Hi Armand.....long time NO hear from you! Whats up? On your first post I noticed your son has small bruise on the left side of his nose! Nice use of available light! Can I also post my sons portrait here? I dont want to make other thread. C U around soon!:)
luiscruz 02-02-2008, 08:24 PM A 100% crop of the full size images may (or may not) prove me wrong, but you've got pretty steady hands. The first 2 images look pretty sharp. The 3rd shows significant blur, but whaddya expect from a 1/8s exposure at 44mm?
Anyway, I like the first shot best. His smile seems a bit awkward, but I think it adds to the charm of the whole image. I think I might have tried to move a bit closer, but that's just my opinion. I think it's a nice portrait though.
As for the other two, the way you cropped the top of his head off really bugs me. The pillows in the background are also distracting.
One thing I would like to suggest is that you get down to his eye level. There's something about the first shot that made the elevated camera position work, but whatever it is, it isn't there in the other two.
As for other suggestions - go out and get into better light. That way you can drop your ISO, increase your shutter speed, and get a nicer backdrop.
On another note, a quick peek at your Flickr tells me you're definitely not a novice. For some reason though, the shots you posted here gave me that impression. I mean no offense, but these images feel like impulsive snapshots.

Thanks doc for visiting. Been busy kaya medyo ngayon lng post. Yes, those bruise are mosquito bites that he keeps on scratching, I thought of removing it but decided to leave it for memories purposes na rin.
Yes, you can also post your son's portrait here. I made the title general naman.

I admit that these are all impulsive snapshot. I can't direct my 2-yr old son to post. He keeps on moving, running and covering his face. The reason I find it hard to frame those shot, It's like I'm shooting sports action. they are not cropped actually. I shot in burst chasing him. :D
About the steady hands, hmmm... then I can say that the OS of sigma is working perfectly. I also leave the images untouched as part of my testing of my new lens.
Thank you so much sir for the critiques. Notes taken. :) I'll try to bring my son in the beach this morning and will try what I've learned here. (I'm hoping that my son will cooperate):)

That explains why these shots weren't as well composed as your Flickr images. In that case, maybe zooming out or stepping back will give you just a little bit more room so you can crop the image the way you want it later.

Bilib na sana ako... lente lang pala (translation: I would've been impressed, but now I know it's the lens) :)
