View Full Version : DPP Issue #19- LOMOGRAPHY
Nick Tuason 03-15-2008, 06:42 PM http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z63/DPP_Gallery/19.jpg
Hi DPPers,
Posting here our cover for Issue 19. This is truly a unique release of DPP in that our main topic is best done using Film rather than Digital. At the end of the day we like to think of DPP as a photography magazine rather than a magazine that locks itself strictly to digital. For those who don't know what is LOMOGRAPHY, we encourage you read into this photographic art form. Lomography is gaining tremendous following here in the country and truly deserves mention. Inside you will find probably the most artistic photos we have ever received for our Readers' Gallery.
In this issue we also have a MASTERCLASS special. Its heavy on technique and tips and we covering three important elements, Aperture, Shutter Speed, and Exposure. Want to know what's its like apprenticing for the country's best photographers? We interviewed several top professionals and their assistants to give you an inside scoop what its like.
The magazine is at the printers now and we will probably receive it on Wednesday. However, we have made a decision not to release this until the Monday after the Holy Week to be fair to our subscribers.
If you are really looking for something interesting and different, Issue 19 is it. Thanks you DPPers for your continuous support.
mayk_cruz 03-15-2008, 07:20 PM finally there's something after the Holy Week... thanks for this Nick/DPP... the much awaited issue#19

donna_lee 03-15-2008, 09:28 PM yay! I can't wait for this issue :)
mayk_cruz 03-15-2008, 09:40 PM @Michael,
the magazine's issue# does not correlate with the month... therefore its neither for March or April
Bernardo Chang III 03-15-2008, 09:56 PM Wow Lomo! Going to buy this ASAP!
Michael G. Viudez 03-15-2008, 10:06 PM @Michael,

David Tong 03-15-2008, 10:23 PM That's a wicked cover :D :D
Winston Baltasar 03-15-2008, 10:55 PM Just curious, sometimes the DPP UK cover theme is the same as the DPP Phils. Is DPP UK covering Lomo or is it just the Phils because of the popularity here? Not that the popularity isn't a good reason to cover it. :)
Cezar H. Zarate, Jr. 03-15-2008, 11:15 PM This issue will be exciting! I'm just starting in the LOMO field.
oliever talusan 03-15-2008, 11:57 PM Wooohooo! DPP Lomo issue! Congratulations to all lomo peeps! I love the cover! Look at those leaks! Plastic Fantastic!
Whose lomo is on the cover? I love it!
Nick Tuason 03-16-2008, 07:43 AM Just curious, sometimes the DPP UK cover theme is the same as the DPP Phils. Is DPP UK covering Lomo or is it just the Phils because of the popularity here? Not that the popularity isn't a good reason to cover it. :)
Sometimes the cover themes coincide but that has been quite rare lately. Last issue would be Issue 6-Black and White but we used a different cover. Every issue since has been different. DP UK has thing this for Landscapes and Portraits that they seem to cover every third issue or so.
Henry_Anima_II 03-16-2008, 11:29 AM can't wait to grab a copy of this issue... my lomo friends will sure like it...

Please advise.
nino_carandang 03-24-2008, 09:19 AM Hi, I called M-Express today, and I was informed they have no definite date for Issue #19. I was also told, there is no subscription, and just single issues. I was wondering how did the others became a "subscriber?"

By clicking on the subscribe button above. They paid the subscription fee and they get the issues delivered to them as soon as we get it.
arnoldcruz 03-24-2008, 09:32 AM Thanks for the patience Sir Carandang. I got confused with this m-express thing in front of the portal. Everything clear now.
nino_carandang 03-24-2008, 09:36 AM Thanks for the patience Sir Carandang. I got confused with this m-express thing in front of the portal. Everything clear now.
no need for the sir. just nino. m-express is a convenient way of having the magazine delivered to your door without subscribing. you just have to pay 295 for it. a lot of dpp members order via this facility, since they don't have to go to the newsstands anymore.
nicolelopez 03-24-2008, 10:20 AM hey that's cool! I though m express id for subscription only. and here i was last month going around the metro looking for the issue last month! hahahahah
allanayeras 03-24-2008, 03:41 PM I am not yet familiarize with Lomography thanks to DPP I will be enlighten. :)

diegodanila 03-26-2008, 08:50 PM just after a very exhaustive search and buy manuever I finaly got my copy from MIO Magazine stand at EDSA Shangrila Mall besides the entrance / exit to the MRT .( whew...talking about searching the whole mall:() Just a suggestion why dont DPP designate Digiprint to sell copies of DPP magazine. It is hard to get around town at each shopping mall to hunt down magazine stands and book stores that sell DPP magazine!!! Digiprint shops are easy to spot because of their easy visibility and unique sign board.
Miguel Vecin 03-26-2008, 09:17 PM @ Diego - Ill Talk to Nick About this.
Thanks

