Despite not so good lighting at the Blue Eagle Gym, you have managed to come up with good pics.

I tried shooting at f2.8 with ISO set at HI but the pictures have become grainy. Compared to the San Juan Arena, the lighting is poor during the games which are televised on TV but the lighting is worse during the non-televised games.

I think I'm suffering a little bit from volleyball fatigue after the Shakey's V-League. I think I'll pass for the moment when it comes to posting pictures.

Keep up the good work and keep posting Nolan.

@Dondi: Good to see you again sir! I agree the lighting is so bad in the Blue Eagle gym compared to the brightly lit Arena during the V-League. All my pics are dark. Next time I see you around, I'll ask you to adjust the settings of my D40x if you don't mind. Heck, I don't even know what aperture and shutter mean!!?

@Dondi - thanks! i agree that lighting at BEG is really bad. i am still thankful though since the first round last year was at UP CHK which had worse lighting conditions.

The first picture shows the UP and NU volleyball players in the traditional handshaking at the net while the second picture shows pretty Danielle Castaneda (#3 girl, on the left) the half sister of Aiko Melendez.

Lighting at the Blue Eagle Gym is not that good and you really have to do some adjustments with your camera. This game UP and NU was televised so there was slightly better lighting. As a challenge, try shooting during some of the non-televised games where the lighting is worse.

handshake: 1/60 @ f/4.5, ISO 1600, 60mm focal length
danielle and team mate: 1/30 @ f/4, ISO 1600, 44mm focal length

When I shoot fast-paced action (spikes, smashes and digs) I use a shutter speed of 1/320 to 1/500 with a constant aperture of f2.8 during televised games with ISO 1600 on my Nikon D40. Of course, no flash because it might distract the players.

The result is not that good but acceptable pictures. Almost always I needed to post-process adjusting the brightness, color and contrast with some cropping.

During the non-televised games, I find that I have to rack up the ISO to really HI (ex.3200) and the result is a lot of grainy pictures.

When I'm shooting the sideshows (players on the benches, fans in the stands, etc), you can use the flash. I use the flash sometimes to take pictures of the players on the court if there is a lull or break in the action.

Come to the Blue Eagle Gym this Sunday.

Aside from the UAAP volleyball games indoors, there are also UAAP football games held just a short distance away in the fields.

If your schedule permits, you can also go to the sandcourts of La Salle in Greenhills for a bit of NCAA beach volleyball (men's and women's).

Thanks again Dondi, will try your settings as well...I went there last week to mainly shoot the football games since UST was playing, I had a hard time though because the field was too large and my lens can't catch all those actions from afar (28-135mm)...I'll try to post my shots on the Football thread tonight.

I was surprised that there was a Volleyball game ongoing so I tried shooting there...by the way when is this beach volleyball at LSGH? Do I need some permit or something to shoot there?

with ISO 400 or 800, with a fast lens, you can get great shots. the lighting at the BEG is adequate, not like araneta but pretty decent already. the tendency with using high iso with these shots is that the photos will have noise.

I wish I'd already had my DSLR when I was still playing.... then again, don't think DSLRs were in use much then.... Great shots Andrew! My old coach actually used to say 'Practice makes permanent... ' so just keep shooting and soon enough it'll be like clockwork for you :)

actually andrew you already have a fast lens, the nifty fifty :D lacks the focal length though, but if you can get closer, that would be a great lens to shoot sports shots as well.

The ongoing NCAA beach volleyball games are held on weekends, mostly Sunday mornings. I'll try to post some of the schedules here for everyone.

I don't think you need a permit to shoot. Like me, I just walked right in and blended in.

When you took the picture of Charo Soriano and Vanna Lim (static subjects), why the high shutter speed compared to the lower shutter speeds of the action shots?

Thanks Dondi, with regards to your question, I used my nifty fifty for that shot...I wasn't able to switch to a lower ISO that time, plus they were using lights (I don't know how they call it though), my camera was in Manual mode that time and based on the meter from my cam it will be overexposed since I was keeping my shutter speed at 1/125-160 the whole time..that's why the high shutter speed instead :)

I'm not sure if I answered your question correctly but I hope I did!

1) Click on the "Post Reply" button at the bottom of the page or go immediately to the "Quick Reply" window.


2) Click on the "Insert Image" button, the yellow button with the mountain icon
A separate window will pop up with the prefix "http:// "


3. Copy then paste the URL of your image into the field provided

ex. http://images.....................................&nmid=80717363


4. Click the "Submit Reply" button. Your image will appear instantly on the page for everyone to see.


Some people find it bothersome having to click on the link leading to your picture. They want to see the pictures right away on the page.

