Out of Africa: Fine Art Photographs by Migs Zubiri @ OWG

It all began with an inner zeal and a 35-mm SLR camera.

Congressman Juan Miguel “Migs” Zubiri, Representative of the third district of Bukidnon, has never made secret his love for the great outdoors and his staunch environmental advocacies. Now, for the first time, he shares with us his newly rekindled passion for taking outdoor photographs and wildlife scenery, through his first solo exhibition entitled Out of Africa, on view at OWG from September 22 to 26, for the benefit of the Bukidnon Deer Park and Wildlife Center.

Sometime in the early 90’s, with digital technology still light-years away, Migs began taking photographs. Armed only with a 35-mm AVI series SLR camera and a lot of determination, a newfound obsession was born: a hobby that proved to be a perfect match to his love for the environment.

For this his first solo exhibit, Migs, Vice-Chair of the Natural Resources Committee in Congress, presents a whole range of pictures taken recently in Zambia and Botswana in Africa that would not be out of place in a National Geographic issue.

All of the 25 framed Fine Art Photographs—signed and dated by Migs Zubiri—were printed using archival printing technologies that are made to last for a hundred years.

“Seeing all these animals in the wild makes you feel small in the scope of things. It’s a very humbling experience that makes you appreciate nature and God’s creations”.

In taking outdoor pictures, Migs says, the anticipation of waiting for the proper moment to click away instantly adds to the thrill.

“Just waiting for that wonderful moment, that one instant, is truly exciting,” he explains, ”The photo of that cheetah nesting on tree is a perfect example. It happened in only a split-second, so I grabbed the opportunity. When it saw us coming, it darted away.”

And to his mind, the medium that is photography has a power, a potency, which can and must be harnessed.

“Looking at photographs can be a very moving experience. With a single image, you can express a thousand words and thus, change perceptions or even lives”.

It is therefore not a surprise that Migs takes photographs—an extension of his artistic side—to share with others, and that he mounts this show to serve a higher purpose: to raise funds for the protection of wildlife that is endemic to Bukidnon and Northern Mindanao in general, via the Bukidnon Deer Park and Wildlife Center.

The center, sitting on a 4.5-hectare property, was designed to replicate the natural environment where animals thrive and is envisioned to be a safe haven for animals that are in danger.

“This is how I do my part in preserving ecology. By way of my art, I get to capture the beauty of nature and it’s majesty. In the process, I get to inculcate the value of maintaining ecological balance”.
