Guys,

I just inherited my dad's Canon AE-1 camera, well it was passed down hehe

Any ideas on where the best place is to get it cleaned?

I was thinking around hidalgo i've asked around and there's this shop that'll do it for 1,500 but if parts are still needed additional payments would have to be made.

Any other comments regarding this model of camera?

thanks,
appreciate it

welcome to DPP! Hidalgo is your best bet for cheaper service of your AE-1. Their asking price of 1,500 is quite high though. Tawaran mo pa. For that price, you might as well call Columbia Photo at Megamall for an estimate (tel: 6334990.) They have expert technicians able to fix different camera brands with a modest 2-months repair warranty, I believe.

For background about this camera model, nothing beats this Malaysian site:

Hope you can have it restored. Good luck!

I had my A-1 CLA'd for 1,200. That included a battery compartment cleanup too cause of spilled acid. The terminal was also changed. I got it CLA'd at Unsmann in Hidalgo :)

Mike Santos did my AE-1 Program for P1k. Too bad he's gone ... :(

I'm trying out this place in Hidalgo called Image-3 Camera Service Station (besides Mini-Stop). They've done a good CLA on my Canon FTb for P850; noting of course that the FTb is fully mechanical and simply required cleaning, lubrication and adjustments...no circuit board that suffered any meltdown. I'm sending an A-1...want to wait for a feedback?

Anyway, the AE-1 is one of the first successful and reliable implementation of automatic exposure in its time. However, it has to be emphasized that it is now a 'dead' system because Canon abandoned the FD lens mount when they shifted to AF with the EF lenses. So lenses that fit the AE-1 and its contemporaries would not work with the new Canon DSLRs (and vice versa). There are adapters though but they are costly often more expensive the FD lenses.

On the plus side, because it is a dead system, you can easily find good lenses for your Canon AE-1 cheap! I just got a used FD 50/1.4 for under $20 in Ebay.

A-1/AE-1 parts should still be pretty common, I think most repair shops can do a good job at it... I'm thinking of getting one as well hehe.

Hmmm... sounds like there are still many users of this revolutionary camera. Maybe its time to have mine cleaned as well. :D not sure if mine is A-1 or AE-1 though.

Then we'll start a separate thread... we'll beat the LOMO.... hehehe!!! what do you think guys? :D

Then we'll start a separate thread... we'll beat the LOMO.... hehehe!!! what do you think guys? :D

Real photographers use REAL cameras

Before the AE-1 is sent out, does it REALLY need to be cleaned in the first place? If it's just surface dirt and the optics/mirror/lens looks clean, they a thorough scrubbing might suffice. I've seen a few dusty cameras which have pristine insides.

Note that when the camera is sent out for servicing, it is taken apart to some degree. Each time this is done, there is a possibility that the original calibrations will be lost and the camera is quite no longer the same.

Cesar in Moy's Hidalgo (betwen Island and Columbia) does great work on these cameras.

Any idea where to get a replacement battery compartment door here? I just got my AE-1 back from a friend who "borrowed" it for several years. It's still clean but the battery door is broken. :(

Saw a couple in eBay a while back, but I do have 2 Canon A-1s for parts sitting in my camera morgue...both has cracked up doors but one still has its locking mechanism intact--it still manages to lock itself (the other has the door but no lock). PM me if you're interested in cannibalizing it.

hi, like the other 2 guys here, my dad just gave me a camera and when he handed it over it was a canon AE-1. I was surprised since he mentioned that it was konika hehe. Anyway, he said something about a shutter failure so might just take it to the camera repair / from recommendations i read in this thread.

whew, i just downloaded the manual but I'm not sure if its just the battery or there is really something wrong with this cam. Do the guys at Hidalgo or at Columbia (Megamall) charge their basic check-up? I'm really excited to get this cam up and running. By the way, I'm just a noob in terms of photography  and will appreciate all the tips I can get.

Just got back from Hidalgo. Thanks to Jay for the information on Moy's cam repair shop and I have my magnetic shutter repaired for less than an hour. I scouted the area looking for a flash but unluckily the last one was sold an hour earlier . Anyway, I saw a telephoto lens that would fit the AE-1 and the store sells it for 7,500. He said its a 500mm telephoto lens.

Great thread. I also have an AE-1. It takes very good pictures. I can use it better now after I have learned the basics using my 400D. I'm bothered by the cracked viewfinder though. I might have it replaced at Hidaldgo too. Thanks. I suppose I'll use it more for black and white photos.