Hello guys! I'm new here... And I just want to get back to photography once more.

Got no practice since 2001. Anyways. I'm interested in sports photography and I really like watching UAAP women's volleyball so I why not take pictures.

But I'm using an old Canon EOS 1000 QD... ummm yes its only a semi-digital camera that still uses film (this is embarassing). My lens is a 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.

Last Sunday I tried to use this camera during the Lasalle-FEU and UST-UE games.
I have the films convereted to digital copy at a local photo store. And the pictures came out terrible... dark, overexposed, grainy and blurred! At First I thought its the developers fault but I ask another photographer. He immedietly recognize the wrong things that I've done.

*camera's ISO was only in 125
*I'm using only ISO 200 films
*I'm at auto focus. Which is bad for taking action photos
*He suggested that I convert film to digital copies in a Fuji photo Store. Because they are good at it!

... Well in the future I'm planning on buying CANON EOS 5D or 40D. If my budget permits. For the meantime I really wanna try my Old School camera. So any suggestion and advice for me will be appreciated!

You don't have to be embarrassed about your gear. We have the same lens and the shots I posted here is by using the same lens. Many of us here started using film. I believe with the correct settings you'll be able to get those shots..why not try using an ASA 400 film? Lighting at the Blue Eagle Gym is not on your side there...:Thinking:

Well I just bought 400 ASA films. 800 and 1600 ASA are hard to find these days.

I'm an avid fan of UAAP women's volleyball (especially UST and Lasalle):Grin:. So I watch a lot since the beginning of this season. And I saw this will be a great oppurtunity to test and practice my photography skills.

Later I'll be in BEG watching taking photos of the UST- DLSU match.

Yup! 400 ASA films... 1600 ISO , 5.6 settings... 28-135mm lens

And the lighting is good at that time because the games were televised! And I don't like the angles. I was in one place the whole time. I was shy to go on the courtside. :Grin: Because there were no other photographers that I could follow hehehe!

But its not enough. The oldness of my camera cannot compensate the quality that newer digital cameras give.

Well I just bought 400 ASA films. 800 and 1600 ASA are hard to find these days.

I'm an avid fan of UAAP women's volleyball (especially UST and Lasalle):Grin:. So I watch a lot since the beginning of this season. And I saw this will be a great oppurtunity to test and practice my photography skills.

Later I'll be in BEG watching taking photos of the UST- DLSU match.

Umm can any photographer go to the courtside of the BEG even without permission??

Thanks RJ... Its really hard to take photos with an old school camera... But I'll adjust further my settings to see whats the best option for speedy-action shots.

But I tried to create an art form with those blurry and grainy shots..

Not to mention its more expensive to use film loaded camera... I spend most of the time more or less 1,200 pesos for the films and developing to digital copies... I HAVE TO BUY A NEW ONE! :Grin: And I just knew that film factories are shutting down all over the world... maybe 10 years from now films will be obselete or extinct :D

May laro ngayun sa the Arena, San Juan... Any of you guys going there to take some photos?

It's a playoff between FEU and Adamson in the women's division at 2pm. And I think there will be some games on the men's division later on.

Just wanted to share the shots I took last February 7. When I found out that my alma matter (U.P) will play my son's school (Ateneo), I knew I just had to be there. U.P prevailed!:)

Those who shoot in the Blue Eagle Gym knw that the lighting in that venue is not ideal. Nevertheless I still managed to shoot. The images are noisy but action packed and intense.

I think the the continuation of men's Semi Finals matches will be on Sunday with the women's Semis! But I don't know the exact time for their games

yes i believe so:) not sure though if they will restrict it since this is already the finals.

At first I thought that it is prohibited to shoot along the courtside! Pero maluwag din pala sila dun! The courtside in the Arena is not that huge so watch out for the players and the ball! :D :D

You just crouch and blend in! :D :D

Seeded fourth, the Ateneo Lady Eagles faced the powerhouse top-seeded Adamson Lady Falcons. Despite overwhelming odds, this gutsy, hard fighting lady gave it her best before her team bowed out in straight sets.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

I know this post is so much delayed and redundant but I felt it had to be made in order to rectify a mistake in the caption of the picture posted:

In an earlier post, I mistakenly put his name as "Steve Baltao".

Someone pointed it out to me that the guy in the picture is indeed STEFANO, not his older brother STEVE. Incidentally, I know both of the them.
