View Full Version : Panning
tj_parpan 09-13-2006, 05:29 PM This was a technique that was frustrating for me to learn, but once mastered was very rewarding.
It was discussed in length in PhilMUG (http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=3373), and you can check out the thread for reference.
ephotozine (http://www.ephotozine.com/techniques/index.cfm?subject=9) also had good tips for panning and motorsports photography.
I finally got the hang of it last November

Things that really helped:
1. getting the shutter speed right (thanks to Al Neri at the BRC!)
2. smooth tracking the entire motion of the subject and follow through after shutter release
I'd love to try this for triathlons or other sports. Great for wildlife as well!
Ria Vallesteros 09-13-2006, 05:41 PM that's amazing. bike lang ang subject ko nahihirapan pa ako sa panning! but then again, i was using a P&S. baka with the DSLR and its fast shutter speed, my panning technique will be improved.
imagine how good those guys covering F1 should be!

I'm assuming the shutter lag of a P&S might not make panning shots viable, though I've never tried using one for that purpose. But yes, a DLSR is the way to go for panning shots!

hi ria!
as far as i know, the problem with using a P&S is not really the shutter speed per se. rather, it is the shutter lag, and focus tracking ability. it's do-able, but it'll take a lot of patience and practice.
also, if i may add, you generally don't want a fast shutter speed w/ panning because the idea is that you'll move your camera (keeping it focused on the subject) while panning your camera (left to right, up down, whichever).
having a fast shutter speed will freeze the subject, but unfortunately, also the background.
look at tito TJ parpan's work. you'll notice that the background is generally blurred but the subject is sharp. notice also the wheels and how they are also blurred.
reynald.ngo 09-13-2006, 06:36 PM TJ,
Great AFC shots! True, doing this with a point and shoot is very hard... because of shutter lag. You should be very familiar with your camera to achieve this...

al_neri 09-14-2006, 08:39 AM Ok naman siya, Er ha!
The blur amount actually relies heavily on the speed of your subject and your shutter speed. The faster the subject, the more blur you get. But then again, even if your subject is zooming and yet your shutter speed is fast too, you wouldn't get the panning effect. Some subjects are slow and you would really need a very slow shutter speed to get the 'sharp subject, blurred background' effect. Sometimes, the shutter speed gets too slow for you to get a decent usable shot.
Even the distance between you and the subject is a factor in panning shots. Given the same camera settings, if your subject is too slow, try and get closer to add some speed to your subject. If your subject is too fast, try to put more distance between you and your subject to slow it down a bit. Eka nga ng Pop Cola commercial, dapat "Tama ang timpla!"
To the gurus, please correct me if I am wrong, or probably add more tips for our reference.

True, true. At the BRC last November, shooting the cars and bikes by the track were like, Whoa! Ambilis nila! Shooting from the stands and increasing the distance between the subject significantly "slowed them down". Or, the increased distance allowed you to track them better. I'm sure a formula in physics explains this. Speed = Distance / Time? Basta! It works!
Erwin_Cabbab 09-14-2006, 08:56 AM realized that the pic I attached was too big! :) fixed it na :)
thanks al for the tips! I can't wait for AF3!

Hi Jen,
You need to be conscious of the direction of the movement of your subjects and the direction of your panning. With your attached pic, which particular player were you tracking?
Also, matching the right shutter speed and the speed of your panning to the subject allows the "clear subject - blurred bg" effect.

don't laugh ha, i was taking the picture of them as a whole, but turned out to be only the two on both sides lang ang malinaw. frustrating talaga pag moving ang subjects at low light.

