Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go to Hidalgo yesterday...sniff...sniff. I actually forgot the name of the store I called up in Hidalgo...sorry. Here's the bad part, I just heard that the Sigma lens that's worth around 19k is just the DC and not the one with OS...another sniff...sniff. I also called JT Photoworld and they only have the DC. They sell it at a higher price though Php19,900.

Shall I wait for the one with OS or just get the DC? Watcha think?

any new update with the Sigma 18-200mm? I heard my friend mentioned that he bought a 400d body with the sigma 18-200.. that should be a good combination, right? or do i need to know if its an OS or a DC first to fully evaluate.

I'd like to get the 18-200 OS , but I saw side by side sample pics of it and the sigma 50-150 2.8 at a show, the image from the 18-200 OS looks dull , lacks contrast. pero syiempre naman 50-150 2.8 ang katapat eh.

My advise to you, DONT SELL your current lens. its a different lens compare to 18-200... not to mention its wider and faster (larger aperture) and has macro too. when you own a 18-200, you will definitely look for or miss your current lens if you sold it. Both of these lens are walk around lens but with different use or expertise. Its obvious that 18-200 is narrower and has OS (optical stabilizer) or IS in terms of Canon.. A photo hobbyist needs a set of lens... a macro, ultawide, zoom and probably additional of an all around lens. sana nakatulong ako.....

i dont know if its the DC or the one with the OS i saw last monday here in thailand but it's priced at 9,999 baht or roughly 14K pesos. maybe its just the DC version. i'll check it again this thursday or friday before i buy their 70-300 mm F4.5-4.6 APO DG. i'll post as soon as i get the confirmation of the item and the price. by the way the 70-300 mm is priced at Php 8,500-9,000.00 here.

WAIT!!! The SIGMA 18-200mm is f3.5-6.3!!!

Its not f3.5-5.6!

I tried the lens and at 200mm f6.5, kahit na merong OS, you really cant use it at low light/indoors or at night. Decent ang wide end.

thanks bordoy. i'm really not sure if my 70-300mm is a good set of glass. a bit of compulsive shopping before I went to the malaysian grand prix last summer. my kit lens has been experiencing stuck aperture blades which leads to successive err99's. so i'm really looking for a kit replacement fast...

Try the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 DC Macro. Its a good walkaround lens w/ good macro capability. Not as sharp though compared to high end glass but at around 15k you get the best bang for your buck! Also the Sigma 18-50 f2.8.

Or maybe the 24-70 f2.8L is more of your fancy. Its on sale right now btw.

I got this lens for my current UK trip since I didn't want to bring all the other lenses, so I'm just left with this, my 10-20mm, 50mm, and for fun the 8mm fisheye.

As a pure walkaround & everyday lens, I have no complaint with this. The OS is a great help, especially when at 200mm. For outdoor shots, I usually play with Av (from 5.6 to 8) so the 6.3 is not an issue. You may have a bit of problem using it indoor.

At low light this lens will hunt, but then, that's to be expected it.

So for focal range alone, plus OS, it's a good buy at 25k - especially for travel. You don't have to bring too much gear.

But if you're looking to do at portraits, events, sports, etc, then this is not the lens for you.

yesterday, i bought the HSM OS version. i paid NT$13,600 for it in Taiwan. my Nikon 18~70 lens broke under warranty and i was in the store looking at other lenses and the dealer showed me the new OS version. first impressions after one day:

I don't like:
1. most of us "understand" that the point of the HSM (hypersonic motor) is to allow one to touch up the focus instantly by turning the focus ring like the Nikon lenses. don't try it. if you hold the focus ring while the lens is trying to AF lock, this lens will squeal like a pig, and the manual says that will damage the lens. so i have to keep my finger on the conveniently located A/M switch if i want to adjust the focus. the bad side is that my fingers often touch the focus ring while holding the lens by the zoom ring, causing it to squeal.

2. F6.3 at 200mm. the good news is, you have OS to make up for the slower speed at full zoom.

3. zoom ring turns backwards re: Nikon. you turn the ring left to zoom out.

4. the lens cap sucks.

I do like:

1. 3 year warranty.

2. zoom lock. you can keep the lens from creeping while it's in your bag.

3. lightning fast AF.

4. very good OS system. i was surprised by this. i took a ride in the car while my wife drove and i tracked cars passing us on the freeway. the OS system was amazingly good at dampening vibrations.

5. well designed lens hood, and also the indicators to line up to put the thing on the lens. i don't have to fight with it like i do with my Nikon hoods.

