creating a new thread for this as requested as adviced.

I've been comparing D50 and D70s further and have additional questions...

1. sensitivity steps. 1 EV steps(D50) vs. 1/3 EV steps (D70s). Would I need the 1/3 steps? Or can I live without it and 1 steps would be enough? Without the 1/3 steps, is flexibility compromised to a great extent? Like I would not be able to achieve certain shots or hindi naman?

2. max shutter speed. 1/4000 vs 1/8000. I dont need the 1/8000 speed right?

Pasensya na madaming tanong pero sobrang salamat talaga sa inyo.. napapadali ang pagpili ko :)

Moderators, not sure if this is the right place for this. I was thinking this can be placed in thew newbie section as well. Kindly move based on your discretion. Thanks!!

Angelo... This is just a simple answer, non specific at that... However, you might find it useful:

If you're currently searching for a camera to start with or develop your skills... Just choose the best one your money can buy... Get something that would give you greater flexibility in terms of features and settings, so that your growth would not be hampered because of gear limitation...

In an attempt to answer your questions above...
1.) Though 1EV steps is certainly usable... of course if you can go a fraction of that at 1/3EV would be better... You might need this in certain conditions...

2.) Having a higher shutter speed is of course better in some situations or applications...

About Practicality:
"It's better to have one prepared and not need it; than to need it and not have one..." :D

not to mention the D70s CLS capability with its built-in speedlight. :-)

Amen Brotha!

But d70 + CLS :) its really handy, not to mention if you get the kit you have the 18-70 :)

Value and Sharpness - D50

A little speed and options - D70s

i like the D50 because of the ease of use and design, has a mode dial for kids - vivid colors which is really nice unlike the D70, if you want to have vivid colors you have to set it under menu and change the color space. the only thing i was worried with the D50 is the luck of LCD protector. both models are nice and like them both...Nikon is the best!

if i may add...

D50 - performs better on high ISO

D70 - bigger body with 2 command dials

CF for D70 while the D50 uses SDcard

your choice...both are great cameras, congrats for choosing nikon :)

u cant go wrong with nikon dude!

however, here are links which compare the d50 to the d70s:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond50/page20.asp and
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0504/05042003nikond70s.asp

i suggest you get what you can afford! if u like to save a little go for the d50, otherwise d70s! just bear in mind that d50 uses SD cards while d70s uses CFs. (d80 ka nalang kaya? heheheh)

uy, daming sumagot! salamat salamat at salamat ng marami! :)

I actually have decided over the weekend.. D70s it is!!! What I did was basically go thru what the D70s has that the D50 does not have (CLS, kit lens, some flexibility, and all those mentioned above) and see if these were worth the price difference (around 8-10K). Sa tingin ko naman worth it ang difference nila with all the additional features that the D70s has.. tama ba? :)

Salamat sa inyo ulit! Madadalas na ako sa forum na ito :) Wala ng urungan ito, ang laki ng gastos e hehehe

it's actually easier to do bulb exposures with the d50s IR remote rather than the cable release! (IMO) :)

I've owned the d50 before and you can't get wrong with this body if you're going to do celestial shots! great noise supression at higher ISOs...

As for the d70s, it's a great body as well, successor to the camera of the year d70.

congratulations on your choice! :)

I bought a D50 and I also had the same problem 3months back in deciding whether to get a D70s or a D50. Like what you mentioned in your earlier posts that if you can do without the things the D50 doesn't have that the D70s got, go for the D50. At the same time I have small hands kaya OK lang sa akin ang D50 and besides nagsisimula pa lang ako sa DSLR. After two months lumabas naman ang D80 and I told myself most probably if I would like to upgrade next year I'll go for the D80  because of the SD cards I have collected which I used for my D50 and the accessories and lenses also. Nikon takes care of its own. Don't worry whichever model you choose, you're still in good hands. Sige bili na and inform us what you bought and we will welcome you with open arms in the Dark Side.

my first DSLR was a nikon D50, then my uncle offered to swap his brand new D70s for it. go figure why.

I like the ergonomics of the D70s better than the D50, but I like the image quality of the latter over the former. :)
