You think UP Los Baņos would be the choice for birding, but UP Diliman's got its fair share of feathered friends. All the UP shots were using a D200, Tamron 200-500mm and a few had an SB-800 with a Better Beamer all mounted on a gimbal head tripod. Although I'd love a 500 prime or the 200-400 VR f4, the Tamron was the economical choice! I need more time with my birding set-up and hope to get into the groove with the D200/200-500mm/SB-800 Better Beamer combo. Anyway full gallery is here. @Carlo: Thanks!

@Gutsy: I had the D70 before the D200, which I still keep as a second body. Feature-wise, ergonomics-wise, build-wise, quality -wise, the D200 is worth every penny. But that being said, the D70 still a stellar performer in my book and will always be a great cam!

@Migs: Thanks! That's the Bokeh of the Tamron 200-500mm. This birdwalk was it's first real field test. As I mentioned, it struggles with low light, but performs in better conditions. I'm pleased and surprised with the bokeh myself!

@Rosalie: Thanks!

tj... love the shrike. fellow d200 user (newbie) here, although i only have a sigma 18-200 atm.
what in-cam settings did you set? or did you use RAW and did PP?

@Gutsy, I got the D200 back in January from Columbia when hardly any units were being brought into the Philippines. That time, there were no stock in B&H in the US, Cathay in Singapore, and even in Japan! Suffice it to say, I paid the price for getting it early. The D200 is much cheaper now even in Infomaxx. It goes for around 95K if I'm not mistaken, cheaper in Hidalgo but availability is always an issue.

@manny, I shot it in JPG quality. I was mistakenly using a Preset WB Setting I had used at a previous shoot, but thankfully it didn't affect the Shrike pic so much. I also had an Optima Custom curve loaded.

Thanks for the kind words, but I've a long ways to go before I even can take shots like Romy Ocon!

ei tj where did you bought your lens Tamron 200-500mm? and how much? was thinking of buyng a telephoto... and this may sound a stupid question (newbie here) but does it give the same quality on a 350d? tnx

@Romy, thanks! I know what you mean now with shooting in M mode. The picture of the Java Sparrows could've been better if I exposed it properly.

@therat, I bought the lens in Singapore. It comes out to around 55K. The lens should give the same quality on the 350D.

It's just an inch or two longer than the 70-200VR when not extended and much lighter too!

I thought it would be bigger than that. Given your set-up... :)

Haha! Well, I was quite surprised with the size myself. When I get the 600 f4 a couple of years from now, I'll have a "proper" long lens! :D

Haha! You know what they say about bird photography, your lens is never long enough! :Grin:

As a cheaper alternative, I'll be getting a Kenko Teleplus 1.4x TC to add to my 200-500. :)

Just wondering if you considered the 80-400 VR? It seems like some bird photographers like it for its weight, only downside is slow focusing. :)
