I wanted to find out if any of you have first hand experience with this lens?

It says on the nikondigital website you can use the same lens + Nikon capture to convert the shots from fisheye to ultrawide so it sounds like a good deal to me.

Forgive my ignorance hehe

Yes NAS "Nikon Acquisition Syndrome"

I'm also looking into the 80-400 VR since my experience with the 70-200 was it just wasn't really long enough for what I want.

Only downside I see with that is you can't put a lens filter to protect the lens from accidents and you'll have to resort to a DIY lens cover which consists of something from Sigma which I read from another site but I can't remember which one.

Perfect!

That's what I was looking for Zandy.

Thank you very much. A prime that can be both ultrawide and rectilinear, gotta love that!

It's just that I find the 12-24 not to be a good value when I really just need the widest rectilinear lens I can find for cropped sensors.

Last Question. Do I buy Capture 4.0 or NX? I have a Powerbook and a iMac (intel).

chewychua

any idea how much for this? :)

dave_deluria
09-27-2006, 10:20 AM
I usually do a quick calculation using YG Dragon's HK Price List (http://www.ygdragon.net/index.php?page=photo/cameraprice.htm).

I just convert it to peso and add 15% to convert it to Hidalgo price.

zandy_marantal
09-27-2006, 10:32 AM
You're welcome Dave.

Regarding the software, I still use the old Capture since I find NX (still at version 1.01) quite buggy(but usable). If I were to buy one right now though, I would choose NX since it will be supported for a long time.

Not sure about Intel based Macs as I'm a Windoze user :)

I'm also looking into the 80-400 VR since my experience with the 70-200 was it just wasn't really long enough for what I want.

Same here, feel that 70-200 VR is not long enough (love that 300). If I were to attach a 2X teleconverter on this lens, will it still be better than the 80-400 VR? Kindly advise.

zandy_marantal
09-27-2006, 11:57 PM
@jun

With a 1.4x converter, you would be at 280mm f/4 with minimal loss of IQ. The 2x tc severely degrades the image and makes the lens more difficult to handhold in IMO.

I don't have any first hand experience with the 80-400 but I've heard it's pretty slow to focus.

Hi Zandy,

Had a chuckle with your last image -- dang thing is so wide, you'd need to make sure your shoes are clean!

Had the same experience early this week, shooting interiors with a Sigma 10-20mm (rectilinear) and found my shoes in the frame. I was so awed by the distorted perspective, I didn't check my frame edges before clicking away.

Pity, I didn't have it long enough to check carefully for vignetting though. But for really tight spaces - you can't go wrong with this focal length.

Cheers!

Edwin

Hi Edwin,

Nice catch

I believe the lens has a FOV of 180 degrees so have to always be aware of what is being included in the composition. The ultrawide Sigma is cool too :).

Thanks Zandy ... just one last question (considering this thread is about 10.5mm DX), is a teleconverter worth it or its simply best to buy an appropriate zoom instead?

zandy_marantal
10-01-2006, 10:18 AM
Jun,

If you have the funds, get the lens that was designed for the specific focal length. A teleconverter would would always be a crutch.

Having said that, for me, it's worth using TC's(have the 1.4x, 1.7x, 2x) as I have a few lenses that I can use them with and I don't mind the degradation in quality and focusing speed. I guess you can say I prefer the flexibilty and lower costs. :) Also, the longer focal length isn't that much important to me at this point. Of course, your needs may differ

I was window shopping in Glorietta awhile ago and I happened to pass by the Columbia branch there...

And there it was! A 10.5mm Fisheye in stock in plain sight!

Well it's MINE now!

Ha ha ha ha!

Thanks Zandy! I'm amazed how small the lens is, it's like a 50mm 1.8 but a little longer which means the securinazis didn't pay me any mind taking the camera with me. I managed to shoot INSIDE malls and all over with it!

I will as soon as I find samples even remotely as worthy as the other excellent shots here in this thread. I'm thinking this should be a good time to take another nightscape with this in roxas blvd since everybody knows that view in Harbor square.

I also have a 12-24 DX & 17-55 DX so might as well spend the night playing with all these new additions to my camera bag. They all barely fit in my slingshot so I guess I'm done for now... bank is empty again but I'm happy!

Yes.. I did go overboard a bit on the NAS, but I've always viewed lenses as worthy of splurging (better than a D200 or D2Xs).

I did come from U.P. and I was playing with the fisheye. I'll try to post some images before I go offline again (I have no access in the house, PLDT still down) so you guys can pick apart my newbie attempts he he he.

Pareho-pareho pala tayo nga sakit. Same here D50 muna ako saka na lang ang upgrade, maybe D80. Once na kabisado ko na mga lenses ko at kumpleto na gusto ko sa set of lenses then I'll go for the upgrade. By that time baka meron ng replacement model ang D80, probably a D90 or DXX

bullseye doc!!! i got all my lens lust ideas from lurking the forums.

Same here...I've been contented for about one and a half year using on my D70 the three lens I had been using before on my F80, namely the Nikon 28-105D,50mm 1.8D & 24mm 2.8D. But after discovering DPP in mid of last month and lurking around the forums for about a week, I was tempted and finally decided to get the Nikon 18-200VR. I guess I catched the NAS symptoms again...I thought I was already immuned! Wala palang vaccine ang NAS...because Nikon system keeps getting better and better as times goes by.

nap_alcedo
10-07-2006, 06:26 AM
I am also a living proof of how "getting informed" can lead to NAS. I bought my D70 November of 2004, and I only have the kit lens, 50mm 1.8 and my Sigma 70-300 APO then. Now....it's history, but I am not complaining. As they say, as long as you're happy, it is a good enough justification.

I almost forgot about this thread.

Just an update. I've owned this lens for almost 2 months now and I still can't leave it at home when I go out shooting. I still manage to squeeze in at least a couple of images using it because it's so unique. I thought I would get tired of it's novelty, but so far it's keeping me enthralled with the images I take with it.

Here's my latest;

Galing Dave! What is ISO did you shoot this with?

dave_deluria
11-18-2006, 02:50 AM
ISO 200, F2.8, 1/20

I put the camera on the lane itself about maybe 6 inches away and just set the timer.

I then post processed it to pull the contrast and it created the vignette automatically in Aperture. I also adjusted the white balance to make it a little warmer (almost canon warm).

Beautiful Dave! If I hadn't known better, I would have thought it came from Pixar's animation factory!

Thanks Jerry.. I never thought of that, but it does look a little CGI-ish..

does it make sense to get the fish over the ultra wides (sigma 10-20) and just de-fish the images you get?

I wish I had the cash to get this type of lens. Saw one being sold before at the other forum.

What program can be used to de-fish this? Or can make shots fishy?

dindin_lagdameo
10-23-2007, 07:16 AM
You can de-fish with Nikon Capture NX... and I think with the CS3 (not sure though).

Here's another one...
