Whoaaaaa excellent captures Reyno !!! Did you use a tripod ? or was this handheld ? Sarap nyo naman dyan sa States, you can try all the lenses that you like and then return it if you don't like it... Kelan kaya magkakaron ng ganyang option here in the Philippines. Sweet - just the right time of the day for nature photographers ... The Golden Hour !!!

Thanks Jimmy and Tina for your kind comments.
Tina: I tried handheld but t'was a disaster so I have to use tripod on all shots. I normally don't use tripod but with what I can shoot with this lens, I wouldn't mind carrying one. For these series, I'd say a good ten-to twelve- mile trek chasing the reds.

That's about the average distance I go through everytime I hit the trails. On top of that, it keeps me physically fit. Check these photos of other wildlife photographers. The trails are heaven compared to what others have to go through. Btw, that's the EF 500 he's carrying.

Bigat ng lenteng yan lalo na sa bulsa. Just tested a used Tamron 200-400mm on the Sony A100. Pwede na kung nasa budget ($ 189 lang) kahit na medyo soft sa 400mm at may konting CA against high contrast areas. Returned it and will post some pics later on (ngayon lang ako nakakalusot ulit sa work load). Someday, will meet you in Florida :~).
cheers,
gil

The wifey told me "the bucks stop here" after I made the purchase. But I'm happy and very satisfied with the initial test. I had the Tamron 200-500 and several other lenses which I ended selling not too long ago to help finance the 500. You're right, it gets soft at the long end even with f/8 or higher but still, a very capable lens. I guess I just didn't spend much time to learn its limitations and capabilities as I was concentrated on acquiring this lens. Btw I'll be in CA next month but El Segundo and it's only for several days. I would have loved to be in the Bay Area, such a beautiful place. Anyway, if you ever come to my neck of the woods, just let me know.

That's it Jimmy, now I have to live with what I have. Got your message, thanks for calling back but my schedule was very tight that day and the weather was awful. Talking about getting home at eight as there were lots of fender benders and of course, all those rubber neckers. What a day. Anyway, the guys are planning to have another EB next month or eary Nov but have yet to decide the place. Maybe your place or you could drive back here. I'll let you know any developments soonest. Of course, you're always welcome to test my gears.

Thanks Romy. I'm telling ya, first shot I took, I can't even believed I took it. And I don't even mind at all carrying a tripod, it's all worth it.

Actually Jimmy I took a shot of the moon while I was in Playalinda last Sunday. And here is the shot. I'll try tonight or tomorrow night of the full moon.

I normally don't use the 500 for flyers but I got lucky to have captured this Osprey over the weekend.

Reyno, did you crop that moon? Can we see a non-cropped version please? Just want to check how far a 500 could go. By the way, those hawks are magnificent.

Ryan here's the EXIF: ISO 400 1/200 f/14 and tripod
Here's the uncropped version of the moon shot. The shot was taken just after twilight when there's still a hint of dark blue in the sky.

Reyno, thanks for this. You weren't using a teleconverter, right? So that gives you 800mm with your Canon? That blue background is very nice. Thanks again.

No TC on this one Norman. I did used a Tamron 200-500@500mm +1.4X TC + 2X TC one time in the past and here's the uncropped shot. The sharpening ratio between this and the previous post is 5-to-1 and still look soft. But for size purposes, using this setup can give a very long reach. Take a look.
