hi! newbie question...

I want to print and hang some of the photos i've taken over the past months. What would be the best size for framing if i use the D40s .JPG/6MP/Normal Mode? Should i go for Matt / Glossy / Metallic finish? I'll have it printed at Digiprint.

Regarding framing...Would it be better if the photo had glass on top or just mount it on a border and hang? Most pictures are landmarks/cityscapes by the way. And lastly, any framing shop recommendations? Preferably in the south metro.

Thanks!

hey. for me, i'd go with matt. why? glossy would absorb all those icky thumbprints!! back in high school, we had frames for the photographs. no glass. i like it better without glass. just a frame from an illustration board. hehe. really easy to do. or buy?

You can also try mounting them. Its just mounted on a 1 inch thick wood and looks very nice. No glass so no glare (unless you use the expensive glass that has no glare)

Thanks for the suggestions Abu and Miguel. I'll probably get the mounting done and use matt finish for printing. :) any recommendations as to size of the photos or what's the max size i can print with 6MP? Thanks!

using 300dpi. and printing an 8r (8x10). it wouldnt be enough
8x10 using 300dpi would require 2400x3000 pixels. kulang. that's about 7.2mpixels eh.

you could crop to 5x7 na lang. that's 1500x1700 (300dpi). that's around 3+ mpixels.

*correct me if im wrong, anyone.

cheers!

I use a 6.1 megapixel camera and I've had photos printed bigger than 8R with no problems.

I'm not sure if I got the terminologies correct. What's important here is if you're shooting with a 6 megapixel camera, make sure that you save it using high/excellent quality settings (therefore a large file), and having it printed with a very good printer.

Just to share, Digiprints was able to print a realtively low quality image in 8R size (I accidentally save the image using best compression mode). Commendation to Miguel V.

If you're planning to have large prints, set your camera to best quality jpg, at least (not sure if it shows as L or fine in your LCD display).

I've got to try this, will ask my framer if they offer this service. NO matting, no glass just thick painted wood.

Normally i just have my pics framed with a two inch matting and woodern frames.
I've always wanted to try other types of framing like those with huge 5 inch matting on each side with thick bottom matting... but normally i chicken out and go conservative.

how about cold laminating the photos before hanging them? i like the matte/satin effect cold lamination produces..

Thanks for the replies.

@Jared

What do you mean by cold laminating? Is it the same as ID lamination? Sorry for the ignorance :)

it's like regular lamination but you don't heat it to laminate.. it's hard pressed through rollers with the laminating film. the film isn't like the regular laminating film; cold laminating film is somewhat satin/matte looking.. it resists fingerprints and prolongs the storage time of your photos plus you get that soft yet vibrant look to your photos(which i do like btw). most mitsubishi color printing shops offer this service. try to check it out if you have time..:)

Thanks for the replies.

I've printed in A4 and larger with my 6MP 10D, in my experience, 200+ dpi is sufficient for printing....

Digiprint calls it something, i forgot... they do have that lamination thing for their prints that Jared's explaining.

it's called phototac. i think digiprint gives it for free for any large print. its not actually a lamination, it's like a removable rubber coating on top of a regular matte/glossy/metallis print.
