View Full Version : Multiplicity in Photoshop
sandro_mendoza 10-15-2006, 02:36 AM I just resurrected this thread as I cannot find the original post on this. It might have been one of those threads which has not been salvaged from the recent onslaught of hackers.
Anyways, here's my own try on multiplicity photo:

Nick_Espino 10-15-2006, 03:00 AM Bro, what happened to your arm?
sandro_mendoza 10-15-2006, 03:25 AM arm fracture from quad bike accident. been on sick leave for two weeks now, so nothing to do but browse the net and sometimes do things like this with my cam to fight boredom, inspite of having to use just my left hand and i'm right-handed.
Earl Gonzalez 10-15-2006, 07:40 AM Ang lufet ni Sandro! :) WOW! Dejavu... uuuuuuuyyy si Tiger...
... Sorry about your arm Bro.! But don't let it get you down.

i learned this technique from the original thread here in DPP where some members posted their own version of this multiplicity photo. unfortunately, it seems that thread is gone, aftermath of hackers attack.
did this by taking shots of each pose individually on the same scene/setup with the camera mounted on a tripod and both focusing and exposure set manually. then used the remote to take photos of myself leisurely. in photoshop, i pasted each photos in individual layers. then chose my main photo then put it on top of the next photo i like to merge. i then turned off the visibilty of the other/succeeding photos/layers. i decreased the opacity of the main photo, then erased the part where my image on the photo underneath appears to show the exact profile (including the shadow). turned back the opacity of the main photo to 100% then merged visible. did the same process on the succeeding layers/photos one by one til i got them all in one frame. voila! there's five of me...parang gremlins na nabuhusan ng tubig!
Darryl Ong 10-17-2006, 06:29 AM yup ako din gusto din gawin yan hehehe,,, do u know a website na ok?:D tnx
Darryl Ong 10-17-2006, 06:31 AM ei sorry didnt see the last post,, the one before my post i mean,, tnx for the info
Tantin Tolledo 10-17-2006, 07:05 AM he he he, naunahan akong mag post. I have an on-going project of this kind and I hope you guys can help.
Think of it as Matrix-style.
I already have a photo of a rarely visited part of a park (with a couple of people in it). And then, I will replace the all the people with several "me's" in black suit and shades. I hope the tripod markers are still there (golf pegs).
Natatakot lang kasi akong gawin itong mag isa kasi
1. mukha akong gago if ever.
2. habang naka pose ako, eh may umagaw ng camera ko.
Here's a multiplicity pic from way back in 2001, I was still using a diskette based Mavica then.

ann_francisco 10-17-2006, 01:31 PM tried to do it.. nakakaaliw... :) (i won't post the product tho.. it's too vain.. hehehe:Grin: )
i think the most simple way of doing it is shooting with a tripod, as you take photos, you let your subject move, but your camera not moving (no changes in lighting, set, objects, etc. as well). after that, just open everything in photoshop and drag all the pics in one file, creating layers (whose number depends on the shots you took) and then just use the eraser tool to erase the parts covering the subject per layer...
i guess that's it...:)
(sorry baka malabo the way i explained it... )
jay jallorina 10-17-2006, 01:47 PM here's a very simple play on the topic...

denmark dolores 02-20-2008, 11:09 AM Hi to all Photoshop Gurus out there...
Can anyone lead me to a reference website or reply with a step by step (as in, super noob step by step with matching explanation :D) instructions on how to do the multiplicity trick on Photoshop?
I already know the concept with regard to taking the shots but the perfect PP is still out in the woods for me.
I've tried following some that I saw on the web but they're quite not that helpful for noobs like me. The most challenging would be images that are overlapping.
So, if some of you there are so kind enough to share their tips, it would be greatly appreciated.
I'm using CS3 btw.
Thanks a bunch!!!
Sherwin Andal 02-20-2008, 01:32 PM I remember Adobe sent a newsletter that includes that topic. You may logon to Adobe website and search. You may need to register your product first. :)
denmark dolores 02-20-2008, 01:35 PM @sherwin
Thanks!
But I hope there's still some other options. :D

