Canon selphy technology is the same technology made by imation's dye sub printer who now owned by KODAK. It was being used by prepress to make digital proof before inkjet digital proofing was introduced. I have some prints that is exposed to sunlight. If I remenber it right the picture is already 10years old and it looks like new until now. It is scratch proof, it uses a ribbon instead of an ink.

I'm not familiar with the cost of the media used by the Selphy.

But dye subs have a fixed cost compared to ink jets when it comes to printing.

It's pretty hard to compute a fixed cost for ink jet prints since you tend to run out of certain colors ahead of other colors.

Cheers!

At our local computer store, the 36-piece ink and paper cartridge sells for about P320.00. So that should cost around P9.00 per print. Which is not bad at all, I think.

Now, if only I knew about this printer's quality and build. Is the quality comparable with the photo labs'? Is the build quality okay? I plan to use it for events..high-output printing. Di kaya bibigay after a couple hundred prints?

Also, regarding the "layout" function, can we actually design our own layout and upload it on the Selphy?

@ Joel

I sort of remember the paper being a bit thick. The sample that I saw sort of felt like a postcard when I handled it.

I believe mas mahal ang Inkjet.

But, sa durability, dye-sublimation dapat sir...

In inkjet, the picture is only PRINTED on paper, like printing NORMAL text, while in dye-sublimation, the picture is HEATED so it really stays long on the paper, plus is has a thin plastic cover, so Spill-proof ang picture...

Is there a cheaper substitute for the paper used on the canon selphy? Ty

According to the Canon local brochure, the cost per 4R print is 8 pesos. Much has been said over the quality of dye sub - better than inkjet.

Yep, it has gotten cheaper. A box of KP108, with paper and ink for 108 prints is 865p, i.e. 8p per print. Don't go to Camerahaus in Glorieta 5 where they sell it for 895p. It's still 865p in Canon DZone in Glorieta 3 on the 3rd floor Digital Exchange area.

i love our 720 selphy. it's output is darker than usual, so we just compensate sa computer :D been through a lot of boxes of media already and only had a failure to print once (my fault, naipit ang papel). :D

same experience with you jon.. our 720 performed well so far. print is dark than usual but can be compensated. I have two printouts side by side (inkjet and dyesub) that has been under continuous fluorescent light and so far the 720 print hasn't faded unlike the other one.

@ sir winston, actually Camerahaus gave me a better price than Dzone. :D

EDIT: that's Camerahaus MOA btw

Cool! How much did Camerahaus sell it to you for? Are you talking about the price of the 720 printer of the KP108 box of paper and ink? Or maybe another model no?

I confirm also that the print is darker than what I see in my Spyder calibrated monitor. Jo Avila tells me to lower the brightness of my monitor so it matches the print.

KP108 :) got it at 10 pesos cheaper, ang laki ng tipid diba? haha, but it does count when you consider high volume purchases (when I was there, they had an order for 2 cartons of the stuff).

I do the opposite, I increase the brightness output of the printer (which I know is a no no) but color correct output isn't at the top of our priority list when using this printer :P

You misunderstood me.

You don't lower the luminance of your monitor to match the print.

You lower the luminance of your monitor because you had it set too bright. :D

[Of course, we're doing this to help assure us of a good screen to print match. :D]

@ Jon & Ryan

The prints from your Selphy units aren't too dark.

It's your computer monitors that are too bright.

Don't blame the Selphy printer if you haven't accurately calibrated and profiled your computer monitor on a regular basis. :D

Cheers!

in fairness to everyone that owns the 720, i've read in online comparisons and reviews that the output is indeed darker than expected or compared to other printers in its class. even when compared to my friend's 710 when we had a group activity and brought our selphys. yes even off-cam printouts.

the software will ask your final printing adjustment. just set your selphy brightness to highest...it will give you better result.

Tam, CP720 is already an old model. CP760 is the most recent model that's out in the market. Replacement ribbon and ink goes around for 865 above for 108 pcs.. there's also a 36 pc box..