Semi-OT: I have two inoperable Canon Motor Drive MA that goes with the A-1 and AE-1 Program (I have the latter camera). I want to test the battery packs if they still work (thinking of finding/buying a used drive only); anyone here with a functioning unit I could meet up with just to see if it works. Send me a PM if you're up to it.

At last I had my test roll processed. I would just like to ask if you guys had encountered a similar problem. The first 10-12 frames were clear (no images formed) then the line mark was on every negative except for the last 5 frames. The lab where my negative was scanned said it was due to the camera. I used a Fujicolor100 for this test roll.http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/elbarax/000024.jpg

Aside from my 400D, I too have a Canon AE-1. It's a great camera! I used it for my photography class this year with a 50mm f/1.8 and the pictures came out pretty nice. I got it from my cousin who graduated about 4 years ago, and he used it when he was in college, too

I haven't changed the battery since I got it, so here's my question - how long does the battery for an AE-1 normally last? My camera has been with me for nearly 2 years now. I have classmates who have the same camera and got them just last year for our photography class this sophomore year, and their batteries kind of ran out within the school year.

Either you have a sticky shutter or the metering is faulty, my guess would be the shuuter is not working properly, maybe you just need to have it CLA'd in Hidalgo.

on an ae-1p i read it usually lasts about a year if you take it out when not used within a range of 3 weeks. and make sure that its set to lock mode.

for the av-1, well i unearthed this october 2007 and god knows when the battery was replaced (maybe i dunno 3-5 years ago?) it was still working until i replaced the batters just this march :)

Check your negatives, it could be a scratch from some loose dirt where the film travels inside your camera (which may explain why it does not appear throughout the roll). But it could also have been inflicted by the lab processing your film (because scratches should appear as white lines).

I would just like to share some differences between then AE-1 and the AE-1P. The AE-1P already has the LED meter on the viewfinder whilst the AE-1 still uses the meter needle (plus ae-1 was made earlier than the ae-1p 70s vs 80s I think). I used to think that all AE-1s were the same so when I finally got my "AE-1"...it was actually an AE-1P(rogram), the upgraded version of the AE-1... (and I was very alarmed while reading the AE-1 manual because it really looks different ...) oh well, at least now I know :)

Like miss Donna, I learned only recently that there were two kinds of AE-1 in the world! A classmate of mine bought one a few months ago and told me we had the same camera, and when we met up with a few other friends, I realized hers was different when I borrowed it. Hers was the AE-1P, and I had the AE-1. I tried using it, but I found myself more comfortable with my AE-1. (:

And since the latest posts have pictures of their cameras, I'm posting a photo of my baby as well. ^^

I have a black Canon AE-1 .. w/ FL 50mm 1.4 and a Focal M500T-Zoom Thyristor Flash
that has served me for several years already since college days...

I also got my AE-1 from my dad.. it's the camera that got me into photography..

I learned how to use it from him while I was younger... eventually I got hooked into using it at a young age.. I frequently borrow it from him while I was in HS that he finally just gave it to me when I really got serious in photography while in college

I do still like to bring it w/ me even if I have my 400D

although it is a bit in bad shape now, I am having it fixed soon..

The AE-1 was the beginning of the A series in 1977 while the AE-1P was the last in the mid-1980s. The AE-1 pioneered all electronic chip managed photography (so it does not run without batteries). It was unique that it had Tv mode (automatic aperture) while everyone else jumping into the automatic exposure band wagon emphasized Av mode (automatic shutter speed).

In between, came the AV-1 (Av mode), AL-1 (focus assist), the AT-1 (match needle manual metering) and the ultimate A series; the A-1 which featured Av, Tv, Program and Manual. Soon after, Canon released the AE-1 Program which was basically the AE-1 with the program mode included.

I got my AE-1 in 1977 for my high school graduation gift, shot my first wedding in 1978 with it and it took me through college. My brother got an A-1 for his graduation in 1980 (in between we had cousins who sorta followed our steps and got AV-1s). I used and loved my AE-1 to death (literally) up to 1985; I shifted to Pentax since.

Recently, feeling senti (mid-life ek), I got myself an AE-1P ...

Hidalgo/Quiapo is the only place to go actually. I think I mentioned in the first page of this thread where I have my stuff fixed but I should mention it again since they changed the name of the shop. Used to be I3CSS, it is now known as Luminance--besides Mini-Stop across Greenwich (the end of Hidalgo closer to the church). Look for Bong Alicos...tell him Bong 'd Pentaxian sent you.

