Guys,
I am getting a bit anxious and frustrated in reading a lot of articles and reviews in trying to find out the best DSLR option to get. Both positive and negative feedbacks seem to be always a matter of personal opinion.
My budget allows me for an entry level DLSR. And, at this point, I am leaning towards the Nikon models.
For those who are current owners of the D80, I would like to solicit some opinions and first hand experiences in how it handles compared maybe to the other entry level models of Nikon; i.e., D50, D70/s
Thanks

Archie

nb. apologies for the title for sounding too presumptuous.

archie, the d80 certainly has the specs to impress and has many key improvements over the d50/d70s. now you have to decide what your budget is, how much your willing to part with and what features you are looking for in a dslr.

but the d80 is certainly the top entry level camera imho. specs are very impressive. il wait for the d8- owners to chime in. good luck.

This is Easy D50/D70s is 6 MP, while D80 is 10 MP, and also more feature compare to D70s. But the final decision is on your hands, of course money or budget involve, D50 and D70s DROP DOWN the price when D80 came out. Just my two cents.

Hi! Im also interested in getting the D80 for my first DSLR. Would you guys know how much is the going rate for the D80 at hidalgo? Pati na din po yung d70s/d50 for comparison. Thanks!

D50 and D70s DROP DOWN the price when D80 came out. Just my two cents.

hmmm didn't think of it that way...

Then again, another friend of mine urged me also to go for the D80; that is if my criteria was based only on how much features it has over the other entry level models. The thing is, I am beginning to understand now that it's a balance between budget and function/features.

Now I am thinking that it would be almost a no brainer if the prices of the older models would drop by 50% of their current.

 But that would be too much to hope for.

I was looking at the D80, D70s, and D50 initially but when I found out that the D80 was around 20K more than the D70s I removed it automatically from my options :-D Last I checked, D80 was selling for 65K, D70s for 43-45K, and D50 at around D50. I just didnt have the money to by the D80.

Hope that helps.

Hi Archie... I am a Nikon D70s user... just got mine last month... here is what I can say... AAAAARRGHH!!!!

Hehe! Sorry about that... I was given advice a friends that if you get a camera while thinking, "...but the newer model is coming out, should I wait for it?" He said that if I keep thinking this, I will never end up getting a camera because they keep upgrading models.

So, with this advice, I got the D70s... hence my statement above.

Don't get me wrong, I am extremely happy with my D70s... but I am infected by GAS (Gadget Aquisition Syndrome), and that I am power driven... MORE MEGAPIXELS, MORE FEATURES, MORE, MORE, MORE. (And I am sure that I am not the only one)

Saying all that... I suggest you go for the D80 if you have GAS... but if not... go for the D70s and learn like myself, and maximize the SLR.

Phew!

:) Good Luck!

My advice is to go for the best camera that you can afford, if possible the latest model and stick with it as long as it fulfills your requirement. My D70 is two years old now and even though I want to upgrade, I will hold on for a while because it still meets my requirements. For lenses, buy the best that you need and can afford. It will cost you money to sell your previously-owned lenses when the "lens-lust" hit you.

the d80 kit is going for 65K right? so that would mean that the body only option would probably cost a little over 50K (or 50K flat)

i'd get a D80 once the body hits 45K... (or maybe the D200 if the cost goes down to < 70K) hehehehe

come to think of it, i originally paid 40K++ for my D50 last christmas.. didn't regret buying it at that price because i managed to make a lot of nice shots until i swapped it for a D70s. :)

i'd say you go for the d80. :)

i previously owned a d50...got satisfied with it...but as i learn all of this photography mumbo jumbo, how i wish i've gotten the d70s instead....now i got the d200...never been happier! :D

same deal as with you...better get the d80 kit....if not...get the d80 body plus a 18-70 lens...that will free up a few thousands off the price.

I would suggest that if your budget allows you to get the D80, get the D70s instead and spend on lenses? I think you'll have better photo options with lenses than a body alone. :)

Hi Nap,

Thanks for the advice. I'll consider the same for lenses also.

Edu,

Might have a slight case of GAS.
But still in control for the moment. I haven't made that leap yet to purchase the D80 yet.
hehehe

Go with the D80. The difference in the viewfinder alone is worth it (your eyes will thank you). Held one the other day and really liked it's compact size.

Also, the D200 is almost a year old, so that means we'll be seeing the D200s next year. I'm also looking forward to the D200 based Fuji S5!

The new s5pro coming out looks exactly like the d200 with added features...if the d200s comes out next year, hopefully, nikon will give us d200 users a firmware upgrade just like what they did to the d70/d70s...:D

i suggest you download the specs of the d70 and d80 at the nikon website and you'll see that the some features of the d70 are superior to the d80 and vice versa. but i wont consider the d80 an "upgrade" of the d70. In fact, the specs will tell you that the d80 is more like an upgrade of the d50. from a d70, and if you can afford it, go for the d200 if you want an upgrade.

The D80 ia great for a first time buyer. But from a d70, you'll want its big bro d200. The d70 and d80 are more like cousins. And the d80's younger bro is the d50. check the specs. Dont be sad about getting the d70s. But like all dgital cameras, lessons are imperative to master all its features - from controling white balance to dynamic focusing to various flash techniques.

Photo editing is not an excuse to take dull pictures. Get it right the first time. Enjoy your D70!

I beg to disagree. Other than the difference in the maximum shutter speed and flash sync speed (the usefulness of both highly debatable in everyday usage), the D80 is in everyway an upgrade to the D70/D70s

I agree with zandy. The D80 gave up two steps backward, but made 10 steps forward with the features contained on the D70s. :)

I respect your opinions but the D80 is Nikon;s answer to the new Canon and Pentax/Samsung and Sony/Minolta who priced their new 10megapixel cameras at USD1000 body. But for someone with a D70 already, would you pair this with a D80? Your D50 with a D80 is fine. Your D70 with a d200 is also fine. But why have a D70 and D80 in one bag? And one would not really drop a d70 for a D80. My suggestion for people who have a D70 is to save a bit more and go for a D200.

I'm in need of a third body, before december, I already have a D70 and a D200. Do you guys think it would be ok to go for a D80? (was never really interested in the D70s or D50, a 2nd D200 might be ok but want some cash to spend for a lens)

Haven't tried the D80 but for the price i'd get a d200 body. But that's coming from a D70s user. If your a current user of the D50 I think its a logical upgrade because of the media card (SD). But if I were a new buyer of a DSLR i'd go for the D80, just because it has a an original battery grip for it unlike the D70....

D50 body only is around 29k
D80 body ony is around 53k

never ending upgrade and drop of prices. i got my D50 kit for 49k but i have no regrets also because i got to shoot a lot within the 3 months before the price went down by around 7k.

like what others have mentioned, buy the best of what you can afford. if you can afford the D200, get it. if you are short by around 25k, get the D80. if you only have 30k, get the D50. :)

good luck sa GAS mga sir ! :) :)

Cleober Sinues
10-07-2006, 08:17 AM
I agree with pio, if you got money to burn get the D200+a really good lens, if not then get D50+a really good lens. Invest on lenses not on bodies, buy the best you can afford. Nikon releases a new body almost every 15 months, you'll be caught on a never ending loop of body upgrades.

good luck!

Bodies are wear items :) So don't invest to much on them upgrading and upgrading :) Spend it on glass.

Will there be a D200s soon?

Try this: A D50 plus a 50mm f/1.8, the best bang out of the buck trade there is, plus it would teach you a great deal when it comes to composition. :D
