View Full Version : Photography Sites/ Subjects
ian_toledo 09-19-2006, 04:57 PM Hi Folks,
I'm quite new in the world of photography and I would like to improve my skills. I've been doing a lot of practice shoots and have already ran out of areas/ subjects to take pictures of in our house and areas near my office. I just like to get your inputs on places/ subjects that are within the makati area that will be a good venue for practice shoots. I'm quite busy with my job so an out-of-town gig might not be a good idea at this point in time.
Would appreciate suggestions.
Thanks
Ian
Raffy Crucillo 09-19-2006, 05:41 PM Since you're in the Makati area, you might need a permit to shoot around the city.
czar_lopez 09-19-2006, 05:55 PM sir raf, what about the local and foreign tourists? Do they have to get a permit too?
Raffy Crucillo 09-19-2006, 06:22 PM Hi, Czar.

as a makati denizen for the longest time and a photography nut to the core, i have never allowed that "no permit" thing to dampen my creative drive... (naks)...
since i couldnt do urban scapes in makati CBD...i sort of forced myself to gain confidence in shooting street. the vendors along the peripheral roads are fantastic subjects. sir, try pasong tamo and the corners of edsa and pasay road or pasong tamo. i also try and wait at the old PNR rail station for train commuters and people. very animated especially in the late afternoon. of course i cant list everything down....your creativity must also extend to finding subjects for you to explore... (just remember, you and your gear's safety first).
urbanscapes...particularly night photography is still my first interest. and if you check the night photography album in my multiply site, you could see i shoot around known makati landmarks...guadalupe bridge, various overpasses, i even shot from the 34rth floor condo unit of an ambassador who invited me for dinner (talk about access pass). you have just got to explore and learn how to venture into the world while keeping yourself safe and sane. if you really want to do photography and distinguish yourself from others...you have to find the subjects...you have to go and explore new locations...dont expect them to wait outside your door....that's my big tip for you! the exploration and the travel around the city will amuse you as much as the photography itself. i sure had fun knowing and chatting with the vendors outside makati cinema square. those solitary nights shooting long exposure at the breakwaters of mall of asia - at midnight - are unforgettable as much as the photos themselves. photographers must be explorers of their environs! it is our task to show a new angle on familiar things, stuff we normally ignore...
im going to shoot in magallanes interchange soon. and then spend an entire night (maybe on the next full moon) shooting around the still barren lands of fort bonifacio.... see, makati will never run out of shooting opportunities.
now, go out and practice sir! :)

not naman around the whole city. sa MACEA area lang, which is composed of legaspi and salcedo villages. you cannot shoot architecture, but you can shoot people, vendors (if one has the guts to aim his camera at a stranger). i was shooting myself in gamboa park, trying out nice self-portraits, and although an SG was intently observing me from a distance, he just allowed me to indulge in my photographic narcissism. just dont shoot them tall buildings!
ayala malls and the environs are also tight on the lenses. but i did try shooting buildings from the top floor of a parking building....nice vantage point. unfortunately, my photos were crap.
but along suburban makati...therein lie a wealth of opportunities for the intrepid lensman to explore! goodluck!
Tok Paler 09-19-2006, 11:53 PM Great photos Jay! =) or should i say Asteeg!graphs? =b
Now, a shoot around the city at night may not be a bad idea =b watcha think? =)

I second this... Thanks Jay.
I'm a Marikina boy, things are simpler here... So basically it pays to know the local ordinances and stuff there at Urban Makati... It's such a complicated place for me... :D
ian_toledo 09-20-2006, 12:59 PM Thanks for the inputs Jay
