I've been interested with this lens for quite some time now but prioritized the others. Any feedback, good or bad, on this lens?

this lens also seems to catch my attention. it would give you the save FOV of a 50mm on a full frame camera.

From what my friends told me... It's a very good, sharp lens but it's bokeh is not as good as that of the 50mm f/1.4 AF. :)

I had a chance to test this lens for short period of time with a friend's friend(maggie) long time ago, and my impression is a very sharp lens. I dont know how close it can focus but i can put a thumb in front of the camera and can focus.

I have the AIS version and it's sharp corner to corner specially when used with my D200 and has some pretty nice bokeh also . I think the AF version has some corner sharpness fall off but very sharp in the center.

If I were a Nikonian... i would prefer the Sigma 30mm f/1.4

To add: The 35mm AF f/2D can also be prone to oily diaphragms... So just be sure to get a good copy or the more recent ones. :)

dindin, i have a friend who has this lens and totally swears by it. the focal range is much more useful than the 50mm. colors are bright and crisp with excellent saturation. i dont know anyone who has this lens that said anything negative about it

True... True... No contest between the 50 and this lens... The upper hand goes to the 35.

any remedy for those oily diaphragms?

Aris, this is an inherent flaw for Pre-Circa 2001 models... So it is advisable to get something after... Sadly, only recalibration or servicing of such models are the paliative treatment.

how's the focusing speed? Is it faster compared to the 50mm f1.8?

jerrytieng
10-21-2006, 10:42 AM
Hmm.. no, it's not faster. It's the old AF-D design and doesn't use rear focusing like the 85/1.8

When buying this lens, be careful about the very-well documented aperture-blade-oil-leak issue. The later production units should have this defect corrected already.

I have a 35/2 with the leak and I've been procrastinating sending it off to Nikon HK for repairs. So I'm shooting at f/2 all the time. :)

I recently got one... how do I know it's affected by the aperture-blade-oil-leak issue? *sounds like guimaras*

Aris Guerrero
11-14-2006, 11:40 AM
din, just take off the lens and move the aperture wide and stopped down. when stopped down, you will see the oil in the aperture blades.

or use S or A setting, and when you take a shot at an aperture below f/2, most images will be overexposed.

@jerry, can't mike santos of picture city timog clean the lens?

i think it would be better than sending it off to HK.

I'm also thinking of getting this, how is the performance wide open? is it sharper that 50mm f1.8 (wide open) ?

I like it... it's good enough to replace my 50/1.8. Will post photos soon.

More or less the same but I guess what you'll have to weigh is what you need more, the focal length or the faster aperture. :)
