I've had this thing at the back of my mind for the past week now and I couldn't bring myself not to do the test.
Here's the test and result.
Methodology:
I printed a test chart and placed the printed paper on a 45-degree angle to the horizontal. With the camera and lens parallel to the horizontal, I focused at the target spot (text that reads: THIS TEXT SHOULD BE IN PERFECT FOCUS) at the lens' minimum focusing distance at F2.8. Focus was achieved using Auto-Focus with the Canon EOS 400D's center AF point.
The camera was on self-timer on a sturdy Manfrotto tripod with a ball-head. All settings are the same except the lenses used.
Result:
All crops no adjustment nor post processing.
Lens: Canon EF 28-70mm F2.8L USM

Lens: Canon EF 50mm F1.8 Mark I

Lens: Canon EF 50mm F1.8 Mark II
http://www.randytamayo.com/blogger/lenstest/50m2.jpg
Conclusion:
I think I need to bring 2 of my lenses in for lens calibration. The zoom lens and the old lens seem to be back-focusing around 4mm.

So, the "thrifty fifty" did it again, eh? The contrast was better too.

I hope you don't mind me asking but where do you have your lenses calibrated? How about for 3rd party lenses like tamron, where can I have it calibrated?

If I were to have my Canon lenses calibrated, I would DEFINITELY bring them to Canon Marketing Philippines. :)
For the other brands (even Canon mounts) uhmmm, well...

That's it. Next time I go to Quiapo am bringing this chart with a 45 degree triangle with me :) Will add this test to the usual sharpness, distortion and color tests I make. Now I have to make some tests tonight. Hope my lenses fare well.

Came from Canon yesterday to have my lenses and body cleaned. So today decided to make a quick test:
http://homepage.mac.com/lestercallanta/focustestchart50mm1.jpg
ISO 100 1/640 50mm f/1.8
I think Randy's 50mm fared better than mine. But this could have been shot in a more controlled environment since I shot this outside with a less stable self-standing monopod. But overall am pretty happy with my sample.
BTW, OS X users with the latest 10.4.8 update can zoom in with the ctrl + mouse wheel combo.