6. cool looks. the lens really does look great.

the lens build quality is excellent (I'm a manufacturing engineer). the zoom ring is a bit "crisp" though and i expect it to loosen up with use.

I'm going to blog on this lens after i use it for a couple more weeks.

Hoch, diba you have a 24-105L? Whyd you choose to bring the 18-200 if you can bring the 10-20 and the 24-105? Were you concerned about the 100-200 range?

Im asking myself if i wanna put down the money to get 1 of these since i also have the 24-105L. I just dont like changing lenses specially if it's at the beach....

oh and i also dont like fiddling with the exposure settings....if i see myself if constant lighting i usually just meter off a white object and set my settings from there, if i use a non-constant aperture lens i would have to mind the aperture and adjust the shutter speed....im lazy that way.

but i was lazier when i was in london...i just set my cam to AV and forget about everything hehe.

BTW : nice pics of london you got there bro....drop by edinburgh...you will love the place!!! and if you have the time swing by lake district, im still regretting not getting the chance to see it.....

i've been replying to posts on this lens in the Nikon category. i've used it indoors. the OS really shines in that situation. otherwise impossible shots are possible if you are pretty steady handed and use the OS.

hi chris, thanks.

you're right about the focal range (100-200mm) but also because of the 18-24mm for some wide angle shots because there are times when this is the only lens that i am brining for the day. so i get a more of wide angle and some zoom with a single lens

true that it would have been easier for a constant aperture but the OS is a plus...i think for the beach this would be a nice one to have

yup, planning to go to edinbrugh and thanks for the tip on lake district

SIMPLE. Just put your lens on auto AF mode (of coarse also the OS switch), half press the shutter to activate the AF, then the OS should be working by this time. To check it, while half pressing the shutter, try to move (Joggle) the camera a little bit. you should notice that the frame on your viewfinder should be kept intact or should not move along with your camera.

hmmm

smoothness of out-of-focus areas do not really depend on aperture openings but how the lens light passes through the glass elements, shape and number aperture blades, distance of background vs subject among others.

my sigma 55-200 has very smooth bokeh at f5.6, far more pleasing than the 50mm f1,8 especially when light sources such as bulbs are included in the background.

MTF charts show bokeh characteristics as well. if the red and green curves of the MTF chart are close together, bokeh is smooth. If not, then expect bad things.

The Sigma 18-200 is a 3.5-6.3 lens. It's a slow lens, at 200mm it's already at f6.3 wide open. Therefore the bokeh is inevitably not good. It's also unfair to compare with 1.8 or 2.8 lenses since this lens was never marketed to be a fast lens. Just a cheaper alternative to the 18-200VR. One gets 18-200mm and optical stabilization at about 20K locally, that's a bargain. Compare the bokeh with the 18-200VR, you'll see that there's not much difference I'm sure.

SIMPLE. Just put your lens on auto AF mode (of coarse also the OS switch), half press the shutter to activate the AF, then the OS should be working by this time. To check it, while half pressing the shutter, try to move (Joggle) the camera a little bit. you should notice that the frame on your viewfinder should be kept intact or should not move along with your camera.

does this work while pressing halfpressing the shutter? because i tried doing what you said, but the viewfinder is totally moving. should i give this back? is there another way to find out?

i don't think OS will mean that what you see on the viewfinder won't be moving..it doesn't work that way

what i've noticed are two things: 1. when the OS is on and you press the shutter half-way there is a faint but distinct sound you will hear similar to that of canon IS lens which i take ast the OS or IS mechanism is working, and 2. not necessarily freezing what you see in the viewfinder but try having OS turned on then half-press on shutter - while looking at the VF move the cam and you may see some delay in what you unlike if you turn of the OS and look and start moving your cam around...

the movement you see in your virewfinder should be smooth if the OS were turned off

Any more samples? BTW, I saw how the nikkor 18-200VR AutoFocuses... i think its not as fast as the AFS on the 18-70. Can someone confirm? And how does this sigma fare against the beloved 18-70 Auto focus?

know what Ryan only time will really tell on the longevity of Sigma lenses. However I feel that their quality has improved a lot. They get good reviews. I really enjpy using the lenses. I do have some L lenses like the 70-200 f 2.8 24-105 IS F4 bit it's the L lenses are very expensive. The only lens I did not test was the 50-150 f 2.8. Like the SIGMA 12-24 mm I tested 3 copies before buying one. Happy shooting!

MJ Klein has a very nice hands on review on this using his D80. Lots of sample pics also in his gallery. You can read Klein's say about this lens here:

I tried this lens last night at the Photoworld 2008 booth of JT Photo, I find it stiff when rotating the zoom ring at around the 80mm focal point. The motor seems to be strong though, you really feel a bit of a shake when AF kicks in.