Great idea ... i actually ask the clerk in-charge in their Iloilo branch if the dpp issues in the counter were for sale coz i don't think i've seen any dpp magz here for available.
Patrick C. Sy 03-26-2008, 10:05 PM i tried national bookstore quezon avenue and they dont have a copy..maybe yhey should have some ready to sell at the EB location.
nino_carandang 03-26-2008, 10:12 PM i tried national bookstore quezon avenue and they dont have a copy..maybe yhey should have some ready to sell at the EB location.
there is ready in the EB location. we don't cover all national bookstores patrick. only selected high traffic branches. nick posted a few posts ago the locations of the best places to buy DPP.
Nick Tuason 03-26-2008, 10:15 PM I'll make a permanent listing of where you can find DPP and keep it posted here indefinitely. Our list has not changed and we gradually add retailers every issue. However, we are still very selective with who gets the magazine. We tried the mass distribution route before and it doesn't work for us. We get much better sell through focusing on stores that can move the numbers. I know its a hassle for some readers but its a commitment to our advertisers to move as much magazines as possible. You can also click the MExpress link above and get it straight to your door with no hassles. Or you can also subscribe.
I'll explore the Digiprint route with Miguel Vecin also.
Nick Tuason 03-26-2008, 10:19 PM i tried national bookstore quezon avenue and they dont have a copy..maybe yhey should have some ready to sell at the EB location.
We used to have DPP here but the Quezon Ave store would only sell like 6 copies per issue so a waste of time for us. You can check out Fully Booked Gateway. They do a hefty volume of DPP.
eggcastillo 03-26-2008, 11:14 PM might as well go straight to the stores tomorrow hehehe
oliever talusan 03-27-2008, 01:13 AM I love this issue! congrats to all who participated!
donna_lee 03-27-2008, 11:06 AM I loved "The Apprentice" article because it really gives an eye opener on the road of being a photographer's assistant and then turning pro :). That it's not all about fun and games but real passion about what your doing plus dedication and hard work. You have put up with the difficulties ahead if you want to make it in this craft...
I can't wait for the next part :)
marctomas 03-27-2008, 03:23 PM I went to Robinson's Ermita... National Bookstore and Booksale but no copy... :(
I want my copy! please....
Marlon Adsuara 03-27-2008, 05:03 PM Any subcribers here already received their mag?
I've been waiting yesterday and today. No delivery yet...:(
cruzron 03-27-2008, 08:12 PM got my copy at the rada office. thanks!
danpagulayan 03-27-2008, 08:37 PM got my copy at the rada office. thanks!

cedrickuytanlet 03-27-2008, 09:30 PM I am still waiting for my copy to be delivered.....
Same here.. Oh well, any DPP issue I'd say is worth waiting for. :)
Ronald Suello 03-28-2008, 07:57 AM Nice D300 review! also, great PS tutorials!
Hmmm, however, "Image of the month" in Shoot for stock has already been featured before, right?
I'll devour the rest of the content this weekend!
Anyway, I'm glad I upgraded earlier this year to 55-200 VR as price now (as quoted in this DPP issue) is a whopping P25,400!!! I got mine (bnew) for about P8,000 only...
bernie_ledesma 03-28-2008, 08:32 AM Same here.. Oh well, any DPP issue I'd say is worth waiting for. :)
True, but there seems to be something wrong if subscribers are the last to receive their copies, I know the logistic DPP has to go through, but this is in fact a disincentive to us. Especially when others are already talking about the contents of the issue and we are left clueless...
The few pesos saving as a subscriber isn't really enough incentive, what is are the perks like being invited to EB's organized by DPP. Now that is swell, really appreciate the efforts.
So all said, I will always be a DPP subscriber as it is still the most relevant and economical printed source of pride, information , and joy in the Philippine photography scene. http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif

Kudos to Dpp! the exposure article is a big big help!
Also Sir Bernie saw your fire photo too!:)
Ronald Suello 03-28-2008, 10:39 AM This might be a stupid question because I dunno a thing about lomography: how come there's no sample picture of a "lomography" camera in the main article?
It seems lomography is totally 100% about the output (re: image) but, just for curiosity, what does a typical lomography camera/film canister look like?

