View Full Version : Anyone use their Ipod for Photo Storage?

Does anyone use their Ipod as photo storage? I am thinking of getting the camera connector, and am curious if this works well with Digital SLR's.

Does it work OK with RAW files as well as JPEG?

It seems like a better option than to buy a dedicated Photo Storage device, more memory cards, or to bring a laptop.

Any feedback is welcome. Thanks!

i have one but i don't use it in that scenario. from what i've read, it's painfully slow not to mention you can't view raw files or pictures at once. you have to transfer it to your machine first, if i'm not mistaken.

better to get a dedicated one like the epson or the canon that was just announced.

I have a 4G iPod 40 gig capacity and i used it for couple of months as a backup before it got corrupted. Lost all my photos na jpegs, raw files and some personal stuff. So, i don't recommend using iPod as an external back-up. Now, i'm backing up my files on a CD or DVD... Mas safe. :)

it works but the frustration of having to wait through the download phase is a very big big minus in my book

I use my ipod as a mobile storage for my photos when i am travelling and upload it right away as soon as i get home. I usually download my photos during nightime when i am already in my hotel room. I just leave it while it is downloading and forget about it for an hour or so (ipod attached to a charger). I heard about epson and others but i guess i just have to make use of my ipod for now and save the money for a good lens. But if i could get hold of a cheap digimate II then i'll buy it for sure.

the ipod can be used as a storage device like a hd. but of course to transfer data there you need a laptop. or i think there's a card reader for the ipod also. i dunno if belkin is the company that provides that.

i suggest using the epson p-2000 or p-4000 media viewers. i have the p-4000 and i am very happy with it. you can even view the raw format of you cameras there. very good design and easy to use. too bad it only has a usb connection. would have been better if it has a firewire option.

Yes I do use my 60gb ipod for photo storage but only for short periods of time. I tried transferring D200 raw/fine jpeg files (using 4gb Hitachi microdrive) the other day and worked fine although quite slow. Also used a generic cf card reader directly with the ipod camera adapter and it worked with a sandisk 1gb solid state, however, it didn't recognized the microdrive. I personally use the ipod as backup of ongoing projects from home comp to office and vice-versa. But i believe its much safer to get what the other guys suggested if your main purpose is photo storage.

Yes, I do use my iPod as a temporary storage while i'm away. I also use it as a scratch disk for PS. I use the firewire cable even though they say USB 2.0 is faster. But for some reason, firewire is still faster when I transfer files. I don't know why they say USB 2.0 is faster. Newer iPods don't have firewire support though. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend it for long term storage. Just use it for temporary storage when you're away and transfer them to your regualr storage when you get home.

I got a camera adapter for the ipod...but the problem is that you can only view jpegs and not raw files...I usually use my ipod for temporary space if my CF cards get full and transfer the data ASAP to my mac as soon as i get home

Hey, thanks for the great info... I guess its not a 100% solution... but still a solution nonetheless. I think I will go ahead and buy the camera adapter... not that expensive anyway, saw it at less than 1,500 in Parksquare. I can still use it for my Point and shoot... and be perfect for travel. I just hope my files dont get corrupted like Tet.

Yup, I was wondering when I read your post... My Ipod Video doesn't come with a firewire connection. I wish it did though. And based on all of your advise, I will download the files as soon as i'm done.

Hi JP, can the epson P2000 or P4000 work as an MP3 or video player work like an ipod?

@edu, the P-series from epson works great for playing mp3 and video's, some drawbacks though:
P2000 - plays mp3 but doesnt allow you to shuffle or loop ALL the mp3's in the data bank. It can only loop that of which is inside its own folder. You cant browse while playing the mp3's, you have to stop them. The video's are 100% crisp its the best in the market for fine quality {off course it depends on the quality of the video being played also}; it has a 145 degree viewable screen, like the mac's and vaio's clear bright technology. but like the mp3's you cant browse while playing the videos unless you stop it. another thing is that its limited to .avi, wmp, realplayer (I think) formats. You cant play DivX encoded video's there.

P4000 has much more advances and is a tid bit faster than the former, I do hope the latest Pseries has a lot more flexible flatform and as fast as it claims to be.

Sayang pala, the epson isn't really a well rounded all around multimedia performer. But as an external picture drive, it does a great job from what I heard.

Thanks Migs!

It is a good idea to keep it fully charged. It drains the battery of the ipod.

Having it fully charged is just really a recommendation because you don't want to lose battery midway... who knows what would happen to your files if your battery dies midway... It would be a crime to lose your photos taks!

Ipods can be used as a storage device but you can not view the photos. If you transfer it through the Ipod program, you can view it but you can not erase the files in your computer or else when you connect it again, it will erase all your photos (info from the guys in apple center).