Yes Tantin... Please post some tips! :)
LeandroLosaria 02-20-2008, 03:03 PM 1. mount your camera on a tripod and pre-focus
2. hit timer and let the subjects pose (and another, and another... )
3. in photoshop use one of the images as the base image
4. put on a layer on top of the base layer and mask it and paint only the area where the subject(s) are there (repeat for succeeding layers)
jasonmiraples 02-20-2008, 03:07 PM Thanks Leandro!
reyabella 02-20-2008, 03:10 PM So the post with yellow cars was shot several times (as many as there are yellow cars on the picture)? Tantin must have a lot of patience doing this. Or is there a faster way to do it?
LeandroLosaria 02-20-2008, 03:13 PM @sir rey
i cant see all the images in this thread, it is blocked by our comapny's websense, but i can see greg's posts and you can do that with the steps i posted above.
when i get home i will then be able to see tantin's pic, or unless tantin will explain it himself on how he did it :D
Tantin Tolledo 02-20-2008, 03:20 PM Nope, i didnt shoot that. Its just a sample i saw in another forum.
I started one before (A Mr. Smith / Matrix kind of photo theme) but i never finished it. Shot a photo of a scene in a park, then I wanted to replace each and everyone in the pic with me wearing tux and shades for the other photo.

Wow that's a nice concept I think. Will wait for the shots Tantin. :)
denmark dolores 02-20-2008, 03:32 PM Will definitely wait for your tips on how to do it! Thanks peeps! :)
LeyCastillo 02-20-2008, 03:35 PM i agree with sir leandro, better use masking rather than the traditional lasso tools. try to use several brushes, try the caligraphic brushes for hard to reach edges and corners.
and for your concern about overlapping.. plan ahead. take note of your first position so your second, third and so on will not overlap each other.:)
here's a sample of multiplicity, taken sometime last year.

eugene_bacosa 02-20-2008, 07:31 PM Some questions:
- Do you use only one exposure setting for all the photos (set manually)?
- How do you pre-focus if you're going to be the subject as well?
- Do you focus on each subject's location? If not, what's the ideal aperture so that "everyone" is fairly focused/sharp?
Tnx!
LeandroLosaria 02-20-2008, 07:52 PM - Do you use only one exposure setting for all the photos (set manually)?
ideally yes, to have a consistency between the images.
- How do you pre-focus if you're going to be the subject as well?
i dunno how others do their "multiplicity" images, but i use a small aperture (f8 or smaller), then focus 1/3 of the way (or focus at the lens' hyperfocal pt at that focal lenth and aperture) then set the lens to MF so the lens is now pre-focused at the same pt on all images.
- Do you focus on each subject's location? If not, what's the ideal aperture so that "everyone" is fairly focused/sharp?
no, i only focus at one point then use a small aperture (f8 or smaller).
andrewaseneta 02-20-2008, 09:17 PM wow thanks for sharing Leandro, I have been a fan of this effect but I don't know how to start! :)

back to thread, here's my share which was taken in 2005
http://www.jeffvergara.com/imagevault/2005/200705_multiplicity.jpg
i used multiple shots, manual settings and focus, and mounted on a tripod. i layer-stacked each shot on photoshop then erased the unwanted areas thru layer masking.
denmark dolores 03-05-2008, 02:19 PM multiple exposure with special lens? or multiple shot and edited in photoshop?
Hi Diwa,
For multiplicity images -- Camera's fixed onto a tripod. Fixed focus and then fire multiple shots with different positions for the subject, then do Masking on PS. :)

Aly_Reyes 03-07-2008, 07:59 PM Here's one in Duplicity. I took two shots of my son in front of a mirror without a tripod hence the slight blur.