Hi Ronald, there a lot of different cameras that were produced by the LOMO LSI :) here's a link to the microsite of the popular lca+, which is they say, the mother of all lomo cameras :)

That's disappointing. Output lang? Well, i still don't have my copy and this spoiled it. It would be nice to see a side by side review with the output since the issue was dedicated to lomography. I believe, its the best constructive comment I've heard so far about the issue.:Scared::Scared:

Derick_Gamboa 03-28-2008, 12:51 PM LBC MAN JUST DROPPED IT OFF AS THIS IS POSTED 12:50PM :)
@BernieLed - way to go buddy, like that fire entry for the critique section of Prof Molina.
Got to read more on that lomo thingy, and how they get those colors. How's cross processing output as opposed to PS-in treatment??

well you got positive film that's saturated to begin with. cross process it in c-41 and viola you have colors gone wild. :D

The PS treatment comes close to simulating the cross process treatment. You just need to add a little bit of grain to simulate the film look even more.
Derick_Gamboa 03-28-2008, 01:32 PM Nin's Otep, Danka! Who says you can't teach old dogs new tricks!:) thank you!
nino_carandang 03-28-2008, 01:33 PM are you going to the EB? i'm thinking of teaching it there.

try looking up Alienskin Exposure 2.0 and Nik Color Efex 3.0 my friend. that should start you in your path towards film simulation.

LBC's turning shoddy these days - got my prints delivered late from Digiprint as well.. Maybe it's because of the recent holidays? Hmmm.. :)
Patrick C. Sy 03-28-2008, 09:50 PM Sir Nick and Sir Nino, thank you for your reply..
Bong Tan 03-28-2008, 10:04 PM hooray can't wait...

danpagulayan 03-28-2008, 10:46 PM Finally, as I was stepping out of the office, my issue arrived.
Thanks, DPP!!!
Rowena_Clemente 03-29-2008, 12:48 AM Finally got a copy at Fully Booked Boni-High Street. It was out-of stock at National bookstore, Glorietta.
Reydian_Tianero 03-29-2008, 12:54 AM I still haven't received mine.
@Nino/Nick, is it possible to get the freight tracking # from you guys so i may followup with LBC or at least schedule the delivery incase i have missed it.
mark_imbong 03-29-2008, 12:28 PM i left for an office-related activity in tarlac on thursday and felt kinda sad when my issue hadn't been delivered yet.
when i got back yesterday evening, though, i was pleasantly surprised to find my issue just waiting for my in my pigeon-hole. alright!
so far, i've only managed to sit down and read through the article on photo assistants (sorry, forgot the title), and found it to be very, very informative, especially with some very enlightening thoughts shared by masters such as john "are you married?" chua and jo avila.
that article alone did it for me in this issue. congratulations again to all the editors for another great issue!:)
OliverGoquingco 03-29-2008, 04:00 PM my copy was delivered today....it even came with a deck of crumpler playing cards. Something to look forward to again during my spare time. ;-)
Michael_Dolero 03-29-2008, 04:24 PM di ba lomo doesn't have manual functions on Shutter, Aperture and Focus?
nino_carandang 03-29-2008, 06:41 PM di ba lomo doesn't have manual functions on Shutter, Aperture and Focus?
hmmm. good question. some do have focus rings, some don't. some have aperture, some don't. it depends on what camera you are using. i believe in some models, shutter speed is constant.
nino_carandang 03-29-2008, 07:02 PM hmmm. good question. some do have focus rings, some don't. some have aperture, some don't. it depends on what camera you are using. i believe in some models, shutter speed is constant.
one thing we should realized also is that lomo is more of a lifestyle than just about the camera. i've seen people use a medium format camera (complete with all the settings) and the end result is a lomo photo.
leonorauy 03-29-2008, 07:15 PM got my issue #19 yesterday! :) i'm not even done reading with issue# 17 and 18 yet! this mag is really worth it..every page! i just finished reading the photographer's asst. topic...somehow, i can relate to the topic. I was one of those unfortunate applicant who went to Mr.Chua's office years ago (like around 9 years ago i think?) and tried my luck applying for the photographer's assistant position..i was turned down because he told me he prefer guys as an assistant because He would require them to carry heavy equipments..i was disappointed of course, because i was really eager to learn more about photography by applying as a photographer's assistant and i didn't mind carrying heavy stuff! but i know it wasn't for me..so sympre no hard feelings naman. actually, after a year i also applied for the same position, this time for Mr. Raymond Isaac..unfortunately, i was turned down again, with the same reason..sayang nga coz sir raymond even told me na he liked me, coz he liked my resume and he had 2nd thoughts of hiring me but he was kind enough to informed me the next day that he would still consider getting a guy as an assistant. sayang nga eh. but it's ok. i did get to learn different styles from other well known photographers in the industry coz i ended up being an wardrobe/food/product stylist instead :)
Marlon Adsuara 03-29-2008, 07:30 PM Finally! Got my issue #19. Now...read...read...read....:)

