View Full Version : Petri 7 reunited with Canonet Junior
Jo Avila 02-24-2008, 06:23 PM My dad called me up the other day asking about his old Canonet Junior. The Canonet Junior was his old date camera when he was courting my mom. I remember asking that camera from him as a birthday gift when I was still 7-10 years old.
My dad told me that the Canonet Junior was a gift from one of his friends.
It seems that when my Dad's friend purchased the Canonet Junior he also purchased a Petri 7.
My dad's friend recently rediscovered the Petri 7 as they were renovating his house. He called up my Dad to ask about the Canonet Junior. My dad called me up and I called up his friend - and that's the basic gist of how I now have a Petri 7 in front of me :D

The lens has a few scratches. But everything still seems to be working.
I have to restock on 35mm soon for my Smena 8M. I"ll buy an extra roll or two to use with the Petri 7 :D
Cheers!

delfinotiongco 02-25-2008, 03:32 AM Thanks for the Petri 7 photo :). This was camera I started learning photography. I still have the negatives from it.
lilyagito 02-25-2008, 09:56 AM Hi! I also found a Petri camera somewhere in my house. I tried bringing it to Hidalgo to have it fixed but no one there wanted to look at it. Would you know of a shop that can make repairs on the Petri? I would really want the chance to use it. Thanks!

Marton_Benitez 02-27-2008, 10:49 PM Cool! :) My dad's old date camera was his minox, i guess he felt like a secret agent man with it.

16mm? Slice 35mm film into half, lengthwise of course.
karlosamson 02-28-2008, 10:59 AM Dang I wonder if I can find my dad's old Minox? I think I will buy a roll or two of 35mm today. Been putting off giving the Canonet Junior a shakedown.
Jo, does yours still meter?

karlosamson 02-28-2008, 11:54 AM Must really have a closer look then. I don't remember finding a battery hatch.
Jo Avila 02-28-2008, 12:10 PM @ Karlo
Hold it. Are you asking if my Petri 7 or Canonet Junior still meters? Both cameras have a prism that goes around the front of the lens. The prism gathers the light to help power the selenium cells of the camera. The prism on the Petri is also its light meter :D
Cheers!

karlosamson 02-28-2008, 12:19 PM @ Jo
This is cool I am learning a lot. I knew that the transparent ring around the lens housed the selenium cells but I didn't know they were powered by light. Always thought they had a battery of some sort. Now I am not sure whether my Canonet's selenium cells are still viable. How do I test that?
Thanks!
Jo Avila 02-28-2008, 12:21 PM @ Karlo
They were never really that accurate to begin with :D Check out the lightmeter when you point it towards a light source. It's a bit of a lost cause if you don't see the meter move. I will check my Canonet Junior at the studio and double check a few things.
Cheers!

karlosamson 02-28-2008, 12:32 PM Uh oh. I can't even see the meter. The viewfinder is all cobwebby hahahahahaha! Will take it off the shelf tonight and try to figure it out. I've never seen this camera actually being used so no idea if it was in working order to begin with. I just dug it out of an old baul.
karlosamson 02-29-2008, 12:00 PM It's dead, Jim. I mean, Jo. I wonder what speed this is now locked at? Maybe I can do a modified Sunny 16 based on the now default mystery speed.
Jo Avila 02-29-2008, 12:26 PM I'll check out my Canonet Junior tomorrow. I'll see if I can help you figure it out :D
Cheers!

karlosamson 02-29-2008, 12:34 PM Woot! Thanks man, you rock! Meanwhile, I will load it up with a test roll and try shooting.
I also dug up an Agfa Optima Rapid 500V which uses Agfa's obsolete Rapid cartridge system. Know anything about this? Will see if I can jury rig it to accept regular 35mm. Will post a pic of that soon.
Jo Avila 02-29-2008, 12:38 PM @ Karlo
I'm pretty sure Jay Javier would have the info you seek regarding Agfa's rapid cartridge system.
Send him a PM :D
Cheers!

David Tong 05-05-2008, 07:56 AM Have you guys tried the Petri 35 Color? I'm kinda eyeing this coz it's a lot smaller than the 7... any feedback?
Jo Avila 05-05-2008, 04:43 PM Wow! I just googled it.
That's a gorgeous looking camera :D
Cheers!
Jo Avila
David Tong 05-05-2008, 04:54 PM It is a cute one... the fact that it's even smaller than my Konica is very appealing to me.