Have you guys checked out the Tamron 18 - 250mm f/3.5-f/6.3 XR DI-II B.I.M. (Built-in Motor) LD Aspherical (IF) AF Zoom with Macro, for Nikon (compatible with D40) you can get it for $469 or 18760 PHP here in the US. I am confused of buying the tammy 18-250($469), sigma 18-200 DC OS($429), or the Nikkor 18-200 VRII($669). Would there be any suggestions here?

I have this lens. Bought it during photoworld for my D40 and I'm loving it. The things I hate are:

- more vulnerable to body scratch and dust compare to nikkor. Dust easily stick on its body.
- you can't put the lens cap when the petal hood is attached upward
- visible vignetting at 18mm when petal hood is attached upward

But the OS is very effective. It can beat the VR of Nikkor. Well, that's for me.

Okay here's my say. OS vs VR = comparable, OS can compete with the VR in terms of stabilization price = of course sigma is cheaper. but the 18-200VR is dropping its price quality = when it comes to build quality. I'll not think twice, I'll go to Nikkor image quality = both has a lemon copies. test them very well. Some says their copy of the VR results to a soft image, some says their copy is sharp. distortion at 18mm = more on sigma, I think If money is not a problem, I'll go to Nikkor. :)

wow! this thread has been going for more than a year!!!

got this lens fairly recently (Feb 2008), and am particularly happy with it. my only complaint is that you can't turn the focus ring while in autofocus, (like the kit lens), but i know the nikkor version can do this. but i can get used to it...

i sometimes (by mistake) hold on to the focus ring while the lens is autofussing and it squeaks a bit. will this damage the motor? the lens?

thanks in advance & i hope you can ease my anxiety on this...

tried the Sigma 18-200 on my Nikon D40 this weekend. not bad for what it really offers: versatility at an affordable price.

pros:
fast AF
wide to tele in a simple twist of the wrist

cons:
lens creep
poor bokeh
slow at greater than 120mm

I think you can damage the motor if you hold the focus ring while it is moving. I think that's the advantage of the focus override of the non-third party lenses. HTH.

hmmm... lens creep? the sigma zooming is tight that is it 80% impossible to creep. plus it has a zoom lock at 18mm so it will not creep when you're just viewing pictures from the lcd.

With it's aperture opening, don't expect a good bokeh below 150mm.

slow? yes, specially in low light and when your focus point is pointing into a dark spot.

it can be but you'll definitely need an external flash especially for low light situations. you also need to boost your iso between 400-1600 (just pp afterwards to remove the noise). i've used this in a wedding of my wife's officemate (not as an official photog) and i'm pretty much satisfied. as mentioned before, it is sharp but don't expect a good bokeh from close-up shots. the os is also great... can give you 3-4 fstops depending on your hand holding capability:)

Is it normal for the image in the viewfinder to "jerk" when the OS kicks in on the 18-200?

Also, I only got to shoot a little more often outdoors lately and i kinda think that when i shoot wide open in sunny locations, the soft spots and chromatic aberration are more pronounced on the left side of the picture than on the right. Is this due to some sort of alignment problem with the lens / OS mechanism or something?

i would usually get more balanced pictures when i shoot at f/8 or smaller.

diegojose
05-12-2008, 11:53 PM
the left/right side might be because of the direction of the lightsource maybe? if not you can always have it checked.

i also get that little jerk feeling when the OS kicks in when i tried my friend's lens.

shooting at the sweet spot usually f8 or f11 will usually yield the sharpest, least c aberration etc

hasn't happened with my unit, but i have experienced similar problems with my 120-400. on two occasions i left the os on while the cam when on auto power save mode. the result was the cam couldn't power back on when i wanted it to. turned the os off, took off the lens then reattached it then it was good to go.

never happened with my is lenses so maybe it just has something do with it being a third party lens

Just got the HSM version of this over the weekend. Coming from the 18-55 non-VR that came with my D40, it's a huge leap in tactile satisfaction. Many say that the build is good but one cannot fully grasp this until they finally hold one. AF, for me, is fast too as I haven't been spoiled by pro glass yet. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the pros and quite accepting of the cons.

A question though. Do any of your zoom rings sort of bind in a certain portion of the focal range? Mine has noticeably more friction around 50-80mm. It has its usefulness though as I can tell by feel if I'm approaching telephoto territory already. I'm not as concerned now as I was before but I still want to know if this is the case with others'.