Taking them as a whole might be a bit more challenging! But yes, the low light makes it even more so. Try zooming in and tracking just one player. :)

aly_yap 09-17-2006, 07:31 AM it's just that probably the shutter speed was too fast and that's why there's no sense of motion in the picture. Even the tires were frozen
Giovanni de la Cruz 09-17-2006, 08:03 AM it's just that probably the shutter speed was too fast and that's why there's no sense of motion in the picture. Even the tires were frozen
That's exactly why I wasn't quiet satisfied with my first try at panning. I wanted to get that sense of motion/speed like the blurred wheel spokes but when I tried a slower shutter speed, the wheel spokes were blurred but so was the rest of the bike  . So, I had to resort to a faster shutter speed. Need to practice it more.

Depends per subject and available light...
Ideally, you focus on a subject, lock-on, move with the subject's direction/flow and rapid fire away... Stopping down the lens abit, Increasing the ISO and having a high shutter speed helps... :D

Marco_Ingco 09-23-2006, 12:17 PM I have a question. I have a wedding to go to tomorrow morning (Saturday PM dyan sa Pinas) and since I am just a second photog I'd like to try some experimentations. I want to try to capture this image (http://www.anseldeilara.com/dwf/dinolara87.jpg) by Mr. Dino Lara that he posted in this (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=1015) thread. Was panning used here? And actually, I have a major question with regards to panning. Do you have to have your camera set to continuous (AF-C) focus? When do you press your shutter half way? The start of your panning or at the moment of capture?
Thanks in advance.
Marco
OT: I am using D70 and I tried using AF-C before and I felt that focus is very slow. A lot of times I get blurred shots. So what I just do is set the camera to AF-S and then I just press and press and press the shutter half-way til I get to the point that I want to shoot, e.g., during bridal procession.
(Teka, tama ba gamit ko ng "OT". Lagi ko nakikita na ginagamit yan eh pero di ko alam ang meaning eh... he he he... :Dum:)

Marco, by the looks of this image... It was not panned... As I see no motion blur in the subject's periphery... Correct me if I'm wrong here Dino. :)
Now about the AF-C... preferably this should be set...

marco,
i think you have to set your AF to continuous. correct me if i'm wrong but the idea behind 'panning' is that you should keep your focus on your subject before-during-after you press your shutter. in other words, you have to keep focus on subject during entire 'panning session'. dapat may follow through.
kaya naman ata w/ single-focus but i think it'll be a bit more difficult. i'll have to try it out first.
when do you press your shutter halfway? during the entire 'panning session' assuming you're shooting w/ continuous AF.
hth
Nono Felipe 09-23-2006, 09:27 PM I personally don't use servo focusing on panning shots. Just my preference; been a one-shot focus user since day one. I don't think it matters in the output whether you're on one-shot or servo/continuous. It matters when you actually lock focus on the subjet - some may find it easier to lock focus using servo/continous. But when you press that shutter button and start the 'panning session' you're actually using the focus lock you got at the moment that you pressed the shutter button. In simple terms, the difference between one-shot and servo/continous will matter when getting a focus lock on the subject but not during the duration your shutter is open.
Just my $0.02

agreed. sometimes, it's just a bit more difficult to lock focus on your subject at the right moment using af single than keeping focus all through out via af continuous then pressing the shutter at the right moment.
David Tong 09-25-2006, 12:51 PM First crack at this... relative slow moving subject hehe.

Yes, I had a lot of pictures with a tail, just the nose or maybe the top or bottom half only... etc, etc... yes, it was a tough time to catch them in action... about 1600 photos over the course of a weekend. 8 races each day, about 100 pictures each race, the shots-taken to keeper ration was really low.
Still trying to sort through all of them, Adobe Lightroom and Aperture are lifesavers.

