It seems like a lot of people are trying to achieve this effect but cant seem to get it right. Does anyone know the workflow?

I've been on forums where Dave Hill participates. Undoubtedly there is photoshop involved but the most critical element that he says is lighting. The photoshop part comes easy if you can nail down the lighting patterns.

I agree, like Dragan, Hill, (even Manny Librodo), the PP process may be relatively simple to replicate, but without the right image to begin with, it won't have the consistency and the same effect...

i definitely agree with all of you. Ive nailed the lighting. Just really cant seem to get that look...

pipo_domagas

it's a combination of fill light and high contrast...

true.. if you can't nail it in the first few steps.. you won't get the the result that easy..

Then you haven't really nailed the lighting. Dave Hill will shoot knowing what needs to be done in Photoshop afterwards. It's all part of the workflow.

Hi guys... I came across this tutorial using Adobe Lightroom...

http://limeliteimages.wordpress.com/2007/10/30/dave-hill-tutorial/

If it's far from Dave's work, at least you can use it to give your glam photos a hint of pin-up effect :Dum:

We've been able to get something by fake-HDR methods. Meaning making HDRs from a single file. A high radius unsharp mask and dodging and burning plus desaturating every now and then also gets the look.

Kelangan masipag ka sa layering and dodging and burning. It's actually like manually painting over the picture as if it was a canvass.

I don't have a fixed workflow pero palaging andun ang high radius unsharp mask plus smart sharpen then reduce noise then dodge and burning.

Hello Gahum!

Check RONNEL CUISON's Flickr (try to search "pixelpro"). Im not a big fan of Dave Hill but I wana learn his style. Ronnel showed me some of his works in his studio. He has been doing the Dave-Hill-effect even before he discovered Dave's site. That's why I called Dave's style as Ronnel-Cuison-effect! LOL! ! !

i tried using this and it worked a bit, not exactly the same but very close...but yeah as we all know, the lighting is important, i tried using this tutorial for shots that were well lit and it worked, the results were ok, minor adjustments here and there and viola, but it really depends on the photograph and the lighting. 100 iso is probably the safest to use to minimize unwanted noise. i'm no expert with this technique, but i hope it helps

my pathetic attempt on Dave Hill:

no dodging or burning here (since up to now, i still don't know how to do it properly, hehehe). mostly saturation, tone and contrast controls only. tell me what you think.

Did some additional adjustments in PS CS2, but it's mostly LightRoom that helped me get the look.

Nice, very technical/graphical representation of an image. But "too" manipulated for my taste. Will fit certain types of advertising art. Does not fit my limited definition of photography.

Lei Sarmiento

Me too, I don't consider it as photography. More on photo-manipulation for ads / marketing literature.

--

Anyway, I did this last night just to be able to write down my workflow (although it changes depending on my mood)

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff98/storycircle/Photo%20Ops/Maj%20and%20Leah/DSCN0103copy.jpg

1. Reduce noise

2. Reduce Noise (again)

3. Hue and Saturation > reduce red lightness to -20 to -30

4. Hue and Saturation > reduce lightness / saturation of yellow a bit just to desaturate it.

5. Unsharp mask with high radius of 90-100

6. Dodge highlights, Burn shadows.

7. Reduce Noise

8. Hue and Saturation > increase lightness of yellow to almost white.

9. Sponge tool to desaturate the obvious red areas and the yellow areas as well.

10. Increase contrast

11. Hue and Saturation > decrease saturation of master to your taste.

--

Hope somehow you get close results. ;) Lemme know if you have additional steps so we could try them out too.

Thanks for your advice pare. The original pic was edited to make it look soft when i used it to try the "Dave Hill" effect. I guess that's what's missing (or wrong). I knew medyo me kulang. Yes, most if not all Dave Hill photo's are sharp. Appreciate our advice. Thanks again!

Yes, sir. Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 lens. Dave Hill's most used lens is the 17-40 f/4 on a full-frame camera so the conversion should be about the same of a crop body.

Much appreciated, Jerico! Yup! I was thinking the same. If I had more light or if I had a few strobes, I would've raised the aperture a lot so the elements are all sharp :) Next time on controlled shoots will try it. Also, a super key element of Dave Hill's shoots is his ringflash! That's what I am aiming for hopefully end of this year :)

@paulo: great work! Can you tell us how it's done?
Actually, I just combined the Dave Hill tutorial (http://limeliteimages.wordpress.com/2007/10/30/dave-hill-tutorial/) found on page 1 of this thread and The Manny Librodo Sharpening Technique (http://digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=1085) to come up with that image.

