View Full Version : is the canon 400d worth the upgrade
pat dy 09-10-2006, 02:41 AM guys, 2 weeks nalang the nw canon 400d will be launched na, i think it's worth the upgrade from the 300d and maybe the 350d also, im sure a few 350d users might disagree but given the resolution and improved high iso lower noise, it will be a good upgrade for any photog who loves to shoot at highiso levels,
anybody planning to buy or upgrade ?
Restie Mangune 09-10-2006, 03:54 AM from 300D I'd say definitely worth it but from 350D I don't know. It will be interesting to see a comparison between 400D and 20D ISO1600 images since 350D images were pretty close to 20D.
christopher cortez 09-10-2006, 01:07 PM its got better noise reduction capabilities? didnt know that one.....
Patrick Evangelista 09-10-2006, 02:59 PM I bought my 400D last Sept 6, I got it 3 days before it was launched.. This is my first DSLR so cant really compare it with the 300D or any other camera. The reason I chose this DSLR is because this is my first, if I had a 350D and if it was fairly new, I think I would just have invested in a good lens instead.
regarding low noise in High ISO, I would say its pretty good, considering im a rookie, I also tried going up to ISO 1600, and despite visible noise, its quite tolerable for my taste, again it might just be because Im a rookie. And besides, most of it can be manipulated in CS2.
Id say my 400D is a good buy.
enjoy_gaw 09-10-2006, 03:42 PM Has it been launched already? how much was it? Someone told me it's just about to be launched this week.
Anyway, Id like to get my hands on it before i decide. I heard the 400d has an improved grip. As long as it's not worse than the 350d id likely get it.
Now, i'd probably choose another camera like the 30d or higher if i'm using it 8 hours a day, everyday, and making a living out of it. Until then, i might as well get the best image quality for my money, in the limited amount of time i take photographs.
For all the great features in the 400d, improvements over 350d, and image quality for a price less than US$1k, it's an amazing value for money today.
dix perez 09-10-2006, 05:14 PM I think the review in Luminous landscape of the 400D is what we need. We don't need to see charts and graphs but actual photos and actual hands-on experience.
For the review:

I was really wanting to upgrade already since I've had my 350D for a year. I was looking at the 30D as the logical upgrade. I would use upgrade loosely since it is still 8 megapixels but in a better body. I was looking to go cross-over to the Nikon side with the intro of the 80D. I thought about it already and decided to switch to the D80. Fortunately, they intro'd the 400D with the 10 megapixel chip.
In all honesty, I would rather buy the 30D for the feature set, body and better robust feel. I was shooting the prince of Monaco in Payatas, he brought with him two foreign photo journalists with him, each of them had two 1Ds MKIIs with them. Another had a 30D and the local photo journalist had 2 Nikon bodies with him. We were shooting side-by-side, my 350D sounding like a toy beside the clacking of the multiple burts of everyone. It was there that I desided to get at least a "proper" camera. But I got over it. Malamang penile envy lang yun. In the end, I got the photos I needed. I guess, in the end, that is the important thing.
It would be a natural upgrade for 350D users especially if you have the vertical grip since it fits the 400D. It would save me from bringing 2 sets of chargers as well, since same batteries also. My main concern was the chip size. If it was the same chip size, but they increased the number of photosites to increase the megapixel count, that would be disadvantagious. I'd rather stick buy the 30D.
If you want to read more about this, check this out:

All-in-all, with the auto sensor cleaning feature and 10 megapixel sensor, I would consider this a better upgrade than the 30D. Especially with the megapixel crazy clientelle we have.
Sorry, napahaba!
pat dy 09-11-2006, 12:37 AM there's a few photogs testing it right now for the launch, feedback is it's pretty goodsobrang sulit for it's price... noise at 1600 very manageable, auto sensor clean, when u remove your eye from the viewfinder, the lcd screen automatically turns on and shows you the setting of your camera at that point, then when you look back into the viewfinder, its turns off automatically (cool),buffer is fast fast. better grip handling,, i think the launch is next next tuesday,
angelo_lopez 09-11-2006, 11:10 AM how much will it cost here?
newbie lang po ako and was all set to go with 350D then I read na lalabas na yung 400D so not sure if I'll go with 400D instead.
Thanks :)
Carlo R. Lopez 09-11-2006, 12:46 PM havent you guys noticed a lot of used 350d rebels being sold? guess this is in anticipation of the new 400d. would be interesting how this one would fare against the black knight d80
Patrick Evangelista 09-11-2006, 07:43 PM @ enjoy gaw, I bought my 400D here in sydney for AU$1500 (about P54K), twin lens + 1G CF Sandisk Ultra II... standard price was P1650 twin lens...but I used the Filipino way of "tawad":D ... and surprisingly the salesperson gave in. ..it was 3 days before the launch, I was surprised that particular store had it in stock already....
As what Dix Perez posted, I also read the review from Luminous-landscape.... and it was my deciding factor over the Sony Alpha...
Im pretty much happy with my choice, considering Im a noob in SLRs, Ill just save up on good lens
ro_deleon 09-11-2006, 08:46 PM Here's another review of the 400D:

From what's written, the camera seems like a great buy! :)
Paul Olegario 09-11-2006, 11:57 PM Played with it last Sunday. The LCD is very nice. Large and bright and turns off automatically when you bring the viewfinder to your eyes. It also makes the settings easier to read compared to the small settings LCD on the 350D. Operation felt snappier than the 350D.
Image preview was slower than the 350D (I used the Lexar 80x 1GB on my 350D to take sample pics). File sizes are larger (of course!). Forgot to play around with the Picture Styles (didn't think it was that significant because I can also use Picture Styles with my 350D through DPP).
For a 350D user, I think the only improvements are the LCD, dust reduction system and in-camera Picture Styles (if you're into that). I don't need 10 megapixels so the increase in megapixel count is not a plus for me (bigger files = larger hard disk requirement and longer processing time).
Took sample pics to test noise but too lazy to upload. Maybe later.
pat dy 09-12-2006, 02:29 AM guys the launch daw tent is sept 19 tuesday, ill keep you guys posted,,
Glenn Francisco 09-12-2006, 09:27 AM to answer the original question..it depends.
if you are coming from 300d...or d50..or whatever camera that is 2 or more generations older..then i believe YES it is worth the upgrade (based on papers)
but from a 350d or d70s...or any other camera that is 1 generation/model older....i dont think so...
my .02 cents...
mayk_cruz 09-16-2006, 02:52 PM Hi all,
I own a PS-A80 and is really eager to get my 1st DSLR, I'am choosing between EOS30D and EOS400D. I love to take night-shots(bulb-mode) and portraits... w/c camera would you suggest for a beginner(enthusiats) like me... ?
Should I get the body only and get a better lens IS/USM ?
