View Full Version : Mc Gyver in photography? any useful self inventions you can share?
Rosscapili 09-11-2006, 09:55 AM Sino ang nanunuod sa inyo ng Mc Gyver nuong araw? taas ang kamay =)
Anyone out here who is a Mc Gyver in photography? any useful self inventions you can share?...
-i read somewhere that you can make your own infrared filters out of 4 x 5 unprocess film? ....
- also, you can attach your p&s in binoculars to shoot birds? how true?
- how do you do improvise stofen? like that of Gary Fong's? out of clorox plastic bottle?
- Do you really need to use expensive background? or you can improvise...
- Can you convert your van into a rolling photo studio?....
Pls share what's in your mind which can be useful to others, though visually akward:)
Earl Gonzalez 09-11-2006, 10:34 AM You can cross two polarizers to come up with an effective IR filter, Nice for Sony Cams with Nightshot mode...
In the other forum/thread... Sonny Thakur came up with the idea of making a IR filter out of a floppy disk... It works... :D
Edited post: ooops... It's not UV but IR...
Carlo R. Lopez 09-11-2006, 11:20 AM id like to hear about the diy gary forng lightsphere

Hi Jay,
For colored gels, (tulad mo ring kuripot hehe) i use colored cellophane which you can buy at National Book Stores, merong green, red, yellow, blue, orange...you can wrap it in your strobe (pero dont expose it too long on modeling lights, mabubutas sa init). Try to wrap it in your flash too...

Alden Arellano 09-11-2006, 04:09 PM Uy, I can relate. Kapanahunan ko si Mang Gyber.
Made the ff:
1. Underwater case (for a PS camera) from a food container.
2. Light tent for less than P150.00
3. Flash diffuser from a fastfood styro
A few others still in the production line :)
jp_moral 09-11-2006, 05:12 PM Check this out:

jake_borres 09-11-2006, 05:16 PM I think sonny did a great job with his improvised IR using floppy disks...CREATIVE!!!

Sonny Thakur 09-11-2006, 06:29 PM I found my dad's old speedlite. Converting it to a ringflash soon.

Sir, Ipopost ko sana iyung sample image. Pero heto ang message kapag nag-upload ako:
Exceeds forum quota by 1.51 MB
Gagawin ko pa sana ang step by step procedures kaya lang medyo matatagalan. Figure out ko rin muna kung paano mag-upload. Hehehe
jared odulio 09-12-2006, 05:06 PM I applied 3 layers of 3M Scotch tape over my built-in flash to serve as diffuser and it worked. :D
Marton_Benitez 09-12-2006, 05:25 PM Reverse macro? is that what you call it? I read it from a site before.
Took two lenses and placed it infront of my cam one attached and the other reversed and placed infront of the attached lens. It produces a macro image. :)
You get a pretty shallow DOF too.

Jeff Vergara 09-12-2006, 05:35 PM not really my diy but i tried using a cone-flash diffuser (http://www.nikkish.net/jeff/2006/05/booty-call.html)

ed_canuto 09-12-2006, 10:38 PM I saw one photographer used a 1 litter white plastic container used for storing chamicals for photo lab printing. He used it as a flash diffuser. Cut off the top part, glue a 1 inch thick foam around the inside of the rim (where upper part was cut off), this will hold the diffuser to the flash steady. Works like stofen, he even said that it even works better than a stofen. Cost: free, photo labs throw them away anyway.

paul_syjuco 09-13-2006, 11:05 AM i once bought those made in china collapsible clothes hampers in SM handyman. made of white nylon fabric. just cut out some parts to stick the camera into and it was an instant light tent for less than P100
Darryl Ong 01-06-2007, 06:03 AM hmmm now i'm having secong thoughts on buying a light tent:)
benjie_ordonez 01-06-2007, 08:27 AM When we were starting, a friend of mine cut the top half of a J&J baby milk bath and stuck it to his 430EX. Works just like the stofen. In fact, he calls it Sto-Fid.
Since I was using a 550EX, the J&J bottle would not fit my flash. So I took a bubble bath containter, cut just below the neck of the bottle. Stuck some styropor and some masking tape around the edge and viola! a macho version of the Sto-Fid.
carlo_mendoza 01-06-2007, 10:07 AM Used a Fuji filmcan as a diffuser for my pop-up flash :)
Glenn Francisco 01-06-2007, 12:31 PM im using a foamy material as a bounce card : http://abetterbouncecard.com/
ive aso tried the semi transparent cloro bottles as diffusers.
now im studying how to make the wire of my 20d's shutter release longer.

