View Full Version : Portrait using SB800 (CLS)
CocoyLopez 12-21-2007, 12:21 PM Hi,
Just want to share my new found "toy" using one SB800 on CLS. I just replaced the slave flash I bought from Aperture (an MF-45 lighting set) with this strobe, set it to REMOTE mode, pop the flash of the camera and fired away.
Camera setup:
Built-in flash = Manual, 1/8 (Commander Mode)
ISO = 100
WB = Auto
SB800:
Remote Mode
iTTL
Lens:
Sigma 50-150mm @ f/2.8 for all pictures
Lighting:

85mm @ 2.8

125mm @ 2.8

I'd say, not bad... not bad at all for simple lighting :)
JarodClemente 01-09-2008, 08:17 PM Yup, not bad for a single light. Place a reflector on the other side of the subject and you'll have more light (unless you intend the contrast thingy)
TFS!
CocoyLopez 01-09-2008, 08:32 PM Ronald,
Thanks for visiting and the comment. There was no time to look for a reflector as my nephew was already complaining :D
Jeruel B. Ibaņez 01-09-2008, 08:38 PM Wow! I am excited to try this one myself. Thanks a lot for sharing this very helpful tip or setup for newbies in CLS, like me. :)
Erick Belen 01-09-2008, 10:30 PM Nice one Cocoy. In fact the same setup was my very first light or first attempt in lighting using strobes. Mine is SB26 (an ebay purchased item that still serves a purpose) that I set in Slave mode and am using it together with my SB800 or SB28. I may have to buy a sync cord so I can use the three together. I believe your gears are nikon, if you're on a budget, I suggest to have a second hand of SB26 and a reflector (a 5-in-one that can be bought in Quiapo). This time I used to hang the SB26 for hairlight purpose. Use it often and you'll become more creative. And don't limit yourself with this gadget, unless you're shooting at night, consider utilizing the free light when you shoot daytime.

Thank you very much, Erick! I really appreciate the information you shared.
Yes, my gears are Nikon, and I'm on a budget this kind of expensive hobby so I might consider a cheap speedlight. Just a question on the SB26. Is this compatible if used in a CLS setup? Thanks!
Erick Belen 01-10-2008, 01:49 AM I haven't tried it yet, but considering that SB26 is an old flash perhaps it won't work. I haven't tried because I set (each flash in Manual mode) and meter each before shooting.
francisvidal 01-10-2008, 12:11 PM how much did you spend for the camera and the tripod & clamps? where can i buy those?

I heard that the price of the D80 is going down fast, but I'm not sure how much it is today.
For tripod, I spent around 7k+ (including the ballhead)
For the clamps, around 650 pesos from Aperture.

if im not mistaken. go to your SB800 menu.. and put it under SU mode. you can control it from there, i mean the power of the flash.
tembanaria 02-04-2008, 11:35 PM Hi guys, just to share. Got my D80 body from a grey seller at 34.5K early january 08. Also, got a strobist set from Aperture at 3.8k just last Saturday. Set includes tilt head, stand, spigot, shoot-through/reflector combi umbrella, lee filters, and a trigger-receiver set. I guess I dont really need the radio trigger-receiver set as the D80 is CLS but who knows I may have a need for it later. It was used in the portraiture eb at QC shooters last Sat.
:)

Hi, do you mean how can you trigger your SB800 using the commander mode of your D80? Did i get you correctly?
You can press and hold the center of the Navi button of your Sb800 and select the first box on the right , then you will see the selections. Just select Remote.

then on your camera, you can go to the menu for your flash setting then tick commander mode. then just set your on board flash to either TTL, manual or --.

Hi Nikki, you just need to go to your D80 menu under "Built in Flash" submenu which is underb Bracketing/Flash menu. Then choose commander mode. Then choose the settings (group and channel). Then press ok
As for your SB-800 (I assume you know already how to set it up as remote) make sure it's on the same group (A or B) and channel (1, 2, 3 or 4).
When all is set, pop up your on board flash of your D80 (as it will serve as the triggering unit) and click take photos.

CocoyLopez 02-11-2008, 10:45 PM how can I go to my menu?.. can I use it on my d80 without any wire to trigger the sb800?
The answer is YES.
There are two ways to trigger your SB800 off-cam:
1. Remote -- you must have set your camera's onboard flash to Commander mode to trigger the speedlight to fire. Through your camera, you can select the onboard to be in TTL, manual, or just a trigger (denotes by "--")
2. SU-4 -- under this setup, your speedlight acts as just a slave flash unit; meaning it will fire anytime it "sees" a flash of light coming from a strobe. Under this setup, you can control the power output. This is good for accent, hairlight, or a kicker.
Tard Santos 02-24-2008, 11:42 AM That's a good one ! have you tried putting a small tape or anything to diffuse the light in your built in flash yet ?

Actually, I carry a facial tissue in my bag that I attach to the buil-in flash to act as diffuser.

No wonder the pictures looks great ! Thanks for the reply sir.
CocoyLopez 02-25-2008, 08:41 AM @Tard,
For the images I posted, the on-cam flash was never diffused (no facial tissue :D) as I needed the light to trigger the speedlight. The on-cam intensity did not contribute much to get noticed; It fired just enough to trigger.