So all in all:
Shot in RAW
Then in Lightroom:
recovery = 100
fill = 100
contrast = 100
clarity = 100
vibrance = 100
saturation = -75
adjust the black/exposure as you please
add a lens vignette
Then in Photoshop:
USM 18-40-0
USM 150-.3-0
Edit>Fade USM 100% in Darken Mode
USM 150-.3-0
Edit>Fade USM 50% in Lighten ModeSo none of it is my brainchild, really. I just experimented with the tips and techniques that the good people here have shared to come up with it.

The best part about the workflow is that you can tweak it a lot to satisfy your personal taste :) But I agree, considering all the steps that have been detailed, the most vital and important part of getting it right is that you have to shoot the right photo to begin with! :)

^ I just noticed though... I tried it with people/faces... it doesn't quite do the trick. the skin doesn't retain its tone. It becomes too dark.

Hi guys,When I do processing thru Lightroom, the file tends to be saved as .PSD. Also in photoshop, doing HDRs will have your photo be saved via .PSD, .PNG, TIF, etc..all are large formats. How do you post those pictures in the Web?I hope you can help me out here...thanks!

Note: I wonder what's wrong with this... I resized the images to 512 x 300 so as not to appear so large in here... but they still do... Grrrr.... :Angry:

I see a lot of people try to use and get the effect with Lucis. It's not the way to do it. Get a good image to start on...Good Lighting...and do PP.

I was actually, trying to figure out how lights should be used and placed for this type of images. I am guessing a strong light from the subject's back and two lights right in front (though, just a little slightly angled) of the main subject as basic set. Plus, more lights the better.

I've been on forums where Dave Hill participates. Undoubtedly there is photoshop involved but the most critical element that he says is lighting. The photoshop part comes easy if you can nail down the lighting patterns.

I think that is what a lot of people forget.

Screw the compostion, screw the lighting, screw the subject, screw the preparation - the DHE worklfow will miraculously save my snapshot.

It's a disservice to Dave Hill I tell you.

Right on, brother, speak the Gospel!

Definitely, I'm with you on this... The PP is only part of the process, not the meat of the whole dish...

just sharing the words from dave hill himself on dpchallenge.com

Hi guys,
Wow, I'm flattered by all this talk! I'm glad some of you like my work. I really can't share much about specifics, and I'm not a photoshop guru, but I am definitely down to discuss. I haven't used HDR or that tone-mapping stuff. I just recently heard about it, and it seems you need to bracket your images to do it well. That would be almost impossible when shooting humans! :-) In terms of cameras, depending on the budget, I use canon digitals and H1's; all prime lenses. Canons are SOOO fun and easy to shoot with, but the H1 files are crisp, edge to edge, and print bigger. Kinda a trade off. I'm a big fan of using lights, and I'd say the primary factor of how my images look is the lighting setup. Photoshop is of course crucial as well, but you gotta have a clean raw file to begin with. Too much processing can give you nasty digital grain, halos, all that stuff, which may look good on Flickr, but when printed on paper for a portfolio that an art director sees, looks like junk. I would totally suggest that new photogs spend less time on PS and more time shooting and playing with lights, and learning how to direct their subjects. As to the comment about $50k shoots... haha... that made me laugh. For sure my budgets have been getting bigger, but a lot of the stuff on my site paid peanuts. You really have to work your butt off; lots of sweat, set-building, hauling lights all over the place, day after day, for at least a few years etc. But that's part of the adventure, right!? Let me know if u guys have any more questions. Thanks!

Dave Hill
davehillphoto.com

hope that sheds some light on the matter..

cheers guys..

Why do still people feel like the Dave Hill effect will make their photos cooler even if they never used the Dave Hill lighting technique?

I think before newbies in photography even start discussing how the Dave Hill effect was achieved in PS, an education or research on Dave Hill lighting technique or actually other lighting techniques will benefit them more.

Dave Hill said it all....lighting, composition, set build up, directing, clean raw files, post processing. And by the way, specifics on how to do it were not included.

This separates the pros from hobbyist. Let the pros inspires us and give credits to what they have done. As for us hobbyist, just enjoy and keep shooting.

sir can i still do this on adobe raw converter? increase the fill the and lower down the blacks? then? shall i used higpass filter and play with the opacity? a bit difficult to pull it of only using flash gun to kill the ambient light
