View Full Version : What SD card/s do you use for your D50?
carlo_mendoza 09-18-2006, 08:04 AM Good Day Fellow Nikonians:
I am a newbie with a Nikon D50. I just would like to share my experience with my 1-week old 1GB Transcend SD card. When I got my camera, I was excited to use it immediately slot in the SD card. It went well for a couple of days. But last thursday, as I was browsing the photos on my camera, some files were tagged as "File does not contain image data" adn when I tried deleting the photos, The monitor displayed "Card may not be used". With this, I tried reformatting the SD card using the camera. But sad to say, it happened again last Saturday night.
Im using Transcend brand SD card.
Anyone who has had experiences/difficulties with memory cards?
Thanks so much :)
Raffy Crucillo 09-18-2006, 08:22 AM ...Transcend is a good brand. I had one for my D50 before (I lost it). Then I used PQI. Can you still return it / have it replaced?
carlo_mendoza 09-18-2006, 08:26 AM Thanks raffy:
Did you also use Transcend on your D50? I already had it replaced. And I've decided to sell it, and get an approved SD card - Panasonic, SanDisk and Panasonic. Just afraid of bringing damage to the camera :)
Thanks :)

I did. I lost the Transcend SD Card somewhere in the house. I got the PQI later, no problems naman. That's a good move (to get an approved SD Card). :)
carlo_mendoza 09-18-2006, 09:02 AM With the problem I stated above, you think it's really the SD card having problems? Hope its not the camera :(
Actually, those approved brands are somewhat hard to find...

I really hope not.
If it manifests the same problem, then you can say that it's the camera and have it replaced / repaired. Like I said, I hope not... I'd feel miserable if this was the case.
carlo_mendoza 09-18-2006, 09:27 AM Yes, I would say it is the camera if the problem recurs with an approved SD card...
karlo_inigo_lucas 09-18-2006, 10:42 AM i did use Transcend on my D50 before...didn't experience any problems with the card. i also use the same brand for my phone and pda - worked great! :)
carlo_mendoza 09-18-2006, 10:50 AM Thanks Karlo :)
I am even scared to use non-approved SD cards on the D50.
Any thoughts on this? :)
Brent_Co 09-18-2006, 11:49 AM @Carlo
Maybe you just got a bad copy.
I'm using a 2GB transcend SD on my Nikon P2, so far, so good.
alex_paulino 09-18-2006, 12:12 PM I have a D50 and the SD card I first used was a 1GB Sandisk card and later I bought 2 pcs of Kingston 1 GB SD cards. One of the guys I work with ordered 2 pcs of Kingston 2 GB SD cards for me. So far I don't have any problems with any of them. Lexar would be nice but it would cost more than Sandisk, while Kingston is a few dollars cheaper than Sandisk. On the D50 Manual, Kingston was not mentioned as an approved brand for SD cards to use but I find it ok so far. I'm planning to buy the Ultra III of Sandisk next time, most probably next year. I can give the other SD cards to my son who needs it for his Minolta Z1.
alex_paulino 09-18-2006, 12:17 PM :) By the way Carlo, I read in one of the D50 forums of Yahoo Groups that somebody bought what they call an "el cheapo" card and the results were depressing. I would rather put my money on a good well known brand than lose all the pictures I would be taking with my D50 which I won't be able to replace anymore.
carlo_mendoza 09-18-2006, 12:25 PM Thanks guys.
Now I am torn on what to do:
1. Sell my Transcend 1GB and get an approved SD card
2. Settle with my Transcend SD card
Need your inputs :)
Vince Sanga 09-18-2006, 12:37 PM I use Transcend brand too, no problems so far.
karlo_inigo_lucas 09-18-2006, 02:45 PM @ carlo
honestly, as long as it says the unit accepts SD, i use any good branded SD card. i really don't look at the approved brands - it's just all there for marketing! IMHO :D
i'm currenty using a 2Gig Ridata 150x for my D200, it works great - and it's not under the approved brands...
as long as the unit accepts/specifies that type of medium - use that storage medium...
DoN SeViLLa 09-18-2006, 04:56 PM i'm using promaster for 6 months now so far no problems encountered. i also have a sandisk for week now so far so good.
carlo_mendoza 09-18-2006, 04:58 PM @ Don:
What brand is promaster?
Actually, the approved brands (Toshiba, Sandisk and Panasonic) are hard to find.
Thanks to all who replied :)
Raffy Crucillo 09-18-2006, 05:00 PM Carlo,
By the way... I even used a MMC card on my D50... I didn't encounter a problem with it either.

promaster yung brand. seems like a generic sd
Louieescobar 09-25-2006, 10:26 AM Mga Sir,
Tanung lang po kung magkano estimated price ng 1GB SD Card 60x(speed) na generic.
Maraming salamat po mga bossing.
Jun_Tengco 09-25-2006, 11:27 AM I'm using a transcend 512mb SD card for 6 mos. na. (for my D50). So far, no problem .
eds_magsayo 09-25-2006, 08:46 PM im using Ridata 512MB and a Kingston 512MB sd cards. no problems encountered.
Glenn Michael Tan 09-25-2006, 10:11 PM i'm using kingston 1gb since may 2006, no problems so far, around 4000 shots
Carlo Leonardia 09-26-2006, 01:22 PM Use a Sandisk ultra II 1GB and a Kingston 512MB. No probs with both.
I do notice a speed difference between the two when previewing pics on the LCD of the camera (syempre the Sandisk is faster). However, when it comes to continuous shooting, I haven't really seen any diff between the two. Maybe its because I usually use single shot mode. :D
pio sugay 09-26-2006, 02:45 PM with my D50, i use the regular sandisk and a 150X ridata, both 512mb only since i rarely shoot RAW.
a few weeks back, i had a shoot in pampangga, i forgot to take my ridata out of my shirt pocket. after my shirt was washed and dried, the card fell off the pocket. i tested it, it was still working and all of my pics were intact. :)
carlo_mendoza 09-27-2006, 09:46 AM Thanks for the replies.

magkano kaya yun? at anong brand yung bibilin nyo? hindi ba nakakatakot bumili ng generic baka masira ang camera?
Aris Guerrero 12-12-2006, 04:09 PM 2gb transcend or pqi or ridata. di naman siguro masisira yung camera.
sabi ni glenn/carlo (i can't remember which one of them bought recently, ulyanin kasi) - around P1,400.00 for a 2gb.

AndrewTungBorlongan 12-12-2006, 07:06 PM i got the same error mentioned with my 1gb Nikon SD around last week.
i reformatted it, and it seems to be ok.

Aris Guerrero 12-12-2006, 07:34 PM nye! i thought you said 2gb. hehehehe
well then, cdrking would be the best buy pala. 1gb sd card for only PhP880.00