Thank you for the nice comments about DPP. Your first post was nice to read and we're glad that the Master and Servant article meant something to you. There is a second part to this, stay tuned.
Dohn Nalumen 03-29-2008, 10:39 PM Try MX Megamall, beside toy kingdom...
Ei! I MUST say Thank you to you sir. If it wasnt for this post, I would have been so sad that day. I tried already gateway, shangrila, glorietta, Galleria, Rob Pioneer but wasnt so lucky. Until I came across your post. I rushed to SM Mega just about 5 minutes before the mall closed for the day. THANK YOU...as in salamat talaga!!!
Jo Avila 03-30-2008, 01:48 AM di ba lomo doesn't have manual functions on Shutter, Aperture and Focus?
It depends on the lomo camera being used :D
I have about four lomo cameras and their specs are as follows:
1) The Holga 120GN has two f/stops settings (f/10 & f/14 I think) and two shutter speed settings (1/100 & Bulb).
2) The Diana+ has three aperture settings, a pinhole setting and two shutter speed choices ("normal" and bulb).
3) The Fisheye2 has only one f/stop and one "normal" shutter speed setting and bulb.
4) The Smena 8M has apertures ranging from f/4 to f/16 and shutter speeds of Bulb and 1/15 to 1/250.
Cheers!
Jo Avila

Lots of copies in Bibliarch in Walter Mart at the corner of Pasay Road (Arnaiz) and Pasong Tamo (what's this street's new name?). It's across from Don Bosco. This is in Makati, but pretty close to SLEX so you don't have to fight your way into the bigger malls.

otep_benavides 03-30-2008, 04:54 PM lots of copies at national bookstore, greenbelt 1

nicolelopez 03-30-2008, 07:19 PM Got myself a copy!!! My subscription finally arrived!
cedrickuytanlet 03-30-2008, 09:36 PM got my copy yesterday.
regarding aperture settings in lomo cams, i've read that the holga, though it does say it has 2 aperture settings (f8 and f11), the switch doesn't really work, so you end up with one - something like an f13.
People go out of the way to modify it just so they'd have 2 settings. For me, I don't mind.. I like it just the way it is.
Cheers, guys and great job on this issue. Looking forward for number 20.
RameloGusilatar 03-31-2008, 03:02 AM Kudos to the DPP Mag team!!! Really great magazine and quality print. You'd be reading this from cover to cover. Very useful and enriching as well. Keep it up and looking forward to future issues .... any back-issues available?? Thanks! :)
mackoie villanueva 03-31-2008, 08:52 AM got my copy now...my friend bought it from fully booked in greenhills.
it's time to read it now!!! :):)
Ken Batallones 03-31-2008, 09:43 AM I originally got this copy for the article on Lomo, but I was more than happy to read about "The Apprentice". It was so informative and inspiring. Now I know what to do if and when I get my own apprentices someday, haha!
:D
But seriously, that article brings to focus that professional photography is not as glamorous as most people (myself included) believe it to be. It was a great article that, to paraphrase Casey Kasem, "keeps ones' feet on the ground and keeps one reaching for the stars." I have nothing but admiration for these lucky apprentices who value the privilege they have and know that they'll be the ones to look up to soon. I look forward to Part 2!
:)
The tutorial on Dramatic Mosaics was simply awesome and I immediately put it to practice:

oliever talusan 04-01-2008, 03:23 PM That's disappointing. Output lang? Well, i still don't have my copy and this spoiled it. It would be nice to see a side by side review with the output since the issue was dedicated to lomography. I believe, its the best constructive comment I've heard so far about the issue.:Scared::Scared:
There should be another issue for lomo as a follow up. haha. It's hot and sizzling! Thanks to DPP for the great issue. It's my dream to see my shots in this magazine! Lomo on!

Nick Tuason 04-18-2008, 05:04 AM Not in our office any longer. I would take a shot at MIO Magazines - 5th Floor Shangrila, MOA, and Podium. Also try MX at Megamall beside Toy Kingdom. They may still have a piece or two remaining.

Johnny Lim 05-16-2008, 08:59 PM just bought issue #19 at Podium yesterday, issue #20 is it already available somewhere?
troygonzalez 05-25-2008, 10:00 AM i like issue #19 very much =) especially the topic for shooting fire =) its great! =)
one little comment though, there is no "degress kelvin" it's just kelvin. "1700 kelvins". if the"k" is capitalized, (ie Kelvin) it refers to the scale. and if it is not capitalized, (ie kelvin) it refers to the unit of temperature =)
