When I checked 2 weeks ago, it was 19+++ at Avenue, but IMHO the 85 1.8 is a better performer overall it can be had for about the same price.

Hi to all nikonians,
Just want to ask how much is the price of a brand new Nikon 18-200VR DX lens in Pinas, particularly in Hidalgo. Here in Dubai, the lowest I found so far is UAED3,500 or around P47,500.

have no choice but to buy it here. i'll just consider the extra P3,500 as shipping cost and payment for its availability here. early next year pa kasi ako makauwi ng Pinas.

I just bought the Nikon 18-200VR DX lens for my D70. Fortunately the Indian salesman gave me further discount on the price (around P47,500) he told me earlier over the phone. When I was already there at the shop, I tested the lens on my camera then bargained on it for UAED3,200 (around P43,500). After consulting the store manager the salesman agreed and I finally got the lens. Maybe it helped that I'm already a "suki" of that salesman. Likewise many members of "Lightform" (a Filipino Photographer's organization here to which I am also a member) buy most of their own gear at that store. The lens is actually selling for UAED3,800 (P50K) in Grandstore, the official Nikon dealer here in Dubai.
I have been testing the VR function of the lens, and I'm happy and satisfied so far with the outputs.

here ya go taken from ken rockwell's site

Here are all the versions of 80-200mm f/2.8 Nikon has made. For the sake of brevity unless otherwise noted all are ED, f/22 minimum, push-pull zoom, 5' (1.5m) minimum focus, no tripod collar, a one-position focus limit switch, slow autofocus speed and 77mm filter size:

2.) 1988-1992: AF, 16/11 elements,1,280g, 176mm long, f/32 minimum, 3 position focus limiter

3.) 1993-1997: AF-D,16/11 elements, 1,300g, 187mm long

4.) 1997-present: AF-D, 16/11 elements, 1,300g 188mm, two-ring, tripod collar, $920 US new, fast autofocus.

Hi Sonny, sorry to but in. Just wanted to comment on the 80-200 AFD. I've had one for about a year and it works great for my purposes. I shoot sports with it on a D70 and it works like a charm. Some say it's slow focusing. It would be slow compared to the AF-S or the 70-200 VR. This is not to say though that it's very slow. It's just not as fast. What sort of shooting are considering it for?

nap_alcedo
09-25-2006, 12:02 PM
I have the 80-200 f2.8 AFD and it is fast focusing. In fact, I have yet to experience the "focus-hunting" that I used to experience with the Sigma 70-300 APO.

in that case you shouldn't have a problem with the 80-200 afd. i have the same one as nap. i've used it for anything from reunions to uaap basketball. no complaints whatsoever.

@ sonny

i have the 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D version.

just like what the others said... havent experience any focus-hunting issues... though the 70-200 VR is really fast in focusing. based from the reviews and personal experience - they have the same sharpness, contrast and color.... the main difference would the VR and the (lack of) noise when focusing.

im pretty happy with it (super sharp even wide open man! :) )

if you have the dough get the VR.. if not AFD version is NOT a bad deal.

@ carlo

with your current setup you're better off with the VR version... or better yet 200 f/2:Grin:

Yup, and 7 out of those 12 photos are taken without using my SB-600, specifically for some paparazzi shots like that of the "Cross-eyed" and "Moda".The VR really works well but I still have to utilize the techniques I used to stabilize my camera before I got this VR lens. We really cannot rely solely on the VR to get sharp photos. I also make adjustments on the ISO as needed. But overall I am too happy with the sharpness and fast-focusing I get from this lens. It was actually my first AF-S lens, and the silent focusing was a very pleasant surprise.
Thanks Carlo!
