View Full Version : Lighting experiments
Melvin Vivas 09-11-2006, 02:04 PM I had nothing to do last Saturday night and I tried some lighting experiment for some things I have at home. Here are some...
By the way, the 350D is really not for sale. I just placed the caption for fun.

Pocholo Ignacio 09-11-2006, 02:47 PM Nice and clean Melvin. Care to share how you set it up? What did you use as background and how did you spread the light to keep an even white background? It would be great if you could describe your light set-up as well. Thanks for sharing.
jake_borres 09-11-2006, 03:26 PM @ melvin
I'm also interested how you maintained the clean backgrounds...btw, nice sets...
Melvin Vivas 09-11-2006, 03:52 PM The white background is just white cartolina. To make it very white, just make sure some light hits the background to achieve this effect.
I used 2 lights for this setup, my SB800 mounted in a tripod as main light and a Sunpak Ultra Lite to serve as fill light. The SB800 is positioned about 2 feet above the table where the subject is and about a half-feet in front of me. I'm shooting about 3 1/2 feet away(eye level) from the subject.
To prevent harsh shadows, get something to diffuse the light. Those round diffusers are pretty useful. With the round diffuser, the flash setting is 1/8. However, it really depends on the diffuser you will be using. It was really trial and error until I got the desired effect. The egg was easy because it was a relatively small subject.

Earl Gonzalez 09-11-2006, 05:31 PM Nice share Melvin! :) It's motivating...
Melvin Vivas 09-11-2006, 11:06 PM I forgot to tell you guys. I adjusted the white balance of the photos I posted earlier using levels. That's why they're that clean.
Here are some off the cam photos(no post-processing done). They're not as clean though. :

Here is the lighting setup I'm talking about. There's a slight modification in my previous description because I move the flash around and experiment in shooting angles. This is just to give you an idea what I'm talking about. No rocket science. hehe

Melvin Vivas 09-12-2006, 12:34 PM I'm glad you guys like it. Just play with the light. That's what photography is all about anyway. I hope you guys can share your experiences as well. :)