thanks for sharing. i have heard of the reverse lens technique before, but not the way you described it (with the use of two lenses). its something worth trying for sure :)
gezellerivera 08-12-2009, 07:18 PM not really my diy but i tried using a cone-flash diffuser (http://www.nikkish.net/jeff/2006/05/booty-call.html)
hhhmm... i dont think the link is valid anymore... plus, it says "booty-call.html"... weird.
allantrodriguez 08-12-2009, 07:25 PM i made a flash diffuser using a small illustration board and a clip for my SB400 speedlight.
Tracy Monsod 08-12-2009, 07:31 PM Made a flash diffuser for my built-in flash out of...a folded piece of onion skin paper and a hair tie. Haha! I sometimes use table napkins. As in tissue. LOL!
I also made myself a light tent, which works wonderfully!
Aaaaand I made myself a star bokeh-fyer hood thing for my 50mm! Wooooh~
jomi_garrucho 08-12-2009, 08:16 PM 1. car sunshade as a reflector
2. translucent plastic storage bin as a light box + cover serves as a soft light diffuser for speedlites + it can fit some of your stuff too.
just like this one, pero mine has a translucent cover too.

Got the Idea from him :)
Lei Sarmiento 08-12-2009, 09:24 PM Before I got the Lee flash gels, I DIY'ed gels from the colored translucent plastic folders.
Right: Lee flash gels. Left: DIY gels :D
And they're on top of the Lock n' Lock DIY drybox

David Tong 08-12-2009, 09:33 PM isn't it the other way around Lei?
PHIL ESPEJO 08-12-2009, 09:39 PM Airsoft Utility Vest... in the process of converting it to a photographer's utility vest that's capable of supporting two dSLRs with heavy lenses; extra lenses; utility pockets for external flash unit, extra batteries, diffusers, etc... I'm almost done with it.
Lei Sarmiento 08-12-2009, 09:41 PM haha sorry! The above should've read:
left: Lee flash gels. right: DIY gels
Sonny Thakur 08-12-2009, 11:23 PM paperclip = multi-tool
maandelupio 08-13-2009, 10:11 PM i used 2 halogen lights 150W (P100each) for my still life photos (no budget yet for strobes). its soo.. hot though
David Tong 08-13-2009, 10:17 PM Maan: Use CFLs next time. :)
maandelupio 08-13-2009, 10:30 PM sorry po, what's CFLs? thank you!
David Tong 08-13-2009, 10:38 PM compact fluorescent light
Tracy Monsod 08-13-2009, 10:39 PM sorry po, what's CFLs? thank you!
Compact Fluorescent Lamps. They're low-energy bulbs - they save energy by making use of tubes instead of one large round bulb. (: Even if they use up less energy, they still give off the same amount of light as other bulbs, and they usually last longer, too. :D And, less energy = less heat! : D

thanks! hope it's cheaper too! thanks thanks! maybe models can now stand long hours under CFLs than halogens hehe!
David Tong 08-13-2009, 10:52 PM Something like this:

They have that in TayHua as well (with the light stand).
richardromano 08-13-2009, 11:10 PM Kentucky Bucket White Plastic Cover :-)

oh i see. does it really comes with the reflectors (as corrected by sir david)
how much for over all set of CFLs with stand? what's the recommended Watts? thanks!
David Tong 08-13-2009, 11:35 PM black ones are called reflectors, no, the bulbs don't usually come with it unless you buy them as a kit. Search the prices in Tay Hua's website (just google it somewhere), higher wattage the better of course.
maandelupio 08-13-2009, 11:46 PM thanks sir. will research more about it. :-)