David Tong 09-27-2006, 04:10 PM Crossing new territories siguro... how do you pan if you're moving as well? Thanks.
carlo_mendoza 09-27-2006, 04:44 PM Just tried the shot. Im a newbie and never got hte chance to try 'real' panning shots. hehe
Thanks :)
chuck_maceda 09-27-2006, 04:50 PM Crossing new territories siguro... how do you pan if you're moving as well? Thanks.
You don't. Assuming the vehicle you are in is going at the same speed as your subject, you just aim at the subject and experiment with the shutter speed..... I think.
David Tong 09-27-2006, 05:54 PM chuck: good point... another question... (hope I'm not violating the thread's purpose of sharing pics).
In bright light, you need to use a relatively slow shutter speed like 1/60 or lower right, that means you'll need to bump your aperture way up to avoid over exposure?
In really low light (like at night), is it possible to get a decent panning shot if the car/subject is travelling on a regularly lit street (street lights) since the available light is so low?
this was by best try the other night while waiting for an intersection clearance... The truck is about 8-10 feet away from my driver's window...

Is a flash needed for night panning?
Nono Felipe 09-27-2006, 06:30 PM You don't. Assuming the vehicle you are in is going at the same speed as your subject, you just aim at the subject and experiment with the shutter speed..... I think.
Yep correct. Assuming both you and your subject are moving at the same velocity. If you are not, then do some physics calculations to arrive at the speed at which you must pan and at which direction. Kidding. :)

Alden Arellano 09-27-2006, 07:31 PM @David,
In bright light, you need to use a relatively slow shutter speed like 1/60 or lower right, that means you'll need to bump your aperture way up to avoid over exposure?
---Yes, as high as the cam permits. But if still too bright a neutral density filter will help.
On really bright days, the slowest I've used is 1/160.
In really low light (like at night), is it possible to get a decent panning shot if the car/subject is travelling on a regularly lit street (street lights) since the available light is so low?
---You might just get jagged streaks from headlights, reflections, streetlights etc.
Is a flash needed for night panning?
---Flash will help. To get streaks trailing the car, use rear-curtain sync. The flash will illuminate the car's body after the cam has captured the streaks. To create laser beams from headlights, use front-curtain sync. However, these will still depend on how you pan in relation to the subject's movement. Hope this helps.

David Tong 10-02-2006, 04:27 PM I played around with my friend's D50 (with 18-200VR) for panning the other day, life isn't fair hehe...
It's so hard with a p&s cam yet with my first try at someone else's camera, first try on a DSLR (done it before with film), first try on that location, I got around 5 out of 7 shots in good panning motion... Not great, but it's there...
Technology really made things a lot easier these days... I'll try to post the pics when the D50 owner sends me the photos...

Slightly OT, a bunch of us are planning on setting up the cam on a motorized tripod and place it facing the shooter. That way we can track and pan movements from the front via remote control. Anybody know where we can scout for these locally?
We want to pan a shot something like this (pic has been PP'ed to create the blur effect but the cam was really placed in front). And, yes, the cam survived. :)

vicoyrisma 04-04-2007, 04:30 PM I don't think simulated panning shots using Photoshop are counted here. But, nice try! One of the giveaways is the guy in red standing near the white car.
Noli_Gabilo 04-05-2007, 08:12 PM By the way,I was just wondering if it would be possible to pan a walking turtle. Can this be done?
THANKS.
Hi Michael,
Greetings from Tawi-Tawi!
Yes, you can do that. Depending on the speed of the turtle you will have to correspondingly change your shutter speed to achieve the pan effect. Some turtles after laying their eggs rush to the sea and can achieve speeds of 10 kph or more. A one second shutter speed will be fine in that case. Walking at a normal pace can get you 6kph. You can check with a gps. If you have the time, we can go to Turtle Islands and practice panning with turtles.
For other wildlife traveling at a faster speed, you can use a higher shutter speeds. I took this white egret traveling at about 40kph after sunset with a shutter speed of 1/15sec, just enough to blur the flapping wings.

Winston Baltasar 05-08-2007, 10:23 PM When I was with Top Gear, I remember looking at one of the photography books on shooting cars. They actually have people pushing the cars sometimes and that slow speed is enough to get your panning blur. It makes it easier to get a sharp focus on the car with the background blurred.
