Last Sunday, a few friends from the WBCP (http://www.birdwatch.ph/) decided to go birding at the Ateneo grounds. It was my first time to go birding at Ateneo and we discovered the most amazing thing .... The Olive-backed Sunbirds there are NOT shy at all. We were all given a delightful show by more than 10 Olive-backed Sunbirds that didn't seem to mind that we were all taking pictures of them to our hearts delight.

Thanks a lot Marton and Reyno. During the short time we were there, we heard a lot of different bird calls. We even heard calls that sounded like parrots. I definitely have to go back there again. Ateneo is a bird haven :)

Thanks a lot Chep. HEhEHEhEHHEhEHeE Nakita siguro ng sunbirds na dugong Atenista din yung mga nanonood sa kanila kaya hindi nahiya !!! LOL :)

We were only about 6-8 ft. away from them... sometimes less pa nga kasi they transfer every now and then to the flowers that are almost right in front of us.

Thanks Fidel :)

Actually, before I got interested in bird photography, the only bird that I see and know of is the Maya and all others are already caged birds from the zoos or those that are sold as pets in pet shops.

In our village alone, there are more than 15 species of birds at least and to think that I've lived here for over 20 years and puro maya lang napapansin ko. You have to be really interested in birds in order to notice them. I'm pretty sure that Ateneo has a lot of different species - sa laki ba naman ng grounds ng Ateneo.

Now, I always try to drive with my window open when I am around the village and just listen to their calls. Imagine seeing cockatoos, parakeets, orioles and so many more just in our very own village... what more can a bird lover ask for ( hmmmmm a 500mm f/4L IS lens would be great though - hahahhahahahhaha ).

You can try birding at the side of the Gesu. Facing the church, on the left side there's this nature sanctuary created by the Jesuits. You can also try going down to the comm dept and there are more sunbirds there.

Love that black background effect on pic # 2. Good job. Dito sa California, maraming sun pero walang sunbird (at least sa lugar ko) :~(.

I saw your links in the Philippine Bird Photog Yahoo group Tina. Galing! It's nice to know that you can find OBSBs in Ateneo. I'll have another thing to look forward to aside from the soccer games next sem!

Woooooo finally back on line !!!!! Grrrrrr parang everybody got their power back except us as in a fews hours ago lang and then it went off again and finally on again.

Anyway, it's greatttttt to be back - HehEHheHE halatang adik na sa internet eh

Thanks a lot Gil - Hmmmm but you have those wonderful hummingbirds naman which we don't have.

Thanks din Jimmy and TJ. TJ, si Ding Carpio nga took his kids to Ateneo that morning and then went birding with us na.

I just came from the IPC building in Ateneo. It's across the Rizal Library. I was there for a Ateneo Sports Shooter meeting so I only had my 17-55 lens with me. But in the bushes in the pocket gardens within the buildings, I was able to spot a very friendly Olive Backed Sunbird. And just in the adjacent trees was an equally approachable Long Tailed Shrike. I wish I had my 200-500 Tamron!

It's a rare coverage of "school birds" as we say. I saw UP I saw Ateneo, it's not too long you can cover all the birds in all schools. It's a nice compilation, i never seen this before. We got almost everthing covered from churches to lanscapes to people...etc, but not this one. It's a unique compilation if somebody can do it.

Edwin : I live in Alabang, Muntinlupa. Yes, we really, really have all those birds here and so much more :)

Romy : Thank you so much. So glad that you liked this series.

TJ : Sayang naman. Next time make sure to bring your 200-500 tamron lens  so that you won't miss out on opportunities like those.

Hi Rosalie, thanks for the compliment. As to the location, like I told Marton ... If I tell you, I'd have to shoot you !!!! ( with a camera nga lang )

Rosalie, those are nice captures of the long-tailed shrikes. Yan yung na miss out ni TJ when he was in Ateneo the other day and he didn't bring his long lens.

Guyssss please, please don't forget to read up on the Code for Good Birdwatching (http://www.birdwatch.ph/html/basics/basics.html) at the WBCP website please. It's necessary to read up on it so that we don't scare the birds away or better still, join us in one of the FREE birdwatching trips that WBCP offers every month.
