Guys, with the amount of humidity that we have here, won't using the rain gear cause excessive fogging or moisture build-up within the confines of the raincoat?

Guys,

Indeed, raincovers are indispensable gears for outdoor photographers shooting in Manila. The good thing with raincovers is that they not only protect against rain but also against dust.

Check out http://echostore.echografika.com (http://echostore.echografika.com/) the store has 2 kinds of raincovers. Matin Raincover for medium-range lens, and Protech AE cover which accommodates long lens and even has LCD review window. The good thing with these raincovers is that they are insulated. Thus, they prevent inside moisture build-up or condensation, and even works as a live performance sound proof gear - with its insulation it minimizes the sound emitted during shutter release.

Download this store catalogue. The prices and ordering instructions are on the last page. http://echografika.com/joomla/images/nov2006%20issue.pdf

Hope this helps.

I have a small foldable umbrella no bigger than my SB800 thats in my camera bag when shooting outdoor. A lage drawstring plastic bag is also part of my kit (nike bags you get when you buy a pair of shoes).

Must be neat not to worry so much about rain if you're using a K10D hehe.

Unfortunately, weathersealed Pentax lenses won't be out till next year.

So, if you want a total weathersealed unit(edit: system) now, your choice is the Nikon D200 or Olympus E1 as the least expensive options.