JosephGarcia 03-07-2008, 09:09 PM Took these just last Sunday, 2nd of March, when we went fishing.
These shots were handheld in burst mode with the intention of getting a good shot of my son while he was walking towards me after getting "Pillows" when he got hungry.
Couldn't choose from any, so I just did this:

I was wondering when someone with comment on the 'multiple exposure'. Found the workflow in Scott Kelby's CS3 Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers. File>Automate>Photomerge then select the photos you want merged and they snap into place. Erase the portion where the other Billy is and voila, I have twins!

Thanks!
Actually, there was no reflection. The current reflection on the table is really a reflection, no manipulation. If you look at the reflection of the bottom of the can, its almost at the end of the table. My arm was above the can so there is no more table for my arm to reflect off of.

RameloGusilatar 04-13-2008, 11:32 PM This surely will help! TFS :)
1. mount your camera on a tripod and pre-focus
2. hit timer and let the subjects pose (and another, and another... )
3. in photoshop use one of the images as the base image
4. put on a layer on top of the base layer and mask it and paint only the area where the subject(s) are there (repeat for succeeding layers)

this is so cool! how can i do this? some tips?:)
im no expert but this is what i can share.
Use a tripod to make sure your camera is in one place. (this will make it easier in the PP stage).
shoot in manual mode so ur settings will be the same for all exposures
if you're doing it alone, set ur camera to self timer or if you have ur remote it's even easier.
pose away..make your poses interestingthat's the easy part. this is where it gets a little tricky:Grin:
download your pics to your PC. if your shooting in RAW,convert your series of photos to jpeg. (this is just how i do it)
then chose one photo to be ur base layer. this is were you will put in all your clones.
open another photo, then duplicate (CTRl+J) so that if anything went wrong you can just delete the layer and duplicate it again.
i know there are a lot of other ways to do this but i find using layer mask the easiest for me. Click on the layer mask icon then a white box will appear on your active layer. click inside the box.http://lh4.ggpht.com/_0F1_FRTsqb4/SfYwbhGL5QI/AAAAAAAAADU/QpHutBMaKlc/step%201.jpg
Then click on the brush tool or press B. with layer mask, anything BLACK is invisible and vice versa for WHITE. so using the brush tool having BLack as the color, paint on everything that you don't need. If accidentally you paint on something that you need just change ur brush color to white and paint over it .
after that, click and drag that to the base layer. it will automatically fit esp when you're sure that your camera didn't move.
then do the same with the rest of your photos.I hope this helps.
nys.labrador 04-29-2009, 03:51 AM thanks so much shamoi! :) i'll try this and then post it here once i get it right! goodluck to me! ;)

Hi Rye..sorry got too caught up with work. what do you mean overlap?
...Choose which one you would want then mask out the other, yes like you said it takes patience...but once you get the hang of it...you'll get addicted...
...if you want you can try the pano style then stitch...
how?
again use a tripod and shoot in manual
shoot like how you shoot panos but with you in it...
pose click pan...pose click pan....hehehe
then stitch...

Hahaha, next time i'll include the callers na. Thank you sir!
@rye, thanks a lot too sir. Took me a lot of time figuring out photoshop before. For now, you could try keeping your subjects separate from each other which will make editing easier. +Also, the erase tool seems to be less complicated to use in patching the layers together.

iankevinangeles 02-08-2010, 05:37 PM Isn't there an existing thread already??
iankevinangeles 02-08-2010, 05:44 PM Hi guys, there's an existing thread already and it is properly placed(no offense to the TS) in the Digital Fine Art's sub-part of the forum. There's more posts here, but still it's better if we just continue the thread there since it's more properly placed.
Here's the link: http://digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=1640

sir just my two cents, I think it is more applicable that it is placed here in photoshop sub-forum. as per this is samples of photo manipulation using photoshop. I think mods should merged the previous one (the one you quoted) with this one...
cheers!
iankevinangeles 02-08-2010, 08:48 PM Yeah, it's better if this will be merged with the other thread. So that we won't visit 2 threads anymore. :D
Cheers! :)