Your AE-1s fried electronics sound like a bad prognosis...it's like the motherboard of your computer dying; be prepared for the worse...it doesn't sound good. Parts are dependent on a donor transplant...i.e., a dead (hopefully for a different reason) AE-1 would be your source of parts. It might be simpler if you found yourself a better working used AE-1...

Wow, classic cameras! I used the A-1 for a long time. Has everything a photographer needs. But it became backup when I got the super hi-tech T-90. I've played with the AE-1, AE-1P and AV-1, too, borrowed ones. But my first ever owned camera was the AL-1, which I bought for P3,500 with a 50/1.8, then chanced upon a 28mm/2.8 for P1,500.

When I was using the A-1 and T-90, Gilbert Cruz in Sta. Mesa was my repair guru. AFAIK, he used to work for SuperEast, which had the only Canon service center back then.

None...well Canon EOS DSLRs have an adapter, last I looked they were expensive and they actually work like teleconverters because they have their own set of optics to allow the FD lenses to focus to infinity with the EF mount.

Btw, if you do go hunting for a new body, there are alternatives floating in Hidalgo as well besides an AE-1. Someone mentioned an A-1 somewhere, I remember seeing an FTb recently as well as an AE-1 Program. So you have more options to keep your eyes peeled for...

Good luck!

15K is absurd.... Unless it's packaged with a bunch of really good lenses.

I also have a very clean Canon EOS 1N. Used to be Canon's top of the line SLR before the 1V. I am selling it for $325 shipped. Will also include Two (2) Fresh Rolls of Kodachrome 64. Let me know. :-)

wow.. i guess canon really started a revolution.. ang dami nyo naka A-1/AE-1!... when i was looking for my first slr... AE-1/A-1 were the first cams i saw, and planned to buy. thanks to sir daniel for the links.. but unfortunately, it didnt push through.. opted for the Nikon FM2n instead.. hehe..

such tons of Canon AE-1/A-1 in hidalgo last saturday.. a bunch of FD mount lenses too.. Nikon MF lenses are hard to find, expensive, and in demand, so the prices went up recently.. now im wishing i shoudve bought the Canon AE-1/A-1.. hahaha..

I started with a Canon AE-1 P, managed to build up my lens arsenal to a 50mm, 28mm and a Vivitar 28-200 plus two sunpak flash units, Cokin filters, 2x multiplier. I thought of selling it when I bought my 30D but considering the prevailing price, I think I would be better off building a glass cabinet and displaying the items instead.

I still think of shooting film sometimes, I just couldn't bear paying 100+ pesos for 38-39 shots that I could not get to see at once.

thats the thrill of shooting with film man...

for me its not about the instant gratification.. its about grain, its about the shots you take.. it makes you a better photographer, you think about the shot more before taking it, because you only have one shot. (unless you take a couple of shots of one subject in different perspectives).. its about thinking first before shooting, not the other way around.. well, i guess you know that already, you came from film e.. :)

using a dslrs has its advantages, we all know that.. but as film users say, it feels more human...

Used to have an AE-1 too. It went everywhere with me from snow covered mountains to tropical beaches and never let me down. I'm sorry I got rid of it.

So true, I kind of miss the feeling of waiting for the contact prints to get done, then selecting which pic to blow up by using a magnifying lens :).

I use to hang out at Well's Photo in Pasay before, talking shop with Manny Ang while waiting for my prints. Too bad he's gone now, don't know of any other shop who could give the same service he did.

can you guys recommend places where i can buy fd lenses for my A-1?

i'm particularly looking for wide angle lenses. 28mm or 24mm

a cousin of mine found an A-1 in their attic while they were spring cleaning. he gave it to me and it works!! now i would like to try wide angles lenses on it :D

Just got an A-1 with a 50mm 1:1.4 lens, just looking through the viewfinder is a nice experience. Can't wait to get the rolls developed! :]

@alainrafer, you can improvise with 4 LR44 batteries (pad it with aluminum para magkasya sa battery compartment), hehe, natutunan ko lang sa isang technician sa quiapo. :]

Since you want to have it cleaned, might as well have it calibrated. Had an AE1 for a very loooong time, and over time, the shutter speed becomes inacurrate (the technician said it has something to do with the horizontal shutter curtain, unlike in the A-1 that goes vertical). Anyways you have a very capable camera there, lucky you.

@patambrosio: found an expired one from an old photo store in LP, opened it up and replaced the 4 Lr44's inside it! Will share it here soon! Thanks sir! XD

@litogozum: Left to Mayers?! Will look for that store when I go there within this week! Thanks for the info sir!
