View Full Version : 2008 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix Alexis L. Lagura 01-06-2008, 01:58 AM Anyone going to Kuala Lumpur to watch F1 this coming March 21-23, 2008? This is holy week :) Patrick.Te Seng 01-06-2008, 09:01 AM Possibly. I was there last year and spent most of the time taking pics. I'd like to actually watch it instead of having my face glued to the back of a camera :D Hopefully it rains as they won't have traction control. :D:D:D On the other hand, the prospect of a Singaporean night race later this year appeals to me... and it's sometime September. I can only go to one, if ever (financials willing) :D Alexis L. Lagura 01-06-2008, 09:36 AM Hope to see you there Patrick :) (and in Singapore, if financials allow it, hehehe). It's best to shoot during Friday practice (am&pm) and Saturday qualifying. Dont shoot on Sunday to enjoy the race :Grin::Grin:, except if your fingers are itching, hehehe. Btw, night race (first-ever in F1) in Singapore will be on Sept. 26-28  Patrick.Te Seng 01-06-2008, 09:45 AM Haha last year, I arrived on a Friday, so only got to do my practice shoots on Sat with the Carrera Cup and F1 AM practice and Qualifying. I was at Turn 1 then (K1 Platinum) as that was one of the places where the cars were slowest. To me though, I'd sit at the pit straight (mall area) next time, to enjoy the race: watch the start, see them flying at full speed and then catch the podium activities. Or better yet, wangle myself into a Corp Hospitality suite :D Alexis L. Lagura 03-19-2008, 03:09 AM eb anyone? @patrick - are you going to watch...and shoot? Alexis L. Lagura 03-27-2008, 12:52 PM @otep - no reply from vince yet on your raikkonen cap :( @nino - only saw jean todt, michelle nowhere in sight :( hope we can shoot together in singapore this september...grandstand tickets now, i think, were already sold out but there are plans of adding grandstands to accomodate demands  good news for us late ticket buyers. felt bad for massa too, 1-2 sana ferrari. @cezar - thanks Nino Estrada 03-27-2008, 01:07 PM @nino - only saw jean todt, michelle nowhere in sight :( hope we can shoot together in singapore this september...grandstand tickets now, i think, were already sold out but there are plans of adding grandstands to accomodate demands  good news for us late ticket buyers. felt bad for massa too, 1-2 sana ferrari. oh yeah 'jean' haha yeah still wondering what michelle saw in him, heard it was a 'meet the parents' thing when they were in malaysia, oh well. two driver's error for massa, too bad for the guy, i hope they keep him, i'd hate to see the rumored alonso to ferrari going through. Although I hope things will also go well at Honda, rooting for a good season for them since they already have Ross heading the team. really? sold out already? wow and to think that race is still months away, september!. i do hope we both get to shoot that. im sure some DPPers from the middle east will be shooting at Bahrain, looking forward to their shots. Alexis L. Lagura 03-27-2008, 01:18 PM @nino - hahaha, maybe the guy's "mabait"...i hope ferrari wont trade massa for alonso...but i think its already in the offing since jean is not actively involved in the team now....yeah, honda is improving now unlike the past 2 season's dismal performance. but im rooting for bmw as my 2nd team:Grin::Grin::Grin: massa's garage for you: http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p308/alexis_279/IMG_8452.jpg Winston Baltasar 03-27-2008, 04:38 PM Nice shots, Alexis, but may I ask why you were shooting in high ISOs? I remember Sepang as being bloody bright and hot. Alexis L. Lagura 03-27-2008, 05:10 PM @winston - i need to use high ISOs for some photos (800 in my case) since i want to capture the car at 1/1000 shutter speed using the widest available aperture for my lens. i dont know any other way to get the right exposure but to use higher ISO  if you noticed, i used this setting in photos where im positioned at the back of the car. its very hard to capture the car in that vantage point at shutter speeds slower than 1/1000  Winston Baltasar 03-27-2008, 06:29 PM @winston - i need to use high ISOs for some photos (800 in my case) since i want to capture the car at 1/1000 shutter speed using the widest available aperture for my lens. i dont know any other way to get the right exposure but to use higher ISO  if you noticed, i used this setting in photos where im positioned at the back of the car. its very hard to capture the car in that vantage point at shutter speeds slower than 1/1000  I think you have to trust your focusing powers. :) I shot the F1 race in Sepang for Top Gear in 2005, when I was Managing Editor, using ASA 100 film. If I remember right, there were times when I was at f/8 and I went to manual focus. Alexis L. Were you that close to the barriers? It seems that you were right next to the track, even at 300mm. I got the walkaround tickets for the Singapore GP, maybe I'll see you guys there! Alexis L. Lagura 03-28-2008, 12:22 AM @randy - thanks...we were seated at the tower in sepang :D i freely moved around the south tower to take shots, mostly at the lowest row. from the lowest row, the barriers were just 3-4 meters away. hope to shoot with you in singapore  Francis Pacunayen 03-28-2008, 02:21 AM Great panning shots Sir Alexis! On the other hand, I do not to worry about getting one because I wouldn't be able to go there anyway. Not enough resources. :) vic_icasas 07-10-2008, 02:39 PM Am finally getting back into photography this year and thought I'd post some of my own shots from Malaysia. I doubt it'll be as easy to shoot in Singapore though (but I'll bring my gear just in case). Complete set is here (http://flickr.com/photos/piranha23/sets/72157604239895765/). I'm eyeing right now a 18-200mm VRII, would this be enough for the event? Any suggestion or alternatives? Any other accessories I need to bring? I've read in the Singapore GP website that any lens exceeding 200mm will be banned and tripods and even monopods aren't going to be allowed? Hey maybe we can see each other there!!! Gerard Lim 07-13-2008, 11:22 AM I shot at the Malaysian GP a few years ago using the 18-200mm (samples below). I was seated at the grandstand back then. If you have a good location and vantage point of the action in the track, you can get good shots. The cars just came off a slow turn so I shot them while accelerating (they are not at full-speed yet). As far as restrictions are concerned, its the 1st time I've heard of this. Last time, I was seated with a guy shooting with a Bigma with no problems from security personnel. I wouldn't be surprised with the new rules, after all its Singapore. :) http://farm1.static.flickr.com/195/449540473_92a92c4be0.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/203/449537462_49296dd38a.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/228/449548396_b7c40018d1.jpg randy_bautista 08-18-2008, 09:48 PM For the Singapore GP, it says on the map sent with the tickets that tripods wont be allowed. I wonder if monopods are ok? Also they're implementing a 300mm limit on lenses... Damn... Well 300mm + a 2x TC is technically a 300mm lens still... Hehe... randy_bautista 08-18-2008, 09:51 PM For those on walkabout tickets, maybe we can meet up there. Just pick a spot on the map they sent and set a time. Anyone have access to a DPP/Top Gear/C-Magazine press pass? |
