Mods: Cross-Posting warning. This is a cross-posting of my reply to a thread (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=1126&page=8) in the Sports section. This really is not a reply but a question. I do not know whether to start a new thread for this one or not. I am thinking that this is more of a wedding question than a sports question. Plus I was just thinking that some wedding photogs we have here might not wonder there so I put it here. If not allowed, please delete.

Here goes....

------------------

I have a question. I have a wedding to go to tomorrow morning (Saturday PM dyan sa Pinas) and since I am just a second photog I'd like to try some experimentations. I want to try to capture this image (http://www.anseldeilara.com/dwf/dinolara87.jpg) by Mr. Dino Lara that he posted in this (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=1015) thread. Was panning used here? And actually, I have a major question with regards to panning. Do you have to have your camera set to continuous (AF-C) focus? When do you press your shutter half way? The start of your panning or at the moment of capture?

I am using D70 and I tried using AF-C before and I felt that focus is very slow. A lot of times I get blurred shots. So what I just do is set the camera to AF-S and then I just press and press and press the shutter half-way til I get to the point that I want to shoot, e.g., during bridal procession.

Thanks in advance.

Marco

I didn't use any panning here. I used my 30/1.4 sigma so I freeze the walk even at low light. I did a lot of PS burning and curves adjustments in that particular image.

This kind of shot is already part of my usual walk shots but good image doesn't come all the time. I sometimes get blurred shots especially when the bride walk so fast.

Thanks Earl. Thanks Mr. Dino.

I forgot that brides walk here with their parents in tow from the start of the procession, not halfway through. And my fastest lens is a 50mm f/1.8, which I dot bring at weddings. Maybe I should? I will still try to see if I can get this image. Thanks a lot!

I really appreciate Mr. Dino Lara's very selfless act of sharing his knowledge to people who, like me, are newbies to wedding photography. You are an idol and you really deserve all the praises! We are truly lucky to have you on-board.

Here's my try in the wedding I shot this morning. Not as good but I tried...

Very nice. You got it all perfect, the lines, the framing and especially the mood.

Question: some highlights on her dress is blown out, is it intentional?

Sir Dino,

Coming from you, this means a lot :).

The blown-out highlights, uhm, erhm, it wasn't intentional... :Scared: . This was exposed at f/2.8 and 1/15 secs. Maybe I should have increased the shutter speed to 1/30th. Could I have done something to make it better? Any payo or suggestions, Sir? Maybe I'll try to do it again in my next wedding which is this Saturday. Second fotog ulit ako so I can experiment again....

Thanks Marco

I used a 17-55mm f/2.8 lens here at ISO 400.

Cheers!

Tsamba pala. hehehe. :)

I'm just imagining if you got the right exposure on her dress, that may give us a boring picture. I think the shot is perfect already.

What you can do on your next wedding is do the same shot but this time perfectly exposed on her dress. Or do bracketing. This way, you have same shot but different flavor.

He he he... okay din naman pala kapag nakaka-tsamba :D.

Salamat talaga Mr. Dino. I'll try to incorporate your suggestions in my next wedding.

Okay naman daw sya sabi ng Master (Mr. Dino) eh... so I'm fine with it... :), we're all friends and colleagues here. Chris must have referenced the reply I posted in this (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=1316&page=2) thread.

Cheers!

it was just the colors that got to me.....the whiteness of the bride against the rust colored background and the cross really added to how my mind accepted the image....im really scared of such stuff so anything resembling them my mind quickly jumps towards that mental image.

im not here to offend anyone so pardon me for the comments i made if i did ruffle some feathers....like what sir marco said, we are all friends here and i really dont try to off friends...

pero i would still want to extend my apologies sir marco, the comment (after reading it again) was really not made in the proper context....para talaga syang masama basahin....sorry po talaga sir
