View Full Version : Radio Slave Brands
arturo.fidelino 01-19-2008, 09:02 PM Have been to Aperture to purchase Flash Wave Radio Slave for my Sigma EF-500 DGST flash. However, when I have it tested, it won't work. It's not compatible with my third-party flash. I have the following queries:
1. Do you have any other reliable radio slave brand which you can recommend and can be bought locally? My budget is around 5k-7k pesos. What's your experience with Flash Wave Radio Slave?
2. I was told that to have better lighting I should buy a second third-party flash like Sanpak, that is compatible with FW Radio Slave so that I can have better light in my shoot. Consequently, I will have two flash -- one that is attached to my cam, Canon 30D, and the other to the slave. Is this advice correct? If not, any thoughts? Thanks.
bernie_ledesma 01-19-2008, 09:49 PM Id suggest for the budget you get the generic Cactus type wireless trigger with two receivers,

you can get the Canon 430EX and a Sunpak 383. I suggest you use both flashes external and not mounted on the camera.
For more info, theres lots you can pick up in the forum, "Lighting". Good luck.
LeonardoColl 01-19-2008, 10:14 PM Best to bring your gear when testing triggers. I have the flashwave radio trigger. It works with my Canon speedlight, but it won't work with a cheap Panasonic flash. On the other hand, I also own an optical slave that works with the Panasonic but doesn't work with the Canon.
jay_alonzo 01-20-2008, 09:36 AM I got a set of radio trigger-receiver from Wilson of Avenue. He sells it for P4,500 and has four channels. It comes as hot shoe type which you can also plug into the studio strobe. Brand is Merlin. It works well with my FL-50 (Olympus speedlight) and other generic flash guns. One thing, it didn't work the EX speedlight of my friend. It kept on "flashing". I am not sure it will be a perfect fit with your Sigma. But you may want to check it out.

arturo.fidelino 01-22-2008, 01:10 PM Thanks Oliver. Where did you buy your radio trigger and how much?
arturo.fidelino 01-22-2008, 03:30 PM Oliver, what's the model of your Sigma? Went to Infomaxx and saw your radio slave but when I tested it with my Sigma EF 500 DGST, it won't burst:Mad: Then, we tried it with store's Canon 430EX, it worked. Tough luck! The cost is about P2,800.

As far as I know, the 500 DG ST cannot be triggered off camera. Somehow, the sync pin (the larger one) gets disabled when no connections to the other dedicated pins are made. The Metz 58 AF-1 was like that, too, with firmware v1 (but v2 fixed that).
Rogie Munoz 04-06-2008, 01:53 AM fellow shooters. how's the performance of the cactus v2? range? any misfire issues? thanks, planning to buy a radio trigger and im thinking of buying this instead of the steeply priced flashwave or pw
Alvin Agustin 04-10-2008, 05:47 PM i ordered the 16channel cactus rf-16 from gadget infinity. these have recievers for studio strobes with the big headphone jack and a mini-jack adaptor included.
the rf-04 v2s and the rf-16 are incompatible accdg to their website.
last weekend, we used the cactus rf16 and flash wave and so far the've been reliable.
i've tested the 16ch flashwaves and falcon eyes 4ch rf recievers. the falcon eyes transmitter triggers the falcon wave reciever in ch2 only and vise versa.
you can also try using an external hot shoe mount and a hot sync cord attached to the sigma flash and see if it fires using the rf trnasmitters. they're available from frank
