Hello,

I'm new to this hobby.. well, hindi pa pala new kasi wala pa akong camera  I'm planning to buy one soon and leaning towards the D70/D70s. Just want to ask saan ok bumili and saan mura.

Went to quiapo/hidalgo this weekend to canvass but was not sure who amongst them are trustworthy (for the lack of a better term). By trustworthy, I mean, the supplier/reseller sells authentic Nikon products (by the way, are there fakes?? lahat na ata kasi ngayon may fake) including the necessary warranty, etc.

I've browsed in the Canon forum and read that there's a blacklisted shop. Not sure if this is true for Nikon so I wanted to be sure.

Not sure if I posted in the right forum. In not, Mods, please transfer as appropriate.

Thanks thanks!!

This may help you in making your purchase decision.

Thanks guys! appreciate the feedback.

Question pala, I'm choosing between D50 and D70s but as I've mentioned leaning towards D70s, if I buy a D50 now are there features in the D70s that I will eventually look for? Of course sa ngayon hindi ko pa sya mapapansin but granting I learn and take this seriously (which I will do), would I itch for the features that the D70s have? Or based your experiences, can do without talaga sya and nothing to lose if I go with D50?

I've done a lot of reading as far as the 2 are concerned pero cant relate much yet. I'm hoping you guys could help kasi syempre nothing beats experience which you guys have :)

Salamat ng marami!!

I'd choose the D70s primarily for its size... my hands won't get cramped and it won't looked cramped when I'm holding the camera with two hands.

D70s is 3 frames per sec vs. D50's 2.5.

Other than those, I think they're the same... ;-)

So, if you're okay with a smaller body, go for the D50... if not, D70s!

One other major difference is the number of command dials. The D50 only has one whereas the D70s has 2. This makes it easier to change the aperture and shutter speed.

The D50 beats the D70s, D200, and even the D2x in high ISO performance though.

Hope this helps.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond50/page26.asp ---- may be this review link would help you. or confuse u more hehehe... its leaning towards d50

i have a d50. bought it last april. same as u, as was choosing between d50 and d70s. i chose d50 primarily because its the newer model. it may have less functions, but the technology used for its functions (not all though) are newer. and since i am fairly a beginner with photography, the d50 functions would suffice. still holds true.

cheers!

Yup for most users the D50 will be more than enough. :) The only major complaints i would have against it is that it does not have a DOF preview button and its built in flash cannot function as a commander (unlike the D70 and the D200, and more recently the D80).

But realistically if you're looking for your first DSLR go for the D50 and a good lens (18-200 VR hehehe). A lens would last much longer in terms of usefulness than a body.

Go for D70s, it has DOF preview, wider LCD, capable of having MC-DC1 (cable release)-ok siya for night photography or when you want to set your shutter to bulb, 2 command dials, and 3fps. I am not sure kung may bnew pa na D70 pero D70s marami pa. Pero kung tight budget mo, you can go for D50. Had this model for 3 months and ok siya.

Try with Henry's camera din, minsan mas mura sila kay mayer. SB800 is 17500 lang sa kanila, D200 is 75k.. :D

Hi Angelo, D50 is a good start, but mind you it does not have an LCD lamp when you need it to read your aperture and speed in the dark. For sure you will be shooting longer exposure sooner or later. !!!(what the heck) Bring a pen light.

Salamat inyo! laking tulong sobra :)

eto pa pala, this might be of help.. i'm leaning towards sports photography. Sports enthusiasts kasi ako so why not mix the 2 hobbies di ba? :)

also, magkano ba yung 18-200VR lens? lagi ko syang nababasa. Ok kaya kung D50 body tapos ito yung lens? How much would that cost (total)?

Hi Angelo...

The 18-200VR lens is a nice lens... expect to spend 44K.. but that is already on sale.. I saw the post on another site. 44K lang naman eh... hehehehe! mas mahal pa sa D50! If I weren't a beginner yet, this would be the lens to get... but it does come at that price lang... usually retails much more than that. Good luck!

Another note... since you plan to do sports photography, you're better off with the D70s... because 3fps sya versus the 2.5 of the D50... and mas maganda ang kit lens ny D70s.

Also, if you're going to shoot indoor sports, you're going to need a lens with a big aperture.

Raffy is right. You won't be able to capture clean action shots with the 18-200 VR. VR only allows you to shoot at lower shutter speeds but that is not what you need for indoor sports. You need fast glass(at least f/2.8) and and AFS.

By the way, I salute the sport shooters we have out there. Even with my fast lenses and D200, I typically get only a very few number of keepers( > 5%) when trying to shoot my daughter ice skating. I guess kelangan pa ng maraming praktis. :)

Your best bet is dealing with the new distributor, Columbia Digital, and ask them a list of their authorized dealers. Many shops sell grey market products and if something were to go wrong with your camera, you may find yourself with warranty issues.

if budget is tight. you can get away with using a 50 1.8. i still find myself using this lens a lot esp if the event is at CHK in UP where lighting is horrible. :)

By the way, I've been comparing D50 and D70s further and have additional questions...

1. sensitivity steps. 1 EV steps(D50) vs. 1/3 EV steps (D70s). Would I need the 1/3 steps? Or can I live without it and 1 steps would be enough? Without the 1/3 steps, is flexibility compromised to a great extent? Like I would not be able to achieve certain shots or hindi naman?

2. max shutter speed. 1/4000 vs 1/8000. I dont need the 1/8000 speed right?

Pasensya na madaming tanong pero sobrang salamat talaga sa inyo.. napapadali ang pagpili ko :)

I prefer a camera that allows EV steps to be adjusted by 1/3 stops - that being said, I shoot at ISO 100, 200, or 400 most of the time. Minsan ISO 500. But I definitely need the 1/3 EV adjustment sa aperture and shutter speed, does the D50 let you do that? If yes, then having the 1-stop EV adjustments for ISO sensitivity shouldn't really matter 99% of the time.

You won't miss the 1/8000 speed. If your kind of shooting requires it, you're probably earning a living off it and you're better off with a higher-end model.
