I'm very curious how to develop and "print" my own own b&w film but I really don't know where to start.

I'm wondering if there are enough curious people like me and people willing to teach to start some b&w seminar eb (what the?), or if there are any seminars currently that teaches the sort that I can attend to :)

Thanks :), it's one of the things that I really wanted to learn since I 'd gotten interested in photography.

This niche group called Rangefinder Filipinas sometimes hold film developing sessions, but I think they -ok, ok, WE- will be busy with shoots the next few weeks.

Mike Alcid did a short lecture on b&w processing for the QC group of Lomomanila a few weeks ago.

We had it at xocolat near Ateneo :D

Cheers!

i wonder if they still use an analog timer for film developing. i still have an un-used GRALAB Timer i want to dispose of. Got this many moons ago just before i semi-retired from photography because it was getting too expensive.

i know this should be in another thread but since the topic is black and white developing, i thought i'd post it here.

@ donna, raena abella (also a member here) is openning her darkroom (for developing and printing) anytime this week and she will give a quick 'how to' process. She's from Antipolo. I can holla at you if i get the exact date.

@nick...kindly pm me regarding details on your Gralab. Thanks

Like what Sir Jo mentioned almost all the sessions are held in the QC area, a place where I am not particularly familiar with plus really far from where I'm at :(, by any chance there would be some sort of event like that happening around the makati area, I hope it gets posted here. :)

I'm curious enough and would love to join as well. Took it up in my Basic Photo class, but i'd love to get in "deeper" BW developing.

i can probably help you guys and show you the method that i know.

the thing is, my process involves a lot of items that are so "DIY"

i am using the following:
an AP developing tank with 2 adjustable reels (i can either develop 2x135 or 1x120)
Kodak D-76 Developer (i want to try Rodinal)
Atlas Fixer (i want to try koda-fix)
a LOT of plastic bottles for measuring (120mL, 240mL, 500mL, 1L)
thermometer
one big plastic container for the ice
accordion container
funnel
tube ice
soap
timer

i dont use a changing bag for reeling, i just step into my banio and turn off the lights and do it in the dark.

its actually a very fun process. but tedious (i tend to be makalat kasi eh) and lots of waiting.
waiting for temps, waiting for agitation, waiting for wash, waiting for fixing, waiting for scanning etc. but yeah, its pretty fun. i love doin it.

Hello Ari,

I'm very interested in this event. Could I join? I can bring some left-over D76's from my failed darkroom experiments (I wasted 1day shoot and 3 rolls due to very poor technique). :(

TIA.

Call me an idiot for asking.. http://www.kodak.com/global/en/professional/products/films/bw/tMax400.jhtml Can you develop this new TMAX 400 using C41 or do I have to send it to a special place for developing? I'm so excited to use this new film and I don't want to muck it up sending it to the wrong place (neighborhood labs).

Tmax isnt all that new. its been around. although, the did say that they "reformulated" it and its supposedly sharper than ever.

i wouldnt know, all my tmax rolls are the ones before they became "reformulated"

dave, what other black and whites can you get in singapore? if you aren't really into push/pull processing, try the c-41 films. but then again, the true black and white films are still much much different

Donna -

i think there was someone asking me to hold a processing session too. im down for it. but the problem is when?

lets coordinate asap! pm me on what you want to happen.

id like it sana if we have a morning muna, then develop by lunch time.
after that, shoot again, then develop by dinner time.

that way, you get to do it twice and you learn na right away

lets make a list on who wants to go? im going to a small baseball game tomorrow here in alabang country club. i'll be shooting black and white as well on my other slr. i think ill be processing in the afternoon. let me know if you guys want in

this room is inside a bodega beside my motorpool and scrapyard. used to be a room where i store parts for my heavy equipments. we're restoring a d60p komastsu bulldozer right beside this darkroom.

i invite anybody interested in learning how to process and print the old school way. i'm no pro and i'm still learning but i did some basic b&w darkroom lessons abroad which i can share with you guys. PM me if you're interested.

ohh sorry about that. it's just that girls have a peculiar way of arranging stuff and rooms. you should see the darkroom that i grew up in. i actually meant to say that it's pretty tidy and neat :)

congratulations on finally setting up your darkroom. a lot of people here have meaning to set up their own but couldn't really get to doing it :)

i LOVE your darkroom setup. :) i think what otep meant with "girl" written all over it is because it's so clean and well arranged and OC (i think mine would end up looking like yours) unlike if a man did a same darkroom setup everything will probably be all over the place...hehehe no offense guys :D:D

maybe you , joseph and i can coordinate with this black and white developing stint ... i know marton is interested too. so that makes two of us lol.

if we are just developing and not printing, we can pretty much do it anywhere i guess. hassle lang for me is my film scanner isnt compact at all! :(

We do b&w photography + developing in UP FA in our second year and it's really easy! There's a photog workshop every summer at FA that tackles just that plus more, I believe. ^^ But then, you're from Makati, so it might be a hassle for you. ):

I have no idea where there are darkrooms that are "rented out", though. >_<

Photo paper costs a lot, too. A box is nearly P1,000. Man. /dies

Oh well, I don't think I was of much help to you. x_x Good luck, though!
