Not sure if this should be in the gear forum, but as this glass is used mostly for wildlife, I reckon this might be the right forum (Mods, please transfer if I chose wrongly).

Miles Hecker's review of my favorite birding lens is now up at Luminous Landscape. He previously asked my permission to link to my tests of the same lens....:)

Miles Hecker's Sigmonster review (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/sigma-300-800.shtml)

For those contemplating bird photography, this glass is as close to bird shooting paradise as 99.99999% of mortals can get. The real paradise of course is either the 1200 5.6L (for Canonites) or the 1200-1700 f/5.6-8 P IF ED (for Nikon shooters), but these are reserved for the chosen very few - people who have bottomless pockets, or who work for big organizations like SI and National Geographic.

Romy

Congrats Romy. After I've held that 500 some weeks ago, now you've made me rethink my next lens birding lens.

Thanks Romy for the heads-up... It has been a while since I last visited Mr. Reichman's site... :)

PS: How can I get into National Geographic? :D Wishing here...

Hi Reyno,

When you get something longer than the 100-400 L IS, I'd recommend the 500 f4 IS - lighter and the IS would make it hand holdable.

It's when you'll plan to get an even longer glass than the 500 f4 that the Sigmonster makes a worthy alternative to the 600 f4 IS. Both are very heavy and essentially tripod/bean bag only lenses. One has IS and the other has zoom flexibility. Both are super-sharp and I believe IQ won't be the issue when choosing between the two.

Earl,

Hehe... I think one way is to capture a yet unphotographed creature which probably doesn't exist in the real world - Yeti, Ivory-billed Woodpecker, or an honest Pinoy politician...:D