There is noticeable friction at that focal range, when the lens is tilted upwards. But hey, it focuses faster than the 18-55vr and 55-200vr that I've tested. :)

just got this lens yesterday after how many months of thinking what lens to upgrade for my kit lens. My first impression is its big and heavy, focuses faster that the kit lens, OS works great, sharp images on all focal lengths ( i dont do pixel peeping, it will make my life complicated and besides this is only a hobby) , has a warmer output compared to kit lens which i like, it looks good in my D40.

test shot , cropped in camera about 50% , flip horizontal in PS and resize only....I dont know if it looks sharp to you guys but it looks sharp on my laptop but take note that this is cropped in camera.

The HSM design was made for Nikon bodies that don't have the focussing screw built-in (D40/x/60). Canon versions don't have the HSM label because Canon mounts already have had their focussing motors built in ever since Canon moved to the EF mount. Optically no difference between the two.

i am very happy that a studio here in baguio have stocked sigma lenses for nikon and canon.

the price of this lens here is p25k. at least the hassle of going to manila and the hassle of buying second hand lens without testing is minimized.

to the d40 users, how many shots do you get when you use this lens with vr on compared to the kitlens?????

ive taken an almost 900 shots with this lens OS on, with sb800 attached, and my batt is still half...

anyway, just want to share this to everybody or is it just me that my sigma 18-200 os is sharper than the non vr kitlens. see my comparison below. this is already cropped at 100 percent at the center.

at 18 mm

note: this is not the actual image but a 100 percent cropped of the actual image, both lens have the same exif settings on manual mode.

anybody here has also done with kitlens comparison?

purchased the OS for my d60 few days ago... before holy week at hidalgo. i was really eyeing for the 18-200vr. since my aim is to get a walk around lens, got the sigma and was able to save some for an SB600 for my 60mm micro. as for the sigma 18-200, i must say this is a nice lens. sharp but the bokeh isn't that good.. but since i have my 50mm 1.8 with me, ok na yun. overall, bang for the buck siya! im pretty happy with my choice.

Got mine last weekend.

One question though: I came from using a Nikon 18-55mm VR kit lens, and the Sigma 18-200's zoom ring feels a little tight to me, especially between 50mm to 135mm range. Is this a problem, or is it just me?

where & how much did you pay for it sir? i was looking for a walk around lens & i think an 18-200 would do, i know Nikkor has one but a colleague of mine told me that the Sigma is cheaper, this is the "OS" version right? like the "VR" of Nikkor, Nikkor 18-200 is sold at 31K - 43K, much appreciated! :)Got mine last weekend.

that's normal since the lens is still a "virgin" and probably it will not creep but after how many months of use it will already start to creep and zooming will be smooth...

ok thanks for the reply sir.

@ Jasper
JT is a good shop of choice, they priced the 18-200mm DC OS HSM at P22k. However when I checked a few weeks ago, it was out of stock in the Makati branch. I got mine from Mang Ramon, priced at P19.5k + P500 for a UV filter.

yes it does as long as you use f8 - f10, but my sig 70-200 is sharper even at 2.8

hi everyone..i have a sigma 70-300 dg macro, and i recently bought a sigma 18-200 dc os hsm..i noticed that the focal range from 135-200 on my 18-200 does not make that much of a difference..i mean, it doesnt zoom as far as i've expected..comparing the two, my 70-300's zoom from 135-200 is much farther than my 18-200..has anyone experienced this? thanks for your replies.. :)

Hi guys! Got the Sigma 18-200mm DC OS and paired it with my canon 350d. So fsr so good. Just 1 day old so haven't road tested it yet. I initially got a Canon 55-250mm IS to supplement my kit lens 18-55mm (no IS) but found that i constantly miss out on the wide angle opportunity shots so gave this up and got the sigma instead. Got it for Php 18500 at Jep's gadgets at Robinsons Pioneer. They've got nice people there. Super helpful and no hassle. Proprietor Weng and delivery gal Laura are the best to deal with. Check their sulit store.

This will be my walk around baby.

hi guys! im looking for an all around lens and i'm deciding between this sigma 18 200 or the tamron 18 200..i've read on some reviews that sigma's built is better but i've seen some second hand sigma and i've noticed that their focus ring tends to show discoloration (namumuti) after some time. are you guys having the same issue? thanks!

i'm a newbie here in DPP... i have a 550D with the typical 18-55mm IS lens... i am undecided what lens to buy. Kahapon nakita ko nga 'tong sigma 18-200mm dc os with price QAR1229 (~14k pesos)...

question po: Is this worth to buy next to 18-55mm lens for everyday use and hobby? tia..
